To invert colors on an iPhone, go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size, then turn on Smart Invert or Classic Invert. Smart Invert generally leaves images and some dark-style content unchanged; Classic Invert reverses all onscreen colors. The same screen offers other display adjustments for color perception, brightness, transparency, and visual cues.
How to invert colors on iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility.
- Tap Display & Text Size.
- Turn on Smart Invert or Classic Invert.
You can return to this screen and switch the selected option off whenever you no longer want the inverted appearance. Apple describes these controls in its Change display colors on iPhone to make it easier to see what’s onscreen guide.

What is the difference between Smart Invert and Classic Invert?

Smart Invert is designed to darken backgrounds in apps and websites that do not support Dark Mode. The exact appearance can vary with the content and app.

Which other display accessibility setting should you try?
These controls address different visual preferences; they are not interchangeable with color inversion, and Apple does not identify one setting as best for everyone.

How do I make my iPhone screen less bright?
If bright colors are the issue, try Reduce White Point in Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size. It reduces the intensity of bright colors. It is a different adjustment from inverting colors: use inversion when you want colors reversed, and Reduce White Point when you want bright colors toned down.
Why might inversion look different or disappear?
- Night Shift: Apple says Night Shift automatically removes inverted-color and color-filter effects, except grayscale. If inversion appears to stop working while Night Shift is enabled, check that interaction. See Apple’s Use Night Shift on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch guide.
- True Tone: Some display accessibility settings, including Invert Colors, Grayscale, and Increase Contrast, might turn off True Tone, according to Apple’s Adjust the brightness and color temperature on your iPhone or iPad guide.
- Color Filters: Filters can alter the appearance of images and videos, so media may not look as expected when a filter is active.
How can I toggle inversion without opening Settings each time?
After choosing your preferred option, you can make Invert Colors or Color Filters available through Accessibility Shortcut or Control Center. Apple explains these quick-access options in its display and text size guide. Their availability can help when you only want the effect for a particular task.

Is Display Pulse Smoothing the same as color inversion?
No. Display Pulse Smoothing is a separate display option, not a requirement for inverting colors. Apple’s current iPhone guide lists it for iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. Apple also notes that disabling PWM may affect display performance at low brightness under some conditions. It is not listed as an option for every iPhone.
