Edit the saved map when the layout is basically right and you need a local fix, such as renaming a room, changing a divider, or adding a keep-out zone. Remap when the robot must discover newly accessible space or the map is substantially incomplete. If the map is corrupted, try a supported restore before deleting it; whether you can edit or recover a map depends on the robot model and app.
Choose based on what is wrong with the map
| Problem | Best first choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A room has the wrong name or boundary, or rooms need to be combined or divided | Edit the saved map, if supported | These are local corrections that do not usually require the robot to explore the whole home. iRobot, Roborock S6, and ECOVACS describe room-label or room-boundary editing features in their respective guides. |
| You need to keep the robot out of a spot or clean only a defined area | Add a supported zone or virtual wall | This changes where the robot cleans without rebuilding the floor plan. Available controls vary by model. |
| A newly accessible room or area is missing | Run a mapping pass or a whole-area cleaning mission | The robot needs an opportunity to explore the space. A directed clean of one specific area may not search for newly accessible rooms. |
| The map is badly wrong after an error or appears corrupted | Try a supported restore or map recovery first; remap if recovery fails | Deleting the saved map may remove a recoverable version. If the model offers no useful recovery, follow its reset and remapping instructions. |
| Your model does not update its map during cleaning | Use that model’s reset/remap procedure | For example, iRobot says its i3, i4, and i5 models require deleting the Smart Map and starting a new mapping run for modifications. This does not apply to every robot. |
Manufacturer instructions document room edits in iRobot Imprint Smart Maps, the Roborock S6 map guide, and ECOVACS Map Management. iRobot describes clean and keep-out zones for compatible models, while ECOVACS documents virtual walls in its editor.

When editing the existing map is enough
Editing is the sensible first step when the robot already has a usable overall floor plan and the problem is confined to a room label, divider, room grouping, or cleaning boundary. Open the map editor in the robot’s app and look for the options available for your model; menu names and capabilities are not consistent across brands or generations.

When the robot needs to remap
Use a mapping run or whole-area mission if the map is missing a newly accessible room, the home layout has changed substantially, or the saved plan no longer represents the spaces the robot can reach. iRobot recommends a mapping run or clean-everywhere mission after rearranging furniture or renovating. Its newer ClearView LiDAR instructions also describe discovering additional space during whole-area cleaning. A directed clean of a selected room or zone is not necessarily a substitute: iRobot says that approach will not actively search for new space.
Remapping is not automatically the right response to every small map defect. If a room boundary is simply misplaced and the editor supports divider changes, correcting it in place can avoid unnecessary exploration. If the map is broadly incomplete, editing cannot add space the robot has never discovered.
Recover a damaged map before deleting it
If a robot error left the map unusable, check whether the app supports restoring a saved map or updating from an earlier cleaning map. iRobot documents restoring a prior map report and recommends trying another mapping run if recovery does not help; deletion and starting over are later options in that guidance.

ECOVACS says a restore returns the version that was backed up. If you manually edit a map and want those changes included in a future restore, make a fresh backup after editing. Otherwise, restoring an older backup can bring back the earlier version rather than your latest changes.
Prepare for a mapping run
- Confirm support and map saving. Check the robot’s model-specific instructions and make sure map saving is enabled where applicable. iRobot notes that feature compatibility can depend on the device, app and robot software versions, and region.
- Make the intended rooms accessible. Open doors to spaces that should appear on the map. Roborock’s first-map guidance specifically advises opening doors to the rooms to be mapped.
- Start at the dock and leave it in place. Roborock recommends beginning from the dock and allowing the robot to return to the unmoved dock when creating its first map.
- Let the run finish without interruption. iRobot warns that picking up the robot or dock, or pressing buttons during mapping, can result in an incomplete map.
- Clear obstacles and provide suitable lighting when relevant. Move cables and other snag hazards. iRobot also says lighting helps its vSLAM robots identify landmarks.
Model and app differences matter
iRobot Imprint Smart Maps and ClearView LiDAR
Imprint Smart Maps support map creation and, on compatible models, room labels, divider adjustments, and zones. iRobot says map features depend on the device, app and robot software, and region. Its guidance specifically identifies the i3, i4, and i5 as models that require map deletion and a new mapping run for modifications.
iRobot’s separate Roomba Home App map guide covers ClearView LiDAR models and describes renaming, merging or splitting rooms, adding zones, and finding new space during whole-area cleaning. Saved-map counts vary among the models covered there, so do not treat a listed capacity as a universal iRobot limit.

Roborock S6
The S6 support article covers enabling map saving and editing rooms to combine or divide them. Roborock’s first-map preparation guidance covers starting from the dock, opening doors, and letting the robot return to the dock. These instructions are specific source guidance for the S6 and first-map preparation, not evidence that every Roborock generation uses identical menus.
ECOVACS
ECOVACS documents map editing, virtual walls, backup, and restore in its Map Management guide. That US page, updated September 13, 2023, says the described function can store up to three permanent maps and one temporary map. A separate multi-floor map guide, updated March 9, 2023, describes two permanent maps plus one new environment map. These are differing page-specific capacities, not a dependable brand-wide limit; verify the exact model and app workflow.
Quick Recap
Quick decision checklist
- Map mostly matches the home; only a label, divider, room grouping, or zone needs fixing: edit the saved map if the model supports it.
- A reachable room is absent or the layout has changed: give the robot a mapping run or whole-area mission with access to the intended spaces.
- The map is corrupted: check for a supported backup or recovery option before deleting it.
- The model requires a reset to change maps: follow its manufacturer’s remap process rather than applying another model’s steps.
