In the Microsoft Intune admin center, open Devices > Monitor > Encryption report to check managed Windows and macOS devices. Read each result as a diagnostic snapshot: readiness, encryption status, profile state, and status details answer different questions, and the report may lag behind the device. For Windows, its encryption-status field describes the OS drive—not every fixed drive—and Microsoft says a status change can take up to 24 hours to appear.
Where is the Intune encryption report?
In the Intune admin center, go to Devices > Monitor > Encryption report. Microsoft also documents a Device encryption status view under Devices > Manage devices > Configuration > Monitor. Labels and navigation can change as the admin center evolves, so use the route visible in your tenant if it differs.

The report brings together managed-device encryption information, applicable profiles, status details, and available recovery-key actions. It is a useful management and troubleshooting view, but it is not a universal, instantaneous verdict on every drive or the device’s complete security posture.

Readiness is not the same as encryption status
Encryption readiness indicates whether the device is ready for the applicable encryption technology and policy. On Windows, Intune’s Ready designation requires an activated TPM. A Not ready result therefore does not, by itself, prove that encryption is impossible: another configuration or policy-permitted method may still allow encryption.

Encryption status is platform-specific
On Windows, the report’s encryption-status field reflects encryption of the OS drive. It does not establish whether other fixed drives are encrypted. On macOS, interpret the status in the context of FileVault, recovery-key escrow, device check-in, and any user action still required.
Profile summary may hide a mixed result
The profile-state summary shows the least favorable state among the applicable profiles. One profile in error can make the summary read Error even when other profiles succeeded. Open the device’s status details and inspect the individual applicable policies before concluding that all encryption configuration failed.
Status details point to the next check
Use the detail shown for the device to narrow the investigation. A profile error does not prove that the drive is unencrypted: a device can already be encrypted while still failing a policy requirement, protector check, or key-backup step.

Why can Windows show an error or not-ready result?
For BitLocker, distinguish a readiness prerequisite from a policy mismatch, a user-dependent step, or a reporting issue. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance identifies several possible causes; the status detail should guide which one to check rather than treating every error as the same failure.
- TPM or protector: Check whether a required TPM is present and ready and whether the required protector is configured.
- Windows Recovery Environment: Check whether WinRE is configured when the policy or encryption scenario requires it.
- User action: A standard encryption flow may need the user to consent to starting encryption. Determine whether that action is pending.
- Encryption method: Check for a mismatch between the method already used on the device and the one required by policy.
- Volume protection: Investigate an unprotected OS or fixed volume when the reported detail points to that condition. Remember that the report’s Windows encryption-status field itself refers to the OS drive.
- Recovery-key backup or connectivity: If the issue concerns key backup or network access, verify the relevant device connectivity and recovery-key reporting path.
Next, inspect the targeted BitLocker policy and the device’s actual configuration. Do not infer from a profile-level error alone that the OS drive is currently unencrypted.
Standard and silent BitLocker have different user workflows
Microsoft describes standard encryption as an approach that can involve user prompts. Silent encryption suppresses user interaction and is intended for deployments that should not depend on end-user action. Silent encryption has prerequisites: troubleshooting may involve TPM readiness, WinRE, disk layout, enrollment or join state, and administrative conditions. Check the policy’s intended scenario and the device-specific status details together; the report is most useful for BitLocker troubleshooting when a BitLocker policy is configured.

Why can macOS show a FileVault status that looks like a failure?
A missing recovery key may be a timing or check-in issue
If a recovery key has not yet been retrieved and stored, the Mac may be locked or may not have checked in. Microsoft notes that this state is not necessarily an error. Check the device’s check-in and key status before treating the missing key as proof that FileVault encryption failed.
Encryption can be waiting on the user
After receiving a FileVault request, macOS can wait for the user to log out before encryption proceeds. A status indicating deferral or encryption in progress can therefore describe a pending workflow rather than a permanent failure. On macOS Catalina (10.15) and later, the user may also need to approve the management profile for FileVault.
Pre-existing encryption needs careful handling
If a Mac was encrypted before Intune manages FileVault, the report may indicate that the user must decrypt it before Intune can set up FileVault. Microsoft documents another route: after receiving a FileVault enable policy, the user can upload their personal recovery key so Intune can then manage encryption. Manual decryption is possible, but it can leave the Mac unencrypted for a period; do not make it a routine first troubleshooting step without assessing that exposure and the available alternative.

How long does encryption status take to appear?
Microsoft Learn says it can take up to 24 hours for Intune to report a Windows device’s OS-drive encryption status or a change. That period can include time for encryption to complete and for the device to report back, so a recently changed status may not yet be visible.
For macOS, Microsoft says that after FileVault encryption completes, asking the user to sync can speed reporting rather than waiting for the next normal check-in. Treat a delayed status as a reporting-timing question until the device’s details indicate a separate configuration or encryption problem.
What should you compare between Windows and Mac results?
Do not assume that matching labels represent matching checks across platforms. Identify the operating system and encryption mechanism first, then compare what the report actually observes and what the workflow still needs.
Quick Recap
- Technology and readiness: Windows results concern BitLocker prerequisites such as TPM readiness; Mac results concern FileVault and its user or management-profile workflow.
- Drive scope: The Windows encryption-status field describes the OS drive, not every fixed drive.
- Policy state: A profile summary can reflect the least favorable applicable profile; inspect individual profiles and device details.
- User and key steps: BitLocker may involve consent or protector requirements. FileVault reporting can involve user deferral, profile approval, or recovery-key escrow.
- Reporting delay: Windows status can take up to 24 hours to appear; a Mac sync after encryption completes can help the report update before the next normal check-in.
