A DayZ .bat file is a repeatable Windows launch script for DayZServer_x64.exe. Save it beside the executable, change into that folder before launching, and pass the configuration, port, profile directory, logging switches, and any mod parameters on the command line. This reliable starter works for a vanilla server:
Godlike.Host offers hosted DayZ servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
@echo off
cd /d "%~dp0"
start "DayZ Server" /wait "DayZServer_x64.exe" ^
-config=serverDZ.cfg ^
-port=2302 ^
-profiles=profiles ^
-dologs -adminlog -netlog -freezecheck
The batch file does not replace serverDZ.cfg; it tells the executable which configuration file to load and supplies settings that are easier to keep in the launch command.

Prepare the Windows machine and server directory before writing the command. The dedicated-server files must already be installed, including DayZServer_x64.exe and your configuration file. Keep start.bat in the same directory as the executable. That placement lets the script use predictable relative paths instead of depending on whichever folder Windows happens to use when the file is double-clicked.
- A Windows installation with the DayZ dedicated-server files.
DayZServer_x64.exein the folder that will contain the script.- A valid
serverDZ.cfg. Every configuration line in that file must end with a semicolon. - A profile directory, normally named
profiles. Create it if it does not exist, or let the server create it if your installation permits that. - A chosen game port, normally
2302, that is not already used by another service. - Windows Firewall and, for internet play, router rules that allow the selected port.
Use a plain-text editor such as Notepad. In the Save dialog, select All files and save the filename as start.bat, not start.bat.txt. If Windows hides extensions, enable file-name extensions in File Explorer so you can verify the result.

Build a vanilla DayZ start.bat file
- Open the folder containing
DayZServer_x64.exe. - Create a new text file and rename it
start.bat. - Paste the following script:
@echo off
cd /d "%~dp0"
start "DayZ Server" /wait "DayZServer_x64.exe" ^
-config=serverDZ.cfg ^
-port=2302 ^
-profiles=profiles ^
-dologs -adminlog -netlog -freezecheck
- Save the file in the server directory.
- Double-click
start.bat, or run it from Command Prompt so that startup messages remain visible. - Watch the console for a successful initialization, then inspect the profile directory for the generated RPT and other logs.
This command starts the executable with the configuration file serverDZ.cfg, listens on port 2302, writes profile and log data under profiles, and enables the diagnostic logs most useful when a first launch fails.
What every part of the launch command does
| Argument or line | Purpose | When to change it |
|---|---|---|
@echo off |
Suppresses command echoing so the console shows server output rather than each batch instruction. | Leave it in place unless you are deliberately debugging the batch file itself. |
cd /d "%~dp0" |
Changes the working drive and directory to the folder containing the batch file. %~dp0 expands to that file’s drive and path. |
Keep it when using relative paths such as serverDZ.cfg, profiles, and mod folders. |
start "DayZ Server" /wait |
Creates a process with the title “DayZ Server.” /wait keeps the batch process attached until the server process exits. |
Remove /wait only when you intentionally want the script to return immediately. |
DayZServer_x64.exe |
The DayZ dedicated-server executable. | Change it only if your installation uses a different executable name. |
-config=serverDZ.cfg |
Selects the DayZ configuration file. The filename is determined by this command-line option. | Use another filename when maintaining separate configurations, such as test and production settings. |
-port=2302 |
Sets the game port on which the server listens. | Choose a free port for additional servers or to avoid a conflict, then use that same port in firewall and router rules. |
-profiles=profiles |
Sets the profile directory used for logs, dumps, and BattlEye, BEC, or RCON-related files described by the server documentation. | Use an absolute path when you deliberately store profiles elsewhere; quote paths containing spaces. |
-dologs |
Enables log messages in the server RPT file. | Keep it enabled while diagnosing startup or runtime problems. |
-adminlog |
Enables the administrator log and the logging needed by admin-log settings. | Keep it enabled when you need an auditable record of administrative activity. |
-netlog |
Enables network logging. | Use it when investigating connection or network behavior. |
-freezecheck |
Stops the server after a prolonged freeze and creates a dump file. | Leave it enabled for unattended servers so a hard freeze produces evidence instead of hanging indefinitely. |
Windows batch syntax that prevents common launch errors
Why cd /d "%~dp0" matters
A batch file can be started from a shortcut, a scheduled task, or another directory. Without the directory change, -config=serverDZ.cfg and -mod=@Example are resolved relative to the caller’s working directory. The server may then report that a file or folder is missing even though it is beside the executable. The /d switch also changes drives, so a script on D: works when launched from a prompt on C:.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy the title appears after start
Windows treats the first quoted argument after start as the new console-window title. Therefore start "DayZ Server" /wait "DayZServer_x64.exe" deliberately supplies a title before the executable path. Omitting that title can make Windows interpret a quoted executable path incorrectly.
Using carets for a readable command
A caret (^) at the end of a line continues the same command on the next line. Do not put trailing spaces after the caret. You can avoid line-continuation issues by keeping the entire launch command on one line:
@echo off
cd /d "%~dp0"
start "DayZ Server" /wait "DayZServer_x64.exe" -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2302 -profiles=profiles -dologs -adminlog -netlog -freezecheck
Quoting paths
Relative names without spaces do not need quotes. Quote any executable, directory, or variable value that contains spaces. The executable is quoted in the examples even when its current name has no spaces, which makes the script safer if the installation is moved later.
Vanilla and modded launch files
A vanilla server needs no -mod argument. A modded server adds client-and-server mods with -mod and server-only mods with -serverMod.

