If playback buffers, lower that quality temporarily and compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection. Check whether Plex is transcoding, too: a compatible client can often use Direct Play or Direct Stream, while Plex recommends leaving the server’s transcoder quality on Automatic.
These steps apply to local playback. Remote-streaming limits and internet upload speed matter when watching away from home, not as the first fix for a player on the same LAN.

First identify what you are streaming
“Plex Live TV” can mean antenna broadcasts delivered through a tuner connected to Plex Media Server, while some viewers use the term loosely for other Plex video streams. The source affects setup: antenna-based over-the-air Live TV requires a compatible tuner and antenna connected to the server. Plex gives a network tuner such as HDHomeRun as an example in its Live TV & DVR setup guide.

Also establish whether the player is local or remote. A phone, television, or streaming device connected to the same home network is using local playback. If the player is outside the home, remote quality limits and internet connection capacity become relevant.

Choose a starting quality for local playback
In the Plex app on the player, look for its video playback or streaming quality settings; labels and menu paths vary by client, so there is no single path that applies to every Plex app. Plex explains that higher quality requires more network bandwidth in its “How do I choose the right Streaming Quality in an app?” support article.
- Wired local player: Start with the highest or original local quality available. Plex says a wired connection can typically use the highest available quality setting, though the stream still needs adequate network capacity.
- Wi-Fi player that buffers: Temporarily lower local streaming quality and see whether playback stabilizes. This is a diagnostic comparison, not proof that the router is the cause. If practical, test the same player or server over Ethernet to reduce Wi-Fi variability.
Plex’s reviewed guidance does not establish a universal Wi-Fi speed threshold or router model that guarantees smooth local Live TV. Choose based on the actual network and the quality the stream requests, rather than relying on a single Mbps figure.

Let the client play a compatible source directly
When the player supports the broadcast or media format, Direct Play or Direct Stream can avoid some server-side conversion. Check the playback settings available in the client and allow these modes when supported. Plex’s client guidance describes the options and their availability, including its Roku playback settings.

Keep server transcoder quality on Automatic
If Plex converts the stream for the client, leave the server’s transcoder quality set to Automatic as the default. Plex recommends this for most users in its transcoder settings guidance. During troubleshooting, check Plex playback status to see whether conversion is involved and inspect server CPU load. The available guidance does not establish one CPU requirement that fits every tuner, broadcast, and client.

If Plex intermittently fails to find a network tuner, assign it a stable local IP address or create a DHCP reservation in the router. Plex recommends a stable address for network tuners such as HDHomeRun in its Live TV & DVR setup guide. This addresses discovery reliability; it is distinct from adjusting playback quality for an already-playing stream.

When remote-streaming settings matter
For playback outside your home, compare the requested stream quality with both the server’s internet upload capacity and the player’s download capacity. Plex’s server bandwidth and transcoding limits guidance and remote-access setup article cover these constraints. Plex says the remote stream limit should be based on the upload speed available to the server; its remote article was last modified September 8, 2026.
Remote access may require router configuration. Plex documents UPnP/NAT-PMP or manual port forwarding; its manual setup guidance specifies forwarding to the server’s internal port 32400. These internet-facing settings do not, by themselves, explain ordinary buffering for a player on the home LAN.
Quick Recap
Quick troubleshooting order
- Confirm whether the stream is antenna-tuner Live TV or another Plex source, and whether the player is on the LAN or remote.
- On the player, find local streaming quality in the app’s playback settings. Start high or original on a capable wired home network; if playback buffers, lower quality temporarily and observe the result.
- Where practical, compare Wi-Fi playback with a wired Ethernet connection for the player or server.
- Check playback status and client options for Direct Play, Direct Stream, or transcoding. Do not force direct playback if the client cannot support the source.
- If conversion is occurring, keep transcoder quality on Automatic by default and check server CPU load.
- If the network tuner is not discovered consistently, give it a stable local IP or reserve its address in the router.
- Only for remote playback, investigate server upload, client download, remote stream caps, and remote-access configuration.
