To enter DMZ Early Access, prepurchase a digital edition of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on the platform where you will play. The Digital Standard Edition and Vault Edition qualify; a physical PS5 or Xbox Series X copy is not documented as providing the early-access entitlement. After the game is installed, DMZ appears in the Modern Warfare 4/Call of Duty game hub when the entitlement unlocks.
This guide explains the dates, supported systems, account and PC-security requirements, exact download paths, the difference between the 2026 DMZ and the older Modern Warfare II Beta, and what to do when the mode does not appear.

DMZ Early Access dates and eligibility
Activision lists DMZ Early Access for Tuesday, October 20, 2026 (Pacific Time). The worldwide launch of Modern Warfare 4 is listed for October 23, 2026. Activision cautions that actual unlock times can move because of time zones, outages, maintenance or other changes, so do not rely on an unannounced local-hour conversion.
| Purchase or edition | DMZ Early Access status | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Digital Standard Edition | Eligible | Prepurchase it through the platform account you will use to play. |
| Digital Vault Edition | Eligible | Includes the digital preorder benefits and Vault content; the early-access entitlement still belongs to the purchasing platform account. |
| Physical PS5 edition | Not established | Activision lists the physical product separately and does not state that it grants the October 20 access. |
| Physical Xbox Series X edition | Not established | Choose a digital edition if entering DMZ before the full launch is important. |
| Purchase on a different platform from the one you will use | Not automatically transferable | The entitlement is tied to the platform on which the digital purchase was made. |
In practical terms, someone planning to play on PS5 should purchase the digital PS5 version through that PlayStation account. A person planning to use Steam or Battle.net should purchase through that ecosystem instead. Xbox purchases may cover both console and Xbox PC access when the product is marked as an Xbox Play Anywhere purchase and the account meets Microsoft’s and Activision’s requirements.

Supported platforms
The official store groups the release under Windows, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo. The platform-specific announcement identifies the following destinations for the new DMZ experience:
- Xbox Series X|S
- Xbox on PC
- Xbox cloud gaming where the title and service are available
- Windows PC through Battle.net
- Windows PC through Steam
- PlayStation 5
- Nintendo Switch 2
Availability can vary by region, storefront, service and launch status. A platform appearing in the general product listing does not guarantee that every edition, cloud configuration or local storefront has identical timing. Check the product page in the account you intend to use before paying, and make sure the edition is labeled digital if you need Early Access.
Which edition and purchase route should you use?
Choose the platform first
Digital entitlements are safest when the purchase, download and first launch all use the same platform account. Decide whether you will play on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Steam, Battle.net or Nintendo Switch 2 before completing the transaction. If you later move to another ecosystem, do not assume the preorder benefit follows you; the documented benefit is attached to the original platform purchase.

Both digital editions qualify for DMZ Early Access. The Vault Edition is relevant only if you also want its additional edition content. It does not create a separate DMZ date. Select Standard when early access is the only extra you need; select Vault when its listed bonuses justify the additional cost in your region.

