Use the Storefront API for product discovery and buyer cart actions; keep the Admin API on the server for merchant-authorized data and tasks. For checkout, guide the shopper into Shopify Checkout or use a checkout UI extension only for the tasks its target and declared capabilities support.
Choose where the voice assistant will live
The right integration depends on whether the store uses a standard Shopify Online Store theme or a custom storefront. In either case, keep the voice interface separate from the credentials and logic that authorize commerce operations.

| Storefront setup | Voice interface | Shopify connection | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Existing Online Store theme | Add a launcher and transcript interface through a theme or app extension. | Send voice requests to your app backend; have it perform validated Storefront API actions. | A voice feature added to an existing Shopify theme. |
| Headless or bespoke storefront | Build the voice experience into the custom frontend, such as a Hydrogen storefront or another frontend. | The browser or mobile client can call the Storefront API using the appropriate public-token model; route privileged work through the backend. | A store whose frontend is designed around custom interactions. |
Shopify describes a custom storefront as a frontend that replaces the Online Store while Shopify remains the commerce backend, including for browsing, cart activity, and checkout. See Shopify’s custom storefront overview.
Separate buyer actions from merchant-authorized operations
The voice agent should not receive broad Shopify credentials or decide on its own which data it can access. Treat recognized speech as an untrusted request: the client sends a normalized intent to your app, and the app checks the shop, customer context, requested action, and permissions before calling Shopify.

| API | Use it for | Trust boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Storefront API | Buyer-facing product, collection, search, cart, and checkout flows. | Use the appropriate Storefront API access model for the storefront; do not treat it as permission to expose private customer or merchant data. |
| GraphQL Admin API | Merchant-authorized operations such as reading or writing products, orders, customers, inventory, and metafields. | Call it from the backend using only the scopes the merchant granted. Never put Admin access tokens in browser code or voice prompts. |
Shopify identifies the GraphQL Admin API as the primary API for app access to merchant data and actions. The Storefront API is GraphQL-only and supports product and collection discovery, search, carts, and checkout. Shopify’s documentation shows a versioned endpoint format such as https://{store}.myshopify.com/api/2025-10/graphql.json; choose and manage an API version deliberately rather than assuming that example is the newest version.
Build the integration in practical steps
- Pick the storefront surface. For a theme store, add the launcher and transcript UI through a theme or app extension and have it call your backend. For a headless build, integrate voice into the frontend and use the appropriate Storefront API public-token model for buyer-facing requests.
- Create a Shopify app and authorize the merchant. Implement the app’s OAuth flow and request only the Admin API scopes required by the merchant tasks you actually support. Keep merchant access tokens on the server.
- Define a small set of commerce tools. Expose narrowly scoped backend operations such as product search, variant lookup, add-to-cart, and cart summary. Do not pass arbitrary model-generated GraphQL or Admin API calls through to Shopify.
- Map utterances to validated operations. Turn “find black running shoes under $100” into a product search with explicit color and price constraints. Turn “add size 9 to my cart” into a variant-selection step followed by a cart update only after the intended product and variant are clear.
- Return structured results to the dialogue manager. Include the product name, price, availability, and variant choices so the assistant can speak clearly and ask a follow-up question where the result is ambiguous. Do not make the voice model infer a variant or availability from a product title alone.
- Add customer and order tools only when needed. If the experience needs order history, addresses, or customer records, require sign-in or explicit verification before disclosing personal data. Keep those operations on an authenticated path with authorization checks for the specific customer and shop.
- Hand off to checkout. When the cart is ready, send the shopper to Shopify Checkout rather than trying to collect or manipulate payment details in a general storefront voice widget.
Design checkout around supported extension capabilities
A voice assistant can help a shopper find products and prepare a cart, but that does not mean it can control every part of checkout. Shopify’s checkout UI extensions expose APIs according to the extension’s target. Documented checkout APIs cover areas such as addresses, cart lines, costs, delivery options, discounts, and payment information; the available surface depends on the target and declared capabilities. Review Shopify’s checkout UI extension target APIs before designing a checkout feature.

