If you pasted and ran a command prompted by a fake CAPTCHA, browser error, or support message, treat the Windows device as potentially compromised. Stop interacting with the page, contain the device where practical, preserve evidence, and find out what the command did before choosing removal or recovery steps. ClickFix is a social-engineering technique—not one malware family with one universal cleanup command.
What ClickFix means—and why the command matters
ClickFix lures people into running commands themselves, often by presenting a fake verification step or a supposed technical fix. Microsoft describes the tactic as exploiting users’ instinct to resolve minor problems or complete familiar interactions such as CAPTCHA checks: Microsoft Security’s 2025 analysis. The specific command, payload, and follow-on activity vary by campaign.

Some campaigns chain scripts and establish persistence; some payloads may run without leaving an obvious downloaded executable. So a missing file is not proof that nothing happened. Conversely, seeing a command-line tool such as PowerShell in a history or process record is not proof of malware by itself: context and surrounding activity matter.
What to do immediately after running a suspicious command
- Stop. Do not click further prompts or run additional commands from the page. Note what you clicked or pasted, approximately when, and whether the command appeared to finish or triggered an alert.
- Contact your organization if this is a work or school device. Notify IT or security promptly and follow their evidence-preservation instructions. Do not independently reset or clean a managed device unless the response team directs you to.
- For a personal device, limit further exposure. If a suspicious command ran, disconnect network access when feasible while arranging competent help. This is a cautious response, not a guarantee that disconnecting alone contains every risk.
- Preserve what may help an investigation. Keep the suspicious URL, prompt text, screenshots, security alerts, approximate execution time, and clipboard contents if still available. Avoid deleting files or resetting Windows before deciding whether evidence is needed.
How to investigate what ran
Check the interface you used
If you pasted into the Windows Run dialog, a per-user command history may be available at HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerRunMRU. Microsoft documents this location as an investigation lead in its guidance on hunting suspicious RunMRU entries. A missing entry does not rule out execution: Microsoft notes that failed executions do not create one, and commands entered through Terminal or PowerShell may leave different evidence.

Use the history as a clue, not a verdict. Microsoft identifies commands involving tools such as PowerShell, mshta, rundll32, wscript, curl, or wget as potentially suspicious in this context. These tools have legitimate uses too. The exact command, who launched it, its parent process, destination, and surrounding activity determine whether it is concerning.
Correlate evidence around the execution time
With an IT responder or qualified incident-response professional, correlate the command with process launches, downloaded or temporary scripts, outbound connections, scheduled tasks, startup folders, and user-level or system-level autoruns. Campaign writeups illustrate how attackers can chain scripts and establish persistence, but their indicators are variant-specific—not a universal ClickFix signature.

For example, Microsoft’s August 2026 TerminalFix analysis describes a particular campaign and assumes network-level access in that case. That assumption should not be applied automatically to every ClickFix incident. The report supports thorough host investigation; it does not diagnose an individual Windows computer.

How to remove the infection and recover
There is no source-supported universal ClickFix removal command. Recovery depends on what actually ran, what payload was delivered, whether persistence was established, and whether credentials or other systems may have been exposed.

- Determine scope before deleting artifacts. Establish which command and processes ran, what files or scripts appeared, whether there was network activity, and whether persistence mechanisms were created. Preserve evidence needed to answer those questions.
- Remove the identified payload and persistence. Use a responder’s findings and current vendor guidance to remove the specific components. A generic list of files, tasks, or registry locations cannot safely stand in for variant-specific investigation.
- Address possible account exposure. The sources do not establish that every ClickFix payload steals credentials. If evidence suggests credentials may have been exposed, use a known-clean device to secure affected accounts and coordinate changes with the responder. For organizational accounts, follow the organization’s process for investigating sessions, tokens, and related access.
- Validate recovery—or rebuild if confidence is insufficient. If the compromise cannot be confidently scoped or eradicated, a clean rebuild may be appropriate, particularly for managed environments. Do not treat one antivirus scan as proof that a host is clean. CISA’s Ransomware Guide discusses account and persistence remediation in the context of cleaned and rebuilt environments.
When to get professional incident-response help
Escalate promptly for a work or school device, evidence of persistence or unexplained network activity, possible credential exposure, or a computer whose compromise cannot be confidently scoped. A home user who ran a suspicious command should also seek competent help if they cannot determine what it launched or validate that removal succeeded. The appropriate recovery choice depends on evidence, the device’s role, and confidence in cleanup—not simply on whether a scan reports a detection.

Do not paste commands into Run, Terminal, or PowerShell because a web page tells you to complete a CAPTCHA, fix an error, or verify your identity. Pause and verify the issue through a trusted route, such as the software vendor’s official support channel. Administrators can evaluate restricting or disabling the Run dialog as one way to reduce that execution path in managed settings, as Microsoft discusses in its ClickFix analysis. It is not a complete defense: lures can use other interfaces.

Microsoft’s 2025 Digital Defense Report attributed 47% of attacks in Microsoft Defender Expert notifications over the preceding year to ClickFix. That figure applies to those notifications, not to all cyberattacks globally; it is useful context, not an estimate of an individual user’s risk. See Microsoft’s 2025 Digital Defense Report.
