1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can run a custom Android interface on the first-generation, 2017 Echo Spot by unlocking its bootloader with the community amonet-rook method, replacing Fire OS with an unofficial LineageOS 18.1 build based on Android 11, and then installing or building an interface for that system. This is an advanced, unofficial modification—not an Amazon setting or a one-click jailbreak—and it can erase the device’s data.
First confirm that your Spot is model VN94DQ / AEORK, codename rook. The 2024 Echo Spot is a different release and is not the documented target for this process.

Confirm that your Echo Spot is the supported generation
The documented Android route targets the 2017 first-generation Echo Spot, identified by the community project as model VN94DQ / AEORK and codename rook. Do not start based only on the product name: Amazon also sells a 2024 Echo Spot, and its support information concerns that release rather than this unlock procedure. The 2017 instructions do not establish compatibility with the 2024 model. See the TECHO5 Spot project and Amazon’s Echo Spot (2024 Release) support page.

What the Android modification involves
The process has several distinct stages: unlock the 2017 Spot, verify it boots into TWRP recovery, install the unofficial LineageOS 18.1 build, and prepare LineageOS for the downstream app or interface you want to use. The project’s getting-started guide documents this route. It is community documentation, not an Amazon-approved procedure.
The reason for the OS replacement is significant: the Spot’s stock Fire OS 5 is based on Android 5.1.1, whereas the community LineageOS 18.1 build is based on Android 11. A “custom skin” is therefore not simply layered over the original Amazon interface; the documented approach first replaces the operating system.

Prepare the computer, cable, and device
Before beginning, gather the items and account for the risks below. The project guide provides setup instructions for Windows, Linux, and macOS; follow the instructions for your specific operating system.
Recommended Free Tools
- A Windows, Linux, or macOS computer.
- Python 3, Git, and Android platform-tools, including
adbandfastboot. - A micro-USB data cable. A charge-only cable will not carry the required data connection.
- A backup plan. The guide says to expect the Spot’s data to be wiped and describes backing up partitions from TWRP before replacing firmware.
The micro-USB port is under the back cover. An iFixit teardown also documents the port and notes that holding all three top buttons can enter FASTBOOT mode. That hardware observation is useful context, but it is not a substitute for the project’s complete unlock instructions.

Follow the community installation sequence
Use the live project guide for the actual commands and operating-system-specific setup. Do not substitute instructions for another Echo device or assume a command from an older guide still applies.
- Check firmware compatibility first. Compare the Spot’s current Fire OS build with the supported versions listed in the live
amonet-rookinstructions. The project notes that unsupported builds are refused; do not update or downgrade blindly to try to make the device compatible. - Set up the computer and connection. Install Python 3, Git, and Android platform-tools as directed for your OS. Connect the Spot using its rear micro-USB port and a data-capable cable. Linux users also need the serial-port access described in the guide.
- Unlock with
amonet-rook. Follow the project’s exact instructions for the matchingrookdevice. The guide describes a Windowsfastbrickroute and a Linux route; use the applicable documented path rather than mixing procedures. - Confirm recovery boots. Check that the device starts into TWRP as directed. Back up the relevant partitions from TWRP before proceeding with firmware replacement.
- Install and check LineageOS. Install the unofficial LineageOS 18.1 build using the project’s instructions, then verify that the Spot boots successfully into it.
- Prepare LineageOS for your chosen software. The guide next instructs users to enable Wi-Fi and rooted debugging before installing downstream software. Follow its exact settings and steps for the particular project you intend to run.
Firmware compatibility is a moving prerequisite: the project’s hardware notes identify supported Fire OS builds and say unsupported versions are rejected, but those details can change with the unlock tooling. Treat the live installation guide as authoritative immediately before starting; do not infer compatibility from another Echo model or an older list.

Choose an Android interface—or a different repurposing route
LineageOS with a custom Android UI
A custom Android UI is a separate project that runs on the modified system. Android Authority’s report describes an individual’s circular interface running over LineageOS and interacting with software on a PC. That example demonstrates a possible direction, not a plug-and-play dashboard, a broadly supported ROM feature, or a guarantee that every Alexa function remains available.
TECHO5 Spot with Alpine Linux
If your goal is a local smart-home display rather than an Android skin, TECHO5 Spot documents a separate route that replaces Fire OS with Alpine Linux. It uses a small daemon and local Home Assistant integration, with screen and voice features. This is a Linux-based alternative, not an Android interface layered on top of LineageOS; the project repository records its first device running that system on 2026-09-16.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
| Route | What it installs | Intended result | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android | Unofficial LineageOS 18.1 based on Android 11, followed by chosen software | A platform for a custom Android interface | Unlocking, a computer, command-line setup, and a backup are part of the process; the reported UI is an individual project. |
| TECHO5 Spot | Alpine Linux firmware | A local Home Assistant-oriented setup with screen and voice features | It replaces the Android environment; it is not an Android skin. |
What to expect—and what not to assume
- These instructions apply to the identified 2017 model, not every device called Echo Spot.
- Data loss is a real planning consideration, so back up before replacing firmware.
- The custom Android UI example is bespoke and PC-connected; the reporting does not establish a general-purpose tablet experience.
- Neither the Android route nor the Linux alternative is evidence that every stock Alexa feature or Amazon service will be retained.
