Whether to buy is a separate question: NVIDIA reported exceptionally rapid growth in its latest located quarter, but that alone does not show that the shares are attractively priced or appropriate for your portfolio. This U.S.-oriented guide explains the purchase mechanics, what the latest reported figures do and do not tell you, and how NVDA compares with broader investment options. Availability, taxes, account terms, and investor protections vary by location and provider.
How do you buy NVIDIA stock?
A share of common stock represents an ownership interest in a company. To buy NVIDIA shares, you generally need an account or purchase route that can trade U.S.-listed stocks. The SEC’s Investor.gov describes options that may include a direct stock plan, a dividend reinvestment plan, a discount or full-service broker, or a stock fund, depending on availability. For many individual investors, a brokerage account is the practical route to placing an order for NVDA.

- Choose an eligible account or purchase route. Compare account availability, fees, terms, and the securities it permits you to trade. Check whether the account is cash-only or allows margin, which involves borrowing and can increase losses.
- Fund the account and find the security. Search for NVIDIA Corporation using the ticker NVDA, and verify the company and listing before proceeding. A ticker search result is not a recommendation to buy.
- Decide how many shares or how much money to invest. If the provider supports fractional shares, its rules may allow an investment smaller than the cost of a whole share; availability and terms vary. Decide on an amount consistent with your overall plan rather than letting a quoted share price determine how much risk to take.
- Choose an order type and review it before submitting. A market order seeks execution at the available market price, which can change before execution. A limit order sets the maximum price you will pay to buy, but it may not execute if the market does not reach that price. Neither order type guarantees a favorable outcome.
- Check the order status and account records. Confirm whether the order was filled, partially filled, left open, or canceled. Review the transaction details and any applicable fees or account charges.
Online access does not remove the need to research an investment, as the SEC’s online-investing guidance emphasizes. Account protections, costs, execution practices, and tax treatment depend on the provider and jurisdiction.
What do NVIDIA’s latest reported results show?
NVIDIA’s August 26, 2026 results release covered its fiscal second quarter of 2027, which ended July 26, 2026. The company reported $96.2 billion in revenue, up 106% year over year, including $89.0 billion in Data Center revenue, up 117%. It reported a 75.0% GAAP gross margin and GAAP diluted earnings per share of $2.46 for that quarter.

Those are historical, company-reported results, not a forecast of what shareholders will earn or proof that the same pace of growth will continue. CEO Jensen Huang characterized the opportunity in the release this way: “AI has reached its inflection point. It’s doing useful work. Its tokens are productive and profitable. Now, compute is revenue.” That is management’s view, not an independently established guarantee of future demand or investment returns.
Management’s outlook in that release called for Q3 FY2027 revenue of $108.0 billion, plus or minus 2%, and assumed no Data Center compute revenue from China. This is guidance, not realized revenue; actual results may differ.

Can you tell whether NVDA is worth buying now?
Not from revenue growth alone. The available figures do not establish a dated current share price, market capitalization, or valuation multiple, so they are not enough to call NVDA cheap or expensive now. A fast-growing company can still be a poor investment at a price that assumes more growth than it ultimately delivers; a slowing growth rate does not by itself prove that a share is overpriced either.

To assess valuation, pair a share price recorded on a specific date with a clearly identified earnings measure and period. For example, a price-to-earnings calculation using trailing GAAP earnings is not interchangeable with one based on adjusted earnings or analyst estimates for a future period. State the period and whether the earnings figure is GAAP, adjusted, or forward-looking; check that the numerator and earnings basis refer to compatible share counts and dates. Compare the result with the company’s prospects and risks, rather than treating any one multiple as a verdict.

NVIDIA announced on September 28, 2026 that it authorized an additional $150 billion in share repurchases, bringing its remaining authorization to $235 billion. It said it expects to execute the remaining program through fiscal 2028. An authorization permits repurchases; it does not promise a fixed purchase schedule, ensure that shares will be bought at a particular price, or set a floor under NVDA’s market price.
What risks could affect an investment in NVDA?
NVIDIA’s Q2 FY2027 Form 10-Q describes substantial commitments tied to supply, capacity, cloud services, and data-center capacity. These commitments can involve payments over multiple years. If demand, the company’s needs, or its plans diverge from expectations, some commitments may be difficult to reduce. The filing also discusses risks involving partners and customers, including their ability to meet commitments, obtain financing and infrastructure, complete projects on schedule and budget, and maintain financial health.

Growth also depends on data-center projects being built and supplied with what they need. NVIDIA identifies power constraints, government actions, permitting delays, and community opposition as factors that may delay or restrict development. More broadly, its disclosures identify global economic and political conditions; reliance on third parties to manufacture, assemble, package, and test products; competition and technology development; product or software defects; market acceptance; standards and interfaces; and changes in laws and regulations among factors that could cause actual results to differ.

For a shareholder, these business uncertainties translate into investment risk: the stock price can fall, and you can lose some or all of the money invested in the shares. Owning one company concentrates exposure in its performance and market expectations. Diversification can reduce some company-specific risk, but it cannot eliminate broad market risk or guarantee a gain.

What are the alternatives to buying individual NVDA shares?
Alternatives change the kind of exposure you take; they do not make investing risk-free. The SEC’s Investor.gov notes that stocks usually form one part of an investor’s holdings. A broad fund or a mix of asset classes may spread exposure across investments, while a narrow technology or semiconductor fund may still depend heavily on a small group of companies.
| Route | What you own or hold | Main exposure and trade-off | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual NVDA shares | Direct ownership interest in NVIDIA | Most direct exposure to NVIDIA’s results and company-specific risks; a single-company position is concentrated. | Portfolio concentration, your investment horizon, and whether the price and business risks fit your plan. |
| Broad stock mutual fund or ETF | A fund holding shares in multiple companies | Exposure is spread across holdings, which can lessen the effect of one company’s poor outcome; the fund can still lose value and may have concentrated top holdings. | Investment objective, current holdings and top positions, fees and expenses, liquidity, and (for an ETF) whether its market price is above or below net asset value. |
| Mixed allocation of stocks, bonds, and cash | A combination of asset classes, directly or through funds | Different asset classes have different risk and return characteristics; a mix may reduce reliance on stocks alone but cannot ensure a particular result. | How the allocation relates to your goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, and need for access to cash. |
Before choosing a fund, check its current prospectus and holdings rather than assuming its name tells you how diversified it is. A narrowly focused ETF is not automatically a diversified portfolio.
