How to Choose an Endpoint Detection and Response Solution for a Small Business

The right EDR for a small business depends on supported devices, who will handle alerts, the response service needed, and total licensing cost—not a single test score.

Choose an endpoint detection and response (EDR) solution by matching its device coverage and response workflow to the people who will manage it—not by picking the longest feature list or a single test score. First confirm it supports your computers and operating systems; then decide who will review alerts and act on them. If no one on your team can reliably do that, include managed detection and response (MDR) or another managed service in the comparison.

What EDR does—and what it does not

EDR software collects and centrally logs activity on endpoints such as computers, helping an organization identify suspicious behavior, investigate incidents, and respond. The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) says EDR telemetry can help identify incidents, including ones without previously known indicators. Common response functions include investigating activity across multiple computers and isolating a compromised device. See the ASD guidance for its discussion of EDR capabilities and implementation considerations.

EDR is focused on endpoints. Network detection and response (NDR) focuses on network traffic; extended detection and response (XDR) brings together signals from multiple security layers. Those labels describe scope, not a guarantee that one approach is better. A vendor-authored SentinelOne explainer outlines the terminology.

Start with the people and devices you need to protect

Inventory endpoints and operating systems

List the devices in scope: Windows and Mac computers, phones, servers, and any other endpoints that matter to the business. For each finalist, verify support for the specific operating system versions and the features available on each platform. Support for an OS does not necessarily mean every detection, investigation, or response feature works identically there.

Microsoft lists Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS among the platforms supported by Defender for Endpoint, but its plans and platform capabilities differ. Check the current plan and platform documentation before treating a listed OS as proof that a particular capability is included.

Name the alert owner

Decide who receives alerts, how often they are reviewed, who investigates them, who is authorized to isolate a device, and who is available outside business hours. An EDR tool cannot help reliably if alerts sit unread or responders do not know what action they are allowed to take.

If your business does not have that operational capacity, compare self-managed EDR with MDR or another managed response service. Ask the provider to specify monitoring hours, escalation times and paths, response authority, incident assistance, and what happens when your staff cannot be reached. These services vary by product and contract; the AV-Comparatives endpoint prevention and response feature list is one way to identify questions about MDR, incident response, response tools, and support.

Compare capabilities that change the day-to-day work

Detection and response

Ask a vendor to show a realistic alert from detection through investigation and containment. Find out what evidence an analyst sees, whether the product can isolate a device, which response actions can be automated, and which require approval or an additional license. Ask how an alert is distinguished from ordinary business activity; more telemetry is not automatically more useful if it overwhelms a small team with false positives.

ASD advises configuring EDR to balance malware identification against the user disruption and operational burden caused by false positives. Consider whether the product lets your team search activity across devices, understand why an alert fired, and document the response. Do not treat “AI-powered” or similar marketing language as evidence of better outcomes.

Fit with existing systems

Check compatibility with identity and email systems, device management, ticketing, backup, and any security operations tools you already use. Integrations can reduce context switching and make response easier, but a broad ecosystem or bundle is not by itself proof of stronger protection.

Microsoft documents integrations across its security ecosystem and a unified portal for Defender for Endpoint. That may be operationally relevant to an organization already centered on Microsoft services. Check the specific licensing and integration requirements for the setup you intend to use.

Deployment, support, and recovery

Estimate the effort to onboard devices, configure policies, maintain the deployment, and produce useful reports. Ask how support is reached, what response times apply, how a wrongly isolated device is restored, and how updates are managed. Check the vendor’s maturity, scalability, and support responsiveness—not just the product demonstration. Microsoft documents a pilot-and-deploy workflow for Defender for Endpoint; ASD also recommends assessing vendor support, integration, scalability, and data usefulness.

Microsoft Defender for Business and Defender for Endpoint

Microsoft positions Defender for Business for small and medium-sized businesses. It is available as a standalone product or through Microsoft 365 Business Premium, and Microsoft’s resources cover onboarding, setup, policy configuration, maintenance, and reporting. See Microsoft’s Defender for Business overview.

Defender for Endpoint has multiple licensing options, including Plan 1, Plan 2, and Defender for Business. The plans should not be assumed to have identical features; confirm the capabilities, server licensing, and entitlements that apply to your organization. Microsoft’s Defender for Endpoint overview describes supported operating systems, integrations, and a pilot workflow.

What independent test results can—and cannot—tell you

SE Labs’ June 2025 small-business endpoint protection report tested products including Sophos Intercept X, Microsoft Defender Antivirus (enterprise), Bitdefender Small Office Security, Kaspersky Small Office Security, and Webroot SecureAnywhere Endpoint Protection. In that test, SE Labs reported 100% protection accuracy for Sophos Intercept X and Kaspersky Small Office Security, and 99% for Microsoft Defender Antivirus (enterprise) and Bitdefender Small Office Security. Those results apply to the report’s tested samples and scenarios; they are not guarantees of future performance or scores for investigation tooling, managed response, or the full day-to-day EDR service. Review the report’s scope and date at SE Labs’ June 2025 report.

Compare the real licensing and service cost

Build an all-in recurring cost for the same device count and service scope across finalists. Include every device or user that needs protection, required add-ons, management or response services, and any contract terms that affect the total. Check existing licenses before buying overlapping entitlements. Microsoft says Defender for Business is available standalone or through Microsoft 365 Business Premium, but the available evidence does not establish comparable, current prices across vendors, geography-specific terms, or contract minimums. Request current quotes and verify the terms directly for your location.

Run a focused pilot before committing

  1. Record your environment. Count devices by operating system, identify business-critical systems and remote-work needs, and note current security licenses.
  2. Shortlist for fit. Eliminate options that do not support required platforms, match your self-managed or managed-response approach, or fit your alert-handling capacity.
  3. Request an end-to-end demonstration. Have each vendor walk through a realistic alert, investigation, containment, recovery, and reporting. Ask which actions need human approval or extra licensing.
  4. Test representative devices and workflows. Track false positives, workflow gaps, resource impact, support responsiveness, and the time needed for common response tasks.
  5. Review service and data terms in writing. Confirm data handling and retention, role permissions, contract scope, offboarding, monitoring hours, escalation, response authority, and incident assistance.
  6. Compare equivalent costs. Request current all-in pricing for the same device count, service hours, and response scope.

Keep the pilot representative of ordinary work as well as critical devices; a tool that disrupts routine business activity or cannot be operated by the assigned responders is a poor fit even if its feature list looks strong.
