Bittensor subnet emissions do not translate directly into a fixed TAO return for each staker. The network first issues TAO and allocates it among subnet pools; a subnet then distributes alpha emissions among its owner, miners and validators. A delegator receives a share of a validator’s dividends after that validator’s take, and subnet-staked alpha can rise or fall in TAO value with its pool price.
How emissions become staking rewards
There are two separate stages: allocating network issuance to subnets, then distributing a subnet’s emissions to its participants. Keeping those stages distinct helps explain why a network emission figure is not a personal yield.

1. TAO is issued and allocated among subnets
TAO is minted block by block. Bittensor’s 2026 emissions documentation describes subnet allocation as depending on smoothed EMA price and other factors, including miner burn—not as a fixed percentage paid to every subnet. The resulting TAO is directed into the subnet’s liquidity pool.
The same 2026 documentation reports a rate of 0.5 TAO per block following the first halving in December 2025. This is a documentation snapshot, not a guarantee that the live rate will remain unchanged; check current chain data before relying on it. The documentation also lists a maximum supply of 21 million TAO and a 21 million token cap for each subnet’s alpha.

2. Subnet staking creates an alpha position
When you stake TAO on a non-root subnet, the TAO is swapped through that subnet’s weighted pool for its alpha token. Bittensor’s staking-pools documentation puts it plainly: “Staking on a subnet is not a deposit — it is a swap.” The position is denominated in alpha, so its value in TAO can change as the pool price changes. Protocol liquidity injections are part of pool mechanics; they are not an individual staker’s reward.
3. Alpha emissions accumulate until an epoch
A subnet accrues alpha emissions for settlement at its epoch boundary rather than paying them continuously block by block. Bittensor’s 2026 documentation gives 360 blocks—about 72 minutes—as the default subnet tempo. Individual subnet settings can differ, so this is not a universal settlement schedule.

4. The subnet divides emissions among participants
The documented split assigns 18% of total alpha emissions to the subnet owner. The remainder is divided approximately evenly between miners and validator dividends—about 41% of total emissions for each—subject to the root-staker allocation gate and other chain mechanics. These are subnet-level allocations, not amounts guaranteed to any particular miner, validator or delegator.

A validator’s configured take is deducted before the remaining dividend is distributed to its stakers. In simplified terms, your share depends on your position relative to the stake associated with that validator, as well as the validator’s dividend and settings. The validator and subnet’s performance and protocol conditions affect the dividend stream. Neither the network’s block issuance nor a subnet’s share of emissions is an individual return rate.

Root staking and subnet staking have different exposure

The distinction matters when comparing returns: a subnet position can receive emissions while its alpha changes in TAO value. Root staking avoids that subnet-pool swap exposure, but its dividend mechanism is still subject to protocol eligibility and is not a guaranteed yield.
What determines your realized return?
Your outcome combines the amount and timing of emissions with validator-level distribution and the value of the asset you hold. Before choosing a validator or subnet, assess the relevant factors rather than treating the subnet emission share as an APY:

- Subnet conditions: its allocation and emissions, along with relevant protocol settings.
- Validator: identity, stake distribution and configured take percentage.
- Your position: your stake relative to the stake associated with that validator.
- For subnet staking: alpha pool price and liquidity, plus any applicable swap fee or slippage.
- For root staking: the root dividend mechanism and current eligibility conditions.
Bittensor’s validator guidance points users to identity, stake distribution and take information. Those details help evaluate how a validator handles dividends, but they do not establish a universal or guaranteed current APY. A realized result depends on live protocol parameters and asset prices.

How to interpret the headline figures
Three numbers are easy to misread if their scope is omitted. The block rate describes network issuance, not what one subnet or delegator receives. The owner and participant percentages describe the documented subnet-level distribution, not an individual payout. And the default tempo describes an epoch interval, not continuous reward delivery or a promise that every subnet uses the same interval.
