What is Apple Watch Series 9?
Apple Watch Series 9 is a smartwatch in Apple’s Watch lineup. Apple announced it on September 12, 2023, and said it would be available starting September 22, 2023. “Apple Watch 9” is a common shorthand; Series 9 is the product’s formal name. Apple’s launch announcement introduced its S9 SiP, Double Tap, brighter display, faster on-device Siri, and Precision Finding for iPhone.

What sizes and configurations were offered?
Apple’s technical specifications list two case sizes and two case materials. GPS and GPS + Cellular versions were available. These are the model’s listed configurations; they do not establish which finishes or configurations are currently for sale.

Weight depends on size, material, and connectivity. For example, Apple lists 31.9 g for the 41 mm aluminum GPS version and 38.7 g for the 45 mm aluminum GPS version. Apple’s Series 9 technical specifications provide configuration-specific details, including wrist-fit ranges.

What does Series 9 do?
Core hardware and display
Apple lists an S9 SiP with a 64-bit dual-core processor, a 4-core Neural Engine, and 64 GB capacity. The Always-On Retina LTPO OLED display is specified at up to 2,000 nits maximum brightness and 1 nit minimum brightness.
Gestures and Siri
Double Tap lets a wearer bring the thumb and index finger together on the watch hand to trigger common actions when the display is awake. Apple made the feature available on Series 9 with watchOS 10.1 on October 25, 2023. It is not supported in every app or situation: Apple lists exceptions including ECG, Heart Rate, Blood Oxygen, Sleep Focus, Maps during navigation, SOS features, and workouts during active sessions. Apple’s announcement of Double Tap availability describes the gesture and its limits.

Series 9 also supports on-device Siri. At launch, Apple highlighted faster Siri responses and the ability to access and log health data. It also listed Precision Finding for iPhone among the model’s features.
Health, activity, and safety sensors
Apple lists electrical and third-generation optical heart sensors, temperature sensing, a compass, an always-on altimeter, a high-g accelerometer, a high-dynamic-range gyroscope, and an ambient-light sensor. Temperature sensing is not intended for medical use. The watch includes health, activity, and safety functions, but feature availability can depend on country or region.

What should you know about availability and health features?
Not every Series 9 has every feature in every market. Apple’s U.S. specifications state that Blood Oxygen measurement is unavailable on Apple-sold U.S. units beginning January 18, 2024, and identify affected units by part numbers ending in LW/A. Apple also cautions that features and services can vary by country or region. Check the exact model and its regional feature availability rather than assuming all units are equivalent.
Apple stated 18 hours of battery life in its October 2023 Double Tap announcement. That is Apple’s stated figure, not an independent runtime test; actual battery life can vary with use.
