To join a RedM server, install a legitimate and fully updated PC copy of Red Dead Redemption 2, download the RedM client from redm.net, open RedM, choose Play, find a server, and select Connect. If a community gives you an IP address, port, or cfx.re/join link, press F8 and run the appropriate connect command. What RedM is
RedM is a multiplayer modification for Red Dead Redemption 2 that lets players enter customized dedicated servers powered by Cfx. Each server is operated by its own community, so the available rules, role-play standards, approval process, and gameplay systems vary from one server to another.

RedM is a PC client. It is not a replacement copy of Red Dead Redemption 2; it uses your installed game files. You therefore need the base game installed and updated before the RedM connection steps can work.

Requirements before you install or join

There is no separate RedM connection method for an unofficial game copy, and changing launchers does not remove the requirement for a legitimate, updated PC installation.
What the PC game costs and where to get it
The prerequisite is the PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2. Official purchase information identifies Steam, Epic Games Store, and Rockstar Warehouse as purchase channels. Prices, sales, regional taxes, editions, and launcher terms can change, so check the current store listing before paying. Search for Red Dead Redemption 2 for PC, confirm that the listing is a PC product, and make sure the edition can be launched through the account and storefront you intend to use.
Buying the console edition does not satisfy a PC client requirement. Likewise, an incomplete or unauthorized copy is not a workaround for RedM. Keep the launcher account that owns the game available because the installation must remain associated with a legitimate purchase while you use RedM.
Install RedM
- Install the base game first. Install Red Dead Redemption 2 for PC through a supported channel such as Steam, Epic Games Store, or Rockstar Warehouse.
- Complete every game update. Do not start the RedM setup while the launcher is still downloading or applying an update. A partially updated installation does not meet the stated requirement.
- Download the client. Go to redm.net and download the RedM client from the official site.
- Install and launch RedM. Follow the installer prompts, then open RedM after the base game is present and current. The first launch may need to locate or validate the existing game installation.
- Wait for the client to finish loading. Once the RedM interface appears, use the Play tab to browse servers or open the client console for a direct connection.
RedM and the base game are separate pieces: updating or reinstalling the game does not replace the RedM client, and installing the client does not supply a copy of Red Dead Redemption 2.
If you have more than one game installation or launcher, check which copy RedM is detecting rather than assuming it selected the right folder. The important checks are authenticity, PC compatibility, and a completed update. If any of those is uncertain, resolve it in the game launcher before troubleshooting a server address.
Join through the RedM server browser
The browser is the normal route when you do not already have a server address.
- Open RedM and select Play. This is the tab that exposes the public server list.
- Search by server name. Enter the community’s name as it is written in its listing. If you only know the type of experience you want, use the available filters to narrow the list.
- Inspect the server entry. Read the description and any listed access notes before connecting. A listing can point you to additional rules or an onboarding process.
- Select the server and choose Connect. RedM will begin contacting the server and downloading or preparing the resources that server uses.
- Wait for the world to load. Resource loading is part of the first connection. Keep the client open while it completes rather than repeatedly starting new connection attempts.
- Complete any community gate. If the server asks for an application, whitelist approval, rules acknowledgement, or verification, follow the instructions supplied by that community.
If a server does not appear by name, a current RedM hosting guide documents another browser technique: type > followed by the server IP into the search bar. Use the exact address supplied by the server operator; do not add spaces or substitute a different port.

Connect directly with F8
Direct connection is useful when a server gives you an IP and port or a cfx.re/join invitation link.
- Start RedM. You can use this method from the client without first finding the server in the public list.
- Open the console. Press F8. Cfx.re documents F8 as the shortcut for the client console.
- Enter one command in the console. Replace the angle-bracket text with the address supplied by the server:
connect <server-ip:port>connect <cfx.re/join-link>
The documented examples are connect 127.0.0.1:30120 for an IP-and-port address and connect cfx.re/join/y4lg95 for a join link.
- Press Enter. RedM will attempt the connection and then load the server’s resources.
- Follow the server’s access instructions. A successful technical connection does not automatically grant permission to play on a private or role-play community.
Copy the address exactly. An IP without its port, a mistyped port, an incomplete join link, or extra characters can send the request to the wrong destination or prevent it from being parsed.

Use only one complete command at a time. Do not type the angle brackets shown in the template; they indicate the part you must replace. For example, enter connect 127.0.0.1:30120, not connect <127.0.0.1:30120>.
Why a server may require more than Connect
RedM handles the client-to-server connection, but each community controls its own admission process. Treat the browser or F8 step as the technical entry point, not a guarantee of immediate access.

One server-specific onboarding guide, for example, uses a two-step verification process and directs applicants to Discord support channels. That process is not a universal RedM requirement; it is an example of a rule imposed by an individual community.
Read the policy before submitting personal information. The server’s own rules should explain what is required, where to submit it, and how approval is communicated. RedM itself cannot approve a whitelist request or override a community’s age, identity, or Discord policy.

Read the server’s current description and rules because names, access policies, and connection details can change independently of the RedM client.
A server with a direct join link may be easier to reach, while a searchable public listing is easier to discover without an invitation. Neither method says anything by itself about role-play quality, moderation, economy systems, or reliability. Use the community’s description and support channels to verify those details.
Troubleshoot a failed RedM connection
There is no single fix that applies to every RedM error. Start with the symptom and verify the facts that the official connection instructions actually depend on.

- Confirm that your copy of Red Dead Redemption 2 is legitimate and installed on PC.
- Open the relevant game launcher and verify that the game is fully updated.
- Make sure you installed the RedM client from redm.net, then launch it after the base game installation is complete.
If those conditions are satisfied but the client still fails, record the exact error text before seeking help. A precise message is more useful than a general statement that RedM does not work.
The server is missing from the list
- Search the exact server name in the Play tab and review the available filters.
- Ask the server operator whether it is currently online, private, or undergoing an update.
- If you have an IP, try the documented browser format: type
>followed by the server IP in the search bar. - If the community supplied a
cfx.re/joinlink, use the F8 method instead of relying on the public listing.
The F8 command fails
- Open the console with F8 and use the command form
connect address, replacingaddresswith the complete IP-and-port value or join link. - Check every character, including the port after the colon and the full
cfx.re/join/...path. - Ask the server operator to confirm that the address is current. A changed or offline endpoint cannot be corrected from the RedM client.
- Save the exact console response so the server’s support team can distinguish an address problem from an admission requirement.
You connect but are denied or sent to onboarding
Check the community’s application, whitelist, rules, age or identity verification, and Discord instructions. These controls are server-side, so only that community can approve an account or explain why an application was rejected.
The world remains in a loading state
RedM must load the server’s resources after a connection is accepted. Check whether the server is busy, queued, unavailable, or updating, and use the support channel identified by that community. Do not assume that a loading screen proves the base game or RedM installation is defective without an exact error or a server-status confirmation.
When asking for help, include the route you used (browser or F8), the exact server name or address, the full error text, and whether you completed the community’s onboarding. This lets staff separate a bad address from a whitelist decision or a temporary server outage.