Why a physical copy is a poor choice for early access
Physical PS5 and Xbox Series X editions are listed separately from the digital editions. Activision does not say that those discs or codes receive the October 20 entitlement. No current official statement confirms that benefit; that does not mean that a particular retailer can never run a separate promotion. If access before the worldwide launch matters, use a digital Standard or Vault Edition rather than relying on a physical listing.
How to join DMZ Early Access
- Pick the playing platform. Confirm the exact ecosystem first: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Steam, Battle.net or Nintendo Switch 2. For Xbox Play Anywhere products, verify that the listing explicitly supports the console-and-PC entitlement.
- Buy a qualifying digital edition. In the platform store, select the digital Standard or Vault Edition of Modern Warfare 4 and complete the preorder or prepurchase. Keep the receipt and order status in the same account that will download the game.
- Prepare your Activision account. Sign in to an existing Activision account or create one, then link the platform account. The game requires an Activision account and an internet connection. Activision also says a mobile phone number may be required, so complete that verification before launch day rather than waiting for the mode to unlock.
- Check account standing. A permanently banned Activision or Battle.net account may be unable to purchase or play online. Resolve account-access issues before attempting another purchase; buying the game on a second account will not restore a banned account’s online eligibility.
- Install the game hub. Download Modern Warfare 4, or the Call of Duty application used by your platform, as soon as the store exposes the preload. DMZ is launched from that installed experience rather than from the older Modern Warfare II DMZ package.
- Meet the PC security checks if applicable. On PC, enable TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot in the system firmware and Windows configuration before launch. Activision notes that additional security measures may be enforced, so an otherwise complete installation can still be blocked by an unsupported security setup.
- Launch after the entitlement unlocks. Open the Modern Warfare 4/Call of Duty hub after the published Early Access date arrives in your region. Select DMZ from the available modes. If the tile is missing, use the troubleshooting branches below instead of downloading the old Beta.
Download and install instructions by platform
PlayStation 5
- Open the PlayStation Store or your Game Library on the account that made the digital purchase.
- Find the purchased Modern Warfare 4 title and select Download.
- Allow the base game and any required shared Call of Duty components to finish installing.
- Start the game from the home screen and choose DMZ from the in-game hub after the entitlement unlocks.
If the title is not shown, switch to the purchasing account, review the transaction history, and refresh the library. A disc-based installation should not be treated as proof of the digital Early Access benefit.
Xbox Series X|S
- Open My games & apps.
- Choose Full library, then All owned games.
- Select the Call of Duty or Modern Warfare 4 product associated with your digital purchase.
- Choose Install, select the available storage location, and wait for the installation to complete.
- Launch the game hub and select DMZ once the account is eligible.
If your Xbox purchase is marked as Xbox Play Anywhere, the same purchase may provide Xbox console and Xbox PC access. Verify the listing and account entitlement rather than assuming every edition has that designation.

Battle.net

- Choose All Games and select the Modern Warfare 4 product.
- Click Install, select the installation location, and let Battle.net finish any updates.
- Launch the game and choose DMZ from the installed Call of Duty experience.
A permanently banned Battle.net account may be ineligible for online play or purchase. If the product page is unavailable, verify account standing before reinstalling the launcher.
Microsoft Store PC or Xbox app
Open the library associated with the purchasing Microsoft account, select the purchased title, and use the download or install control. The exact button text can differ between the Microsoft Store and Xbox app, but the entitlement must be visible in that library. After installation, launch the game hub and complete Activision account linking.
Nintendo Switch 2
Use Nintendo’s store and library flow for the purchased digital edition. Search the account’s purchased software, select the download option, and wait for the title to finish installing. The general product listing identifies Nintendo as a platform, while the platform announcement specifically names Nintendo Switch 2; availability can therefore depend on the regional storefront and the edition offered there.
Requirements before the first launch
- Activision account: Required for the online experience. Link the platform account you used for the purchase.
- Internet connection: Required continuously for DMZ. Activision cites texture streaming as a reason an offline mode is not available for this experience.
- Mobile number: May be requested during account or security verification.
- PC TPM 2.0: Required on PC.
- PC Secure Boot: Required on PC, with potentially additional security enforcement.
- Eligible account standing: Permanent Activision or Battle.net bans can prevent online play or purchasing.
- Storage and updates: The store page for your edition is the authority for the current install size and free-space requirement. Keep additional room available for patches because the exact size can change.
Enable TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot in the computer’s UEFI/firmware settings only if your hardware and operating-system configuration support them. If Windows reports that either feature is unavailable, consult the motherboard or system manufacturer’s documentation before changing firmware settings; do not disable security controls simply to force the game to start.

What to expect on the unlock date
Early Access is an entitlement check, not a separate game download named “DMZ Early Access.” The normal flow is to install Modern Warfare 4 or the Call of Duty hub, sign in, and then see DMZ become selectable when the server-side entitlement is active. The exact clock time may differ by region and can be delayed by maintenance, outages or a revised schedule.
Plan to finish the large base installation and any day-one update before the window begins. A completed download does not bypass an account, platform or server restriction, and an early tile appearing in the menu does not guarantee that matchmaking is already open.

