Choose a forex card by matching its supported currencies to your destination, then comparing the full cost of loading, spending and withdrawing cash—not just a headline markup. Also check how you can reload it abroad, handle a lost card, and reclaim unused money. Fees and features vary by issuer and card variant, so confirm the current terms and India-side requirements before loading.
Start with the currency you will spend
Check whether the exact card variant supports your destination currency as a separate wallet. A multi-currency card can be convenient on a trip through several countries, but the number of currencies it supports is less important than whether it supports the ones you need. ICICI says its card can hold up to 15 currencies, while RBL lists 18 for VoyEdge; these issuer-published counts do not establish which card is better, and currency lists can change. See the ICICI card FAQ and RBL VoyEdge details.

If a purchase is made in a currency that is not loaded, the issuer may convert from another wallet and charge a cross-currency fee. Ask which wallet will be debited and what conversion charge applies before choosing a card.

Compare the complete cost of using the card
Build a like-for-like comparison using the issuer’s current schedule and the exchange rate quoted when you load. A low or zero markup on one transaction type does not mean the card has no costs: issuance, reloads, currency conversion, wallet transfers and ATM withdrawals may be charged separately, and taxes may apply to fees.

- Getting and loading the card: Compare issuance, initial load and reload charges, plus the exchange-rate spread in the actual quote.
- Paying in shops or online: Check whether spending from the matching currency wallet is free and what happens when it is not.
- Moving money between wallets: Check whether the issuer charges a transfer fee.
- Withdrawing cash: Compare the issuer’s fee and daily limit for the currency you expect to withdraw.
- Taxes: Find out whether tax is added to particular fees and how the issuer applies it.
For illustration, ICICI’s published FAQ lists same-currency point-of-sale and online spending as free, cross-currency use at 3.5% plus GST, and a 2.5% wallet-to-wallet transfer charge. Its charge schedule lists ATM fee examples of USD 2, EUR 1.50 and GBP 1.50. HDFC’s posted ForexPlus table lists issuance fees of ₹300, ₹500 or ₹1,000 plus GST depending on variant, a ₹75 plus GST reload fee, ATM charges of USD 2 or USD 4 equivalent, and variant-specific cross-currency charges of 2%, 0% or 3%. These are issuer-published examples accessed on 7 October 2026, not a market-wide ranking; check the ICICI FAQ, ICICI charge schedule and HDFC ForexPlus terms for the current terms.
Do not compare percentages in isolation: issuers may define markup differently, taxes may be separate, and the quoted loading exchange rate affects what you receive for your money.
If you need cash, check both ATM costs
Compare the issuer’s withdrawal fee and the daily withdrawal limit for your expected currency. A local ATM operator may impose a separate surcharge on top of the card issuer’s fee; ICICI and RBL both flag this possibility. RBL’s page publishes currency-specific ATM charges and limits, so check the row for the currency you plan to withdraw rather than assuming one limit applies to every destination. See the RBL VoyEdge charges.

Before buying, verify the exact steps and restrictions for purchase, identity verification, initial loading and reloads. If you expect to need more funds during the trip, make sure the issuer’s app or online banking works for you abroad and understand processing time. ICICI says online reloads are available through Net Banking or iMobile, subject to processing; confirm the equivalent process with your chosen issuer.
Also check how to freeze or block the card, what support channels are available from abroad, and the replacement process and any charge. Save the issuer’s contact details somewhere separate from the card. ICICI advises cardholders to block a lost card promptly; consult the card FAQ for its instructions.

Decide what happens to unused balance
Compare the issuer’s refund or encashment process, charges and any conditions. Some issuers may allow unused funds to remain on the card for a later trip; others may offer a refund or encashment route. ICICI describes full or partial refund options, and RBL says unused funds may be retained or refunded/encashed. Confirm the current process and fees before purchasing, including what documents or steps a refund requires.
Choose local currency at the payment terminal
If a merchant or ATM asks whether to charge you in Indian rupees or the local currency, ICICI advises choosing local currency and declining dynamic currency conversion (DCC). Accepting DCC means the merchant or ATM operator handles the conversion and may add its own conversion charges. Choosing local currency avoids accepting that conversion, but it does not remove an issuer’s cross-currency fee if the transaction currency does not match a loaded wallet. See ICICI’s DCC guidance.

Forex card issuance and payment for travel are subject to KYC, anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorist-financing requirements, issuer limits and applicable Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) instructions. The Reserve Bank of India’s Master Direction on other remittance facilities covers the relevant conditions. Tax and LRS treatment can depend on the purpose of travel and cumulative remittances, so check the current official requirements and your issuer’s terms for your case rather than relying on an old comparison’s tax figure.
For charges payable in India on these instruments, an RBI circular dated 9 May 2023 states: “fees/charges payable in India have to be denominated and settled in Rupees only.” Read the RBI circular and the issuer’s current fee schedule before paying.
Make a final comparison before you apply
Use the same checklist for each card you are considering. Verify the exact variant, not just the provider’s brand name, and use a current load quote and fee schedule.
