Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is Sony’s new, lighter AI upscaling option for the standard PS5. Sony says it improves image detail and stability, but its October 1, 2026 announcement publishes no independent comparisons, frame-rate results, or resolution figures—so the size of the improvement is not yet quantified. QSSR is available only in games whose developers add it; the first supported titles are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.
What QSSR does on PS5
QSSR stands for Quick Spectral Super Resolution. It uses AI to upscale a game’s image, aiming to make fine details clearer and reduce visual instability such as shimmering. Sony describes it as a new performance tier designed for the standard PS5, using a streamlined neural-network architecture and an implementation tuned for that console.

Sony’s announcement calls the improvements to image detail and stability “notable,” but that is a qualitative claim, not a measured result. It does not provide internal-resolution targets, pixel-count comparisons, frame-rate tables, latency measurements, or an independent image-quality test. The visible difference will depend on the game and its implementation.
QSSR versus PSSR on PS5 Pro
QSSR brings some of the benefits of AI upscaling to standard PS5 hardware; it is not presented as equivalent to PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on PS5 Pro. Sony says PSSR remains the “gold standard” on Pro. The distinction reflects the hardware target: Sony’s PS5 Pro launch description highlights its substantially stronger GPU and faster memory than the then-current PS5, while QSSR is specifically engineered as a more streamlined option for standard PS5.

| Comparison | QSSR | PSSR |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware target | Standard PS5 | PS5 Pro |
| Implementation | Streamlined neural-network architecture and hand-tuned for PS5 performance | Sony describes it as machine-learning AI upscaling; the cited materials do not give a directly comparable computational-cost figure |
| Image goal | Sony says it improves image detail and stability | Sony describes sharper image clarity and more detail |
| Relative position | Lower-cost tier for standard hardware; not claimed to match Pro | Sony calls it the “gold standard” on PS5 Pro |
| Game support | Requires game-level support, added through a title update | Used by supported PS5 Pro titles; Sony reported more than 50 titles had used PSSR by February 27, 2026 |
Sony’s earlier explanation says PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to upscale them. By February 27, 2026, Sony said more than 50 PS5 Pro titles had used PSSR. That figure is Sony’s count for PSSR on Pro, not a count of QSSR games.
How much difference does QSSR make?
So far, Sony’s published description establishes the intended benefits, not their exact size. Insomniac Games’ Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald said QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability to environments in Marvel’s Wolverine. Sucker Punch Productions Lead Rendering Engineer Jasmin Patry said it resolves fine detail in characters and environments with temporal stability not previously possible on PS5.

Those comments point to clearer fine detail and less distracting shimmer or instability, especially in detailed scenes. They do not establish that every supported game will look equally better, or that QSSR increases frame rate. Sony has not published frame-rate deltas or side-by-side measurements, so there is no reliable universal percentage or performance gain to quote.

Which PS5 games support QSSR?
At the October 1, 2026 announcement, the first games patched to add QSSR as an additional graphics option on standard PS5 were:
Rank #3
- 🚀 CPU: 3.5GHz, 8-core AMD Zen 2
- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
- Marvel’s Wolverine
- Ghost of Yōtei
QSSR is not a console-wide setting that automatically applies to every PS5 game. A developer must add support to a title, and the feature arrives through a game update. The announcement describes QSSR as an additional graphics option, so check the supported game’s graphics settings after installing its update.
Is QSSR available on the regular PS5?
Yes. Sony announced QSSR specifically for standard PS5, with the first two supported games receiving patches on October 1, 2026. It is a game-dependent feature rather than a universal system toggle; owning a standard PS5 alone does not enable QSSR in titles that have not added support.