| Launch style | Use | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Vanilla | Runs the base game without additional mod folders. | Omit both mod switches. |
-mod |
Loads mods that run on the server and are also presented to clients. | Separate folders with semicolons; preserve dependency order. |
-serverMod |
Loads server-only mods that are not broadcast to clients. | Use it for tools intended to remain exclusively on the server. |
Add mods without breaking startup
Use exact folder names
Copy each mod folder name exactly as it appears beside the executable, including its leading @, capitalization, spaces, and punctuation. A spelling difference in the batch file is enough to prevent loading.
Separate entries with semicolons
The value for -mod is one semicolon-separated list, not a comma-separated list and not several repeated switches. The example "-mod=@CF;@VPPAdminTools" loads two folders. Quoting the complete assignment keeps the value intact if a folder name contains spaces.
Put dependencies first
List a framework before the mod that requires it. For example, if an administration tool depends on a framework, place the framework’s folder first. Clients must have the corresponding client-and-server mods and compatible versions; a server-only mod belongs under -serverMod instead.
Check the logs when a mod fails
Keep -dologs, -adminlog, and -netlog enabled while adding mods. Read the RPT and profile logs for an incorrect folder, a missing dependency, or a load-order error before changing several entries at once.

Make the batch file reusable with variables
The DayZ server supports batch variables in startup arguments. Defining values once makes it easier to switch ports, configurations, or mod sets without editing every argument:
@echo off
set "SERVER_EXE=DayZServer_x64.exe"
set "CONFIG_FILE=serverDZ.cfg"
set "SERVER_PORT=2302"
set "PROFILE_DIR=profiles"
set "MODS=@CF;@VPPAdminTools"
cd /d "%~dp0"
start "DayZ Server" /wait "%SERVER_EXE%" ^
-config="%CONFIG_FILE%" ^
-port=%SERVER_PORT% ^
-profiles="%PROFILE_DIR%" ^
"-mod=%MODS%" ^
-dologs -adminlog -netlog -freezecheck
The set "NAME=value" form avoids accidentally storing a trailing space in the variable. Keep numeric values such as the port unquoted unless the command specifically requires a quoted path.
Variable for a mission override
If the mission selected in the configuration is not the one you need, define a full path and pass it with -mission:
set "MISSION_PATH=%USERPROFILE%DocumentsDayZStablempmissionsdayzOffline.enoch"
start "DayZ Server" /wait "%SERVER_EXE%" -config="%CONFIG_FILE%" -mission="%MISSION_PATH%" -port=%SERVER_PORT% -profiles="%PROFILE_DIR%"
Use -mission only when you need to override the mission chosen by the configuration. Otherwise, leave mission selection in serverDZ.cfg so there is one authoritative setting.

Useful optional startup switches
| Switch | Effect | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
-BEpath=... |
Selects a custom BattlEye directory. | Use an absolute, quoted path when the default BattlEye location is unsuitable. |
-cpuCount=... |
Sets the number of logical CPU cores used for parallel tasks. | Do not set it above the number of logical cores available to the machine. |
-mission=... |
Overrides the mission path selected by the configuration. | Quote the path, especially when it contains a user name or another space. |
-storage=... |
Defines a custom storage root. | Use it when you intentionally separate save data from the default server location. |
Add optional switches one at a time and confirm the resulting path or behavior in the startup output. A minimal command is easier to troubleshoot than a long command containing settings you do not currently need.

