Wayland Has Won, but It Hasn’t Replaced Everything X11 Did

Wayland leads Linux desktop development, while Xwayland keeps many X11 applications running. The remaining differences matter most for window management, screen sharing, remote control, accessibility, and display workflows.

Wayland is now the main direction for major Linux desktops, but it has not made every X11 workflow obsolete. Xwayland keeps most legacy X11 applications running inside Wayland sessions; the gaps are more likely to affect window-management tools, screen capture and remote control, global input utilities, accessibility integrations, or specialized color workflows. Whether you can leave X11 behind depends on the desktop and distribution you use—and on the tools you rely on.

What “Wayland has won” means

Wayland is a replacement for the X11 display protocol and architecture, not a single server that all Linux desktops share. A Wayland server is a compositor: the desktop environment either supplies its own compositor or chooses one. GNOME and KDE have made Wayland their principal development path, so Wayland is the strategic default for mainstream desktop development.

KDE’s Plasma team has said that the future Plasma 6.8 release will be Wayland-exclusive. That is a statement about KDE’s direction, not evidence that every distribution, desktop, or user workflow has already dropped X11. Ubuntu 26.04 documentation, for example, still describes XWayland for running X.org applications in a Wayland session and optional X.org sessions for other desktops or compatibility needs.

Adoption figures need similar care: KDE developer David Edmundson reported about 76% Wayland adoption among the measured Plasma user base in 2026. That figure describes those Plasma users; it is not a census of Linux desktops overall.

How Wayland differs from X11

X11 gathered many display-server responsibilities in one architecture and supported shared conventions that let independent window managers, panels, pagers, and utilities cooperate. Wayland shifts more display and input policy to the compositor and uses separate protocols, toolkits, portals, and libraries for capabilities. This can give the compositor tighter control over which clients can observe or affect other clients, but it also means that features once treated as universal depend on support from the relevant desktop stack.

Area X11 Wayland
Display and input policy Central X server with established conventions used by other desktop components. Handled primarily by the compositor, with capabilities provided through protocols and desktop components.
Legacy X11 applications Run against an X server. Usually run through Xwayland, an X11 server operating as a Wayland client.
Window-management ecosystem Independent window managers and related tools can use X11 conventions such as ICCCM and EWMH. Window management belongs to the compositor; X11 window managers cannot manage native Wayland windows.
Screen capture and control Older tools may rely on the X11 model of access. Capture and control depend on compositor, portal, and desktop support.
Utilities and scripts Tools such as xrandr can address X11 server state. X11 utilities do not automatically configure the Wayland compositor; use the desktop’s supported controls or relevant protocol-aware tools.

What Xwayland preserves—and what it doesn’t

Xwayland is not merely a translator that turns every X11 assumption into a native Wayland feature. It is a real X11 server running as a Wayland client. In rootless mode, its application windows can appear alongside native Wayland windows, with the Wayland compositor still managing the overall desktop. The Wayland Project FAQ describes this as giving legacy clients “a real and compliant X11 platform to run on” beside native clients.

The Wayland Project’s X11 application support documentation cautions that “Xwayland compatibility compared to a native X server will probably never reach 100%.” Some X11 applications may therefore work well while a tool that expects to control the whole desktop does not. X11 window managers are “practically never supported” in this arrangement: they cannot manage native Wayland windows, whose management belongs to the compositor.

Which X11-era workflows need the closest check

Window managers, panels, and desktop utilities

If your setup depends on an independent X11 window manager, pager, panel, or script communicating through ICCCM/EWMH conventions, expect to use a compositor or desktop-specific alternative in Wayland. That is an architectural difference, not simply a matter of whether an old application launches through Xwayland.

Screen sharing and remote desktop

Wayland routes capture and control through compositor and portal protocols rather than assuming that any client can inspect the whole desktop. KDE’s current issue page lists remote-desktop problems among significant Wayland-specific issues. Before switching, check the exact RDP, VNC, conferencing, or support application you use, and verify both screen capture and remote input on your compositor and distribution release.

Accessibility and global input tools

Applications that need to observe or inject input globally cannot assume the X11 access model. Their support depends on the compositor, portal, and accessibility implementation. This does not mean accessibility is universally missing on Wayland; it means a particular screen reader, macro tool, automation script, or assistive workflow needs to be checked in the desktop where you plan to use it.

Color management, HDR, and displays

Wayland’s color-management approach is display-oriented and protocol-based. The official Wayland color-management documentation describes color management in relation to displays and images as display-referred. In practice, the result depends on application and compositor support, so the presence of a Wayland session alone does not establish that a specific color-managed or HDR workflow is covered.

Multi-monitor, scaling, and old scripts

Wayland moves display configuration into the desktop or compositor rather than making X11 utilities such as xrandr universal controls. A script that expects to change outputs through a global X server may need to be replaced with a desktop-specific interface or a tool that speaks the relevant Wayland protocol. Check your actual monitor, scaling, and automation setup rather than assuming an X11 command has a direct equivalent everywhere.

How to decide whether to use Wayland or keep X11

For a current GNOME or KDE desktop, start by trying Wayland: it is the primary development path, and Xwayland is designed to keep legacy X11 applications available. Keep an X11 session available if a required workflow depends on an X11 window manager, global input injection, older screen-capture or remote-control software, or an application that behaves incorrectly under Xwayland.

  1. List must-work tasks. Include every application, screen-sharing service, remote-administration tool, accessibility feature, input macro, monitor configuration, and color workflow you depend on.
  2. Check the desktop and release. Confirm what your distribution offers for the particular desktop environment and version. Availability of an X11 session varies; Ubuntu 26.04 documents optional X.org sessions, but that should not be generalized to every distribution.
  3. Test the Wayland session directly. Launch X11 applications through Xwayland and test the complete workflow—not just whether the window opens. Try the capture, remote input, shortcut, or display behavior that matters to you.
  4. Keep a fallback when a requirement fails. If the distribution still provides an X11 session and a critical workflow does not work acceptably under Wayland, use that session for now. Recheck after relevant compositor or distribution updates because support is changing.

Bottom line: the migration is real, but the compatibility boundary matters

Wayland has won as the strategic direction of mainstream Linux desktops; that does not mean it reproduces every X11 convention or utility. Xwayland makes the transition practical for many applications, while workflows that need system-wide window control, capture, input access, or specialized desktop behavior remain the key reasons to test carefully or retain an X11 session.