Capabilities are declared in shopify.extension.toml. Shopify documents capabilities including api_access, network_access, block_progress, and buyer-consent collection. Extension calls may have Shopify-managed Storefront API authentication, but your backend still needs to verify requests. Check the capability documentation for requirements before implementing an extension. Do not assume a voice widget embedded in the storefront can directly manipulate payment fields.
Shopify’s Chat component is a separate, public real-time customer-support feature, not a general voice-shopping integration. Shopify documents it on Checkout and Thank you pages for Shopify Plus merchants, and on Thank you pages for other plans. See the Chat component documentation for its availability and scope.

For checkout customizations, use extension-based approaches rather than relying on script tags. Shopify documented script-tag sunset dates of August 28, 2025 for Plus checkout pages and August 26, 2026 for non-Plus checkout pages; both dates have passed as of October 3, 2026. Protect speech, customer data, and high-impact actions
Voice input can be misheard, replayed, or issued by the wrong person. Apply the same security discipline to a spoken request as to any other untrusted client input, with stronger controls when an action could expose personal information or change an order.

- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
- Verify extension-to-backend requests. Validate Shopify session tokens where applicable, and validate webhook signatures before acting on webhook payloads.
- Enforce authorization per shop and customer. Do not trust a shop identifier, customer identifier, or permission claim supplied only by the browser or voice model.
- Confirm consequential changes. Ask the shopper to confirm before placing an order, changing an address, or cancelling an order. For sensitive customer information, require sign-in or explicit verification before disclosure.
- Limit and monitor abuse. Rate-limit voice actions and log enough operational detail to investigate failures without retaining unnecessary personal information.
- Minimize transcript exposure. Redact sensitive transcript fields and set a deliberate retention policy for voice and transcript data. Avoid sending tokens or private customer details into prompts.
- Ask rather than guess. If speech recognition or the product match is uncertain, clarify the request instead of making an irreversible or costly change.
Test the full shopping conversation, not only API calls
A successful API response is not proof that a spoken shopping flow is safe or understandable. Test representative conversations from the first utterance through cart update and checkout handoff, including recovery paths.
- Similar product names, broad searches, and requests with several filters.
- Missing or conflicting variant details, such as a product with multiple sizes or colors.
- Unavailable products and variants, along with clear alternatives or a way to revise the search.
- Prices and availability in the shopper’s locale and currency.
- Cart recovery after an interrupted conversation, including checking that the assistant reports the current cart rather than assuming a previous update succeeded.
- Expired authentication, denied permissions, network failures, and Shopify API errors.
- A clear transition to visual checkout when speech is unsuitable for the next step.
Measure latency, interruption handling, recognition quality, multilingual behavior, and transcript retention in your own implementation. Shopify’s reviewed documentation does not publish general voice-commerce figures for conversion, accuracy, latency, or return on investment, so do not present a vendor or store-specific result as a Shopify-wide benchmark.

What to decide before launch
Settle the operational details that determine whether the feature will work reliably beyond a demo:
Quick Recap
- API versioning: choose the version your app targets, monitor Shopify’s versioned API documentation, and plan how your app will handle upgrades.
- Scopes and merchant consent: keep Admin API scopes limited to supported merchant tasks and make the authorization boundary understandable.
- Privacy and consent: decide what audio or transcript data is processed, retained, and redacted, and obtain any consent required for the experience you build.
- Fallback behavior: provide a visual route for editing a search, selecting a variant, reviewing the cart, or completing checkout when voice is unclear or unavailable.
- Operations: plan monitoring for failed requests, rate limits, authentication expiry, and per-conversation service costs. Those costs and any voice-vendor terms depend on the implementation; Shopify’s cited API documentation does not establish them.
