For a Shopify store you manage, use Shopify Flow to automate product and inventory notifications; for an external or custom system, subscribe to the relevant Shopify webhooks. Choose the event that matches what you mean by “launch”: creating a product, adding a variant, publishing to a sales channel and changing stock are separate events.
Choose the event you actually need to monitor
A product can exist in Shopify without being published to the Online Store, and a stock change does not mean a product has launched. Set up a workflow or integration around the specific change you care about.

- Product created: A new product record is added in Shopify admin or through the API. This does not confirm that the product is visible on the Online Store.
- Variant added: A new option or variant is added to an existing product. This is a distinct event from creating a product.
- Product published: A product is made available on a sales channel. Use a publication signal if storefront visibility is the goal.
- Inventory changed: A variant’s stock level changes. This can support out-of-stock or low-stock alerts, depending on the trigger or integration.
Set up automatic alerts with Shopify Flow
Flow is Shopify’s documented no-code option for automating your own store’s processes. Create a workflow by selecting the appropriate trigger, then add any conditions and actions you need—for example, sending a notification or tagging a product. Shopify describes the Product created trigger as starting a workflow when an employee or third-party app adds a product in Shopify admin or through the API.

Notify when a product is created
Choose Product created when you want to know that a product record has been added. The trigger can run even if the product is not added to the Online Store channel, so it is not by itself proof of a storefront launch.

Track new variants separately
For a new variant on an existing product, use Flow’s Product variant added trigger. Shopify notes that adding a variant does not activate the Product created trigger. See Shopify’s trigger documentation for the distinction.
Alert when a variant reaches zero stock
Use Flow’s Product variant out of stock trigger to react when tracked inventory falls from one or more to zero or less. Inventory tracking must be active for this condition to apply. The trigger is for an out-of-stock event, not a configurable low-stock threshold; see Shopify’s out-of-stock trigger documentation.

Set a low-stock threshold
If you need an alert before stock reaches zero, Shopify’s inventory guidance says Flow can send low-stock notifications and points to inventory alert apps for direct notifications. When evaluating an app, check its threshold controls, notification destinations, variant and location coverage, and fit with your workflow. Shopify’s guidance does not compare individual apps, so verify those capabilities with the app provider.
Monitor publication or inventory through webhooks
If you are building an integration, Shopify documents separate webhook topics for product creation, product updates, product publication and inventory-level updates. Subscribe to the topic that matches the event you need, then process the payload in your system. Shopify’s webhook documentation describes the available topics and delivery behavior.

Publication is not the same as product creation
Use a publication event when the integration needs to detect channel availability rather than merely a new product record. Shopify documents a caveat for product-publication webhook delivery: whether a publishing change is delivered can depend on where that change is made. Confirm the behavior for the publishing path used in your workflow rather than assuming a subscriber receives every Online Store publication change.
Allow for incomplete variant details
Product webhook payloads have limits on variant detail for large products. If your integration needs information that is not present in a payload, fetch the additional variant details from Shopify before acting on the event. Do not treat the webhook as a complete product snapshot in every case; see Shopify’s webhook guidance.

For an audit or investigation, Shopify’s inventory tools let you view adjustment history and reports. Those views help explain past stock movements; Flow triggers and webhooks are the options for reacting automatically to future changes. See Shopify’s inventory guidance.
