First coordinate with the incident-response lead and determine whether you can contain its network access without stopping the device. If trained responders judge that live evidence matters, they may collect it before shutdown; if the appliance presents an urgent risk and cannot be disconnected another way, containment takes priority. Either way, record what you do. A live system can change evidence, and its own tools may lie.
What should you do first?
Treat this as a coordinated incident, not a routine troubleshooting session. The immediate goals are to limit harm to people, services, and other systems while avoiding unnecessary changes to evidence. If the event could have legal, regulatory, contractual, or significant business consequences, involve your organization’s incident-response and legal contacts early; trained digital-forensics help may be appropriate.

- Notify the responsible people through a suitable channel. Contact the incident-response lead, appliance owner, and relevant network or operations staff. Use an out-of-band coordination channel when appropriate: CISA warns that an intruder may monitor activity and react when detection is apparent.
- Establish operational risk. Identify what the appliance controls, what depends on it, and whether taking it offline could affect safety or essential services. For industrial or safety-related equipment, involve the people responsible for safe operation before changing connectivity or power.
- Record its visible state before interacting, if doing so is safe. Note the appliance’s asset identifier, location, role, apparent status, displayed warnings, and the date and time with time zone. Avoid exploratory browsing or logging in just to see what is happening.
- Choose containment and evidence priorities together. Decide whether a network control can reduce the immediate risk while leaving the appliance running long enough for trained responders to collect relevant volatile evidence.
Should you isolate it from the network or power it off?
There is no safe universal instruction to keep every appliance running or to shut every suspected device down. CISA’s StopRansomware Guide advises powering down only when the device cannot otherwise be disconnected, because shutdown can destroy volatile evidence. That is a containment consideration, not a guarantee that network isolation alone prevents harm.
Where the architecture and operational constraints allow, authorized network staff might restrict the appliance at a switch, firewall, or other network control. These are examples to assess for the particular environment, not a prescribed sequence: a control that blocks one route may leave other paths open or disrupt essential management and dependent services. Confirm what the chosen control actually isolates.

| Choice | Potential benefit | Key cost or uncertainty | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Network isolation while the appliance remains on | May limit communication with other systems while preserving its current running state for trained volatile-data collection. | May not stop every harmful action or communication path; can disrupt dependent services. The running system and its output may be compromised. | When authorized responders can apply and verify an effective control, operational impact is understood, and preserving live evidence is worthwhile. |
| Powering the appliance down | Stops the running device and may be necessary when no effective network disconnection is available. | Destroys volatile state such as memory and current operating information, and may interrupt a critical process. | When urgent containment requires it or the appliance cannot otherwise be disconnected, after coordinating with the people responsible for safe operation if circumstances permit. |
Make the choice by weighing the possibility of ongoing harm or spread, the importance of volatile evidence, confidence in live-system output, operational impact, and evidence-handling requirements. If immediate danger is present, protect people and contain the risk; do not delay urgent action to preserve evidence.
Why is live investigation risky?
Some useful evidence exists only while the appliance is running. NIST SP 800-61 Rev. 1, an older incident-handling guide, lists network connections, processes, login sessions, open files, interface configurations, and memory as potentially useful volatile data. It advises collecting relevant volatile information before copying files.

But interacting with a live system changes it. NIST SP 800-86 states: “Every action performed on the system, whether initiated by a person or by the OS itself, will almost certainly alter the volatile OS data in some way.” A login, command, or tool can change state, so investigation should be a deliberate, documented decision by someone trained to collect the evidence that matters.
There is also a trust problem: if the kernel or utilities are compromised, familiar commands may report false information. NIST SP 800-86 cautions: “If a system has been fully compromised, it is possible that rootkits and other malicious utilities have been installed that alter the system’s functionality at the kernel level.” Do not treat apparently normal output from the appliance as proof that it is clean or that its account is accurate.

How should trained responders collect evidence?
There is no one-size-fits-all command list for Linux appliances. The build, distribution, access method, storage design, incident scope, and possible legal use of the evidence all affect what to collect and how. A trained responder should use an established procedure and trusted tools prepared for the situation, rather than relying on utilities found on a potentially compromised host.
- Decide whether volatile collection is necessary and safe before accessing the appliance. NIST SP 800-86 says its guidance is not a substitute for legal advice or organizational policy.
- Record the device’s identifiers, current time and time zone, handlers, actions, tools, commands, outputs, and any observed errors. Preserve original notes and record transfers and storage locations.
- When relevant and feasible, prioritize volatile categories such as current connections, running processes, login sessions, open files, interface configuration, and memory. NIST SP 800-61 Rev. 1 is legacy technical guidance for these categories, not the latest incident-response publication.
- Document any limits: what could not be collected, why, and what changed during collection. Do not imply that missing data proves the activity did not occur.
How do you preserve storage for offline analysis?
After volatile collection when appropriate, responders can consider acquiring a full forensic image to protected media and analyzing a copy rather than the original. NIST SP 800-61 Rev. 1 recommends a full disk image on sanitized write-protectable or write-once media after volatile data is acquired. It explains that imaging can preserve deleted files and fragments that an ordinary file-system backup may not capture, and that working from an image is safer than analyzing the original.

NIST’s older guide says: “After acquiring volatile data, an incident handler with computer forensics training should immediately make a full disk image to sanitized write-protectable or write-once media.” Whether that method is possible depends on the appliance’s storage design and operational constraints: not every appliance exposes a removable drive or standard interface. Do not assume a generic adapter is equivalent to a forensic write blocker or that a write blocker makes a compromised live operating system trustworthy.

How should you analyze and return the appliance to service?
Analyze acquired evidence in a controlled environment, using copies where possible. Establish the likely scope and persistence of the compromise before deciding that cleaning a visible symptom is enough. Coordinate recovery with the appliance owner and incident lead; its hardware, role, dependencies, and vendor-supported recovery options determine what can safely be rebuilt or restored.
Current response framing is in NIST SP 800-61 Rev. 3, which superseded Rev. 2 in April 2025 and places incident response within broader cybersecurity risk management. The detailed live-data and imaging practices described above come from SP 800-86 and the older Rev. 1 incident-handling guide; use them as technical guidance with their age and context understood, not as a replacement for current organizational procedures.