First-launch verification checklist
- Confirm that
start.batandDayZServer_x64.exeare in the same directory. - Open
serverDZ.cfgand verify that every configuration statement ends in a semicolon. - Confirm that the
profilesdirectory exists or can be created by the server. - Run the script from Command Prompt and watch for an orderly startup rather than an immediate return or crash.
- Open the profile directory and inspect the RPT and other generated logs.
- Check that the server appears in the browser and test a local connection first.
- For internet access, verify Windows Firewall and router forwarding for the selected game port.
- If using mods, verify exact folder names, dependency order, client/server classification, and semicolon syntax before inviting players.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The window closes immediately
Run the file from an already-open Command Prompt instead of double-clicking it. The visible error may identify a missing executable, malformed argument, or inaccessible configuration. Confirm that the working-directory line is present and that the executable name matches the installed file exactly.
The server says it cannot find the configuration
Check both the filename in -config= and the file’s location. Because cd /d "%~dp0" makes relative paths resolve beside the batch file, a missing file at that point usually means the name is wrong or the file was saved with an extra extension such as .txt.
Logs are missing
Verify -profiles=profiles, create the directory if necessary, and make sure the Windows account running the server can write there. Keep -dologs enabled so the RPT receives diagnostic messages.
The server starts but is not visible online
Visibility requires more than a successful process launch. Confirm that the selected port is free, Windows Firewall allows the server, and the router forwards the required traffic to the correct machine. A port mismatch between -port and the forwarding rule prevents outside players from reaching the server.
A mod is ignored or clients are rejected
Compare every folder name with the directory listing, use semicolons between -mod entries, and place dependencies before dependent mods. Ensure a client has every client-and-server mod in compatible versions. Move a server-only package to -serverMod when it is not intended for clients, then inspect the RPT for the first load error.

The process freezes
Keep -freezecheck enabled. It causes the server to stop after a prolonged freeze and creates a dump file that can help identify the failure instead of leaving an unresponsive process running indefinitely.
CPU settings cause instability
If you added -cpuCount, reduce it to a value at or below the machine’s available logical-core count. Remove the switch temporarily to establish whether the custom setting is involved.
Relative paths versus absolute paths
| Approach | Advantages | Risks and best use |
|---|---|---|
Relative paths after cd /d "%~dp0" |
The folder can be moved or copied as a unit, and the command remains short. | All referenced files and folders must maintain the expected layout. This is the best default for a self-contained server directory. |
| Absolute paths | Files can live on separate drives or storage volumes and are unambiguous. | Every move or account change requires editing the script; spaces require careful quoting. |
Use relative paths for the executable, configuration, profiles, and mod folders unless you have a specific reason to separate them. Use variables when an absolute path is unavoidable so it is defined once.
Choosing local hosting or managed hosting
A local Windows server and a managed DayZ host solve different operational problems. A local batch file gives direct control over the executable, configuration, mods, logs, ports, and update routine, but you must maintain the Windows machine, firewall, router, storage, and restart process. Managed hosting shifts those operating tasks to a provider and can be useful when you do not want to maintain a Windows machine or network forwarding, but the provider’s controls and update procedures replace direct batch-file administration. The launch script remains the right approach when you need hands-on control of the server files.
Maintain the server after it works
- Keep a backup of
serverDZ.cfg,start.bat, and the profile data before changing ports, missions, or mod sets. - Record the selected port and the folders listed under
-modand-serverModso a rebuild uses the same order. - When updating mods, change one group at a time and read the RPT after each restart.
- Retain the logging switches during routine operation; they provide the evidence needed to diagnose a failed restart or connection problem.
- Use
/waitwhen another script or scheduler must know whether the server process has ended. Remove it only for a deliberate fire-and-forget launch. - Test a change locally before relying on browser visibility or inviting remote players.
The essential separation is simple: start.bat controls how the executable is launched, while serverDZ.cfg contains the server’s game configuration. Keeping those responsibilities distinct makes the setup easier to move, diagnose, and restore.
