To protect a valuable collectible figure, document its identity and value, confirm in writing how your home or renters policy treats it, and compare any endorsement with specialist cover. For display, reduce theft and accidental damage with a stable, secure case, keep the figure out of direct sunlight, and avoid changing its environment based on a universal temperature or humidity target: the right conditions depend on its materials and condition.
Build a record of the figure before you insure it
A clear inventory makes it easier to discuss coverage and support a claim. Record the maker, line or edition, model or edition identifiers, purchase date and price, provenance where relevant, condition, and included accessories. Photograph the figure from multiple angles and keep original receipts, sales records, and other evidence of value.

Ask the insurer whether it requires a formal appraisal, which appraiser qualifications it accepts, how recent the appraisal must be, and when it expects values to be updated. Requirements vary by provider and product: Liberty Mutual’s 2026 consumer guidance says an appraisal is usually completed within the last five years for valuables, while Chubb US’s collections page, accessed in 2026 says appraisals are required for individual collectibles valued at $100,000 or more under its described offering. Neither is a universal rule.

Start with the insurer that holds your home or renters policy. Ask whether a collectible figure falls within a covered valuables category, what limit applies, and whether the limit is a sublimit shared with other items. Liberty Mutual explains that standard homeowners coverage for valuables is typically subject to a set sublimit; high-value items may need a scheduled endorsement or separate policy. Check your own declarations and endorsements rather than assuming the figure’s full value is covered.

Request the relevant policy wording, endorsement, or proposed quote. A provider’s overview describes an offering, but only the applicable contract establishes your coverage. If the existing limit or terms are inadequate, compare a scheduled endorsement with specialist collectibles or fine-art cover. The products described by Chubb UK and Chubb US illustrate that coverage can be tailored to collections, but availability, eligibility, geography, and wording differ.
Compare policy terms that affect a collectible figure
Do not rely on labels such as “all risks” without checking the exclusions and conditions. Compare the contract on the points that determine what happens if a figure is damaged, lost, or stolen:

- Where it is covered: Ask whether cover applies while the figure is displayed, stored, or in transit, and in which territories.
- How a loss is valued: Ask whether a total loss is settled on agreed value, replacement value, or fair market value, and how the stated value is established or updated.
- Partial damage: Check how repair costs are handled and whether a reduction in value after repair is covered. Aon’s fine-art practice identifies replacement value versus fair market value and loss of value after partial damage as questions collectors should raise.
- Limits and your share of a claim: Confirm item limits, collection limits, sublimits, deductibles or excesses, and any special conditions for display or transit.
- Exclusions and duties: Read the wording for gradual deterioration and losses connected with humidity, light, or temperature. Arch’s product summary describes physical loss or damage subject to bespoke limits and excesses, while listing gradual deterioration and some losses associated with environmental conditions among exclusions unless a specified cause applies. That distributor-facing summary is not a policy quote and does not describe other insurers’ contracts.
If a term is unclear, ask a licensed insurer or broker in your jurisdiction to explain how it applies to your figure. Collections Trust also identifies valuation, security, conservation, and insurance advice as parts of insurance planning in its Spectrum guidance.

Display the figure to reduce theft, impact, and light exposure
Choose a stable, secure position
Use a secure case or secure attachment to deter theft and vandalism and reduce the chance of a bump or fall. Control light, not just ultraviolet
The Library of Congress Collections Care guidance says, “Generally, sunlight is avoided for display of light-sensitive items as it is too intense, contains high levels of UV, and is difficult to control.” If ultraviolet light from a source cannot be eliminated, UV-absorbing glazing can reduce that part of exposure. It does not make prolonged bright display harmless: visible light can also contribute to damage, so manage both intensity and duration. Check a case’s glazing specification rather than assuming that a product described as UV-protective provides a particular level of protection.
A secure case can help with physical security, but it does not make the display risk-free. The Library of Congress recommends monitoring temperature and relative humidity in a case and its surroundings as appropriate to the collection materials. Its collections-care guidance also calls for chemically inert case construction and trimming materials, and references Oddy testing or the photographic activity test (PAT), ISO 18916. A generic retail case should not be assumed to have been tested to those museum criteria.

Let the figure’s materials and condition guide environmental care
There is no well-supported single household temperature or relative-humidity target for every collectible figure. The Department of the Interior’s museum directive says acceptable conditions depend on local climate, collection materials and condition, acclimatization, and building capabilities; it is museum-wide guidance, not a figure-specific household prescription. Keep conditions stable rather than making abrupt changes, and seek advice from a conservator familiar with plastics and mixed-media objects if the figure includes sensitive or mixed materials.
Consult a conservator before changing the environment or attempting to clean a figure with unstable paint, soft plastics, paper inserts, fabric, adhesives, or signs such as tackiness, cracking, fading, corrosion, or an unusual odor. The cited collections-care guidance does not provide figure-specific cleaning instructions.