The store shows no purchase
- Sign out and back in to the platform account that completed the transaction.
- Check the order history and confirm that the item is a digital Standard or Vault Edition, not a physical listing or an unrelated add-on.
- On Xbox or Microsoft Store PC, verify that the same Microsoft account owns the game on the device.
- On Steam or Battle.net, confirm that the launcher is using the purchasing account, not a family member’s or secondary login.
The game installs, but DMZ is locked
- Confirm that the platform date has reached the October 20 Pacific-Time window and allow for regional rollout or maintenance.
- Close the game completely, restart the platform, and sign in again so the entitlement is rechecked.
- Verify that the Activision account is linked to the same platform account that owns the preorder.
- Check the official game status channels for an outage before deleting the installation.
You downloaded the old DMZ Beta
Stop using that package for the 2026 mode. The earlier free-to-play DMZ Beta was distributed either as part of the Modern Warfare II installation or as a standalone platform download. It is a separate product path and does not serve as the Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Early Access client. Install the new Modern Warfare 4/Call of Duty hub associated with your current digital purchase instead.
PC security blocks startup
- In Windows system information, check whether the machine is booted in UEFI mode and whether Secure Boot is enabled.
- Open the firmware settings and confirm TPM 2.0 is available and enabled under the manufacturer’s security or trusted-computing menu.
- Apply firmware changes carefully, then restart Windows and launch the game again.
- If the hardware does not support the required controls, the PC may not meet the game’s online security requirements; use a supported platform rather than attempting an unsupported bypass.
Download errors or repeated updates
- Use a wired or stable wireless connection and pause other large downloads.
- Keep sufficient free storage for the base game and updates.
- Restart the launcher and resume the download; avoid repeatedly deleting partial files unless the platform’s repair or verify function fails.
- Check whether the platform service is experiencing an outage before changing account settings.
How the new DMZ differs from the old Beta
The old Modern Warfare II DMZ Beta had its own installation choices: it could be installed with Modern Warfare II or downloaded as a standalone free-to-play package from a platform store. That history is why a search for “DMZ download” can lead to the wrong client.

The 2026 DMZ is presented as part of Modern Warfare 4. Its Early Access entitlement comes from a qualifying digital Modern Warfare 4 purchase, and it is launched from the new game’s installed hub. Do not infer that ownership of the older Beta, Modern Warfare II, or an old DMZ shortcut grants access to the new release.
What DMZ is in Modern Warfare 4
The official description calls DMZ a living combat sandbox in which players loot, fight, negotiate, betray and extract, either alone or with a squad. The new version adds changing weather, dynamic military objectives and moving hostile forces, so the match state can evolve while a team is deciding whether to continue looting or leave.
Joe Cecot, Infinity Ward Studio Multiplayer Creative Director, described the design this way: “We like to think of DMZ as an action extraction shooter.” That framing explains the central risk-and-reward loop: enter with a plan, acquire resources, react to other players and the environment, and extract before the run collapses. It does not change the purchase requirement for Early Access.
Key decisions before you buy
| Your priority | Best-supported choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Play DMZ before the worldwide launch | Digital Standard or Vault Edition on the intended platform | Both digital editions are documented as eligible. |
| Play on console and Xbox PC | An Xbox Play Anywhere listing, when available | Activision states that qualifying purchases can provide both Xbox console and Xbox PC access, subject to requirements. |
| Own a boxed copy at launch | Physical PS5 or Xbox Series X edition | Suitable for launch ownership, but the early-access benefit is not established. |
| Avoid account or platform surprises | Purchase, link and install through one account ecosystem | The entitlement is tied to the platform purchase and requires Activision linking. |
| Play on a PC | Verify TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and account requirements first | Security checks can prevent online access even when the game is installed. |
Bottom line
Purchase a digital Standard or Vault Edition of Modern Warfare 4 through the platform where you intend to play, link that platform account to Activision, install the Modern Warfare 4/Call of Duty hub, and launch DMZ from it when Early Access opens on October 20, 2026 (PT). Use the platform’s own library workflow, keep a continuous internet connection, and do not confuse the new client with the separate Modern Warfare II DMZ Beta.
