Try that before cutting the package: an intact tube keeps the formula better protected. If you do open it, transfer the remainder with clean tools to a clean container and use it promptly.
Start by pressing or rolling the intact tube
- Flatten the sealed end. Smooth the tube from its closed end toward the cap to push product toward the opening.
- Roll it toward the cap. Fold or roll the emptied section forward as you dispense. A tube key can make this easier and keep the tube rolled.
- Keep using the tool as the tube empties. UpCircle recommends starting with a squeezer before the tube feels empty. This approach works best for flexible tubes; it may not clear every bit of residue near the sealed end.
For an aluminum moisturizer tube, Dieux’s directions are to flatten the top, slide its Squeeze Key onto the tube, then roll the key down as needed. That is a product-specific example, not a guarantee that every key fits every tube. Check a tool’s slot size and stated compatibility before using it. Addition Studio, for example, describes its zinc-alloy squeezer as designed for its 15 ml and 100 ml tubes and compatible with most other cosmetic tubes.

Choose a method that suits the tube

Open the tube only as a last resort
Cutting the tube can expose product that squeezing cannot reach, but it also exposes the formula to the environment. Skincare.com’s 2020 article, which summarizes advice from board-certified dermatologist Nava Greenfield, M.D., cautions against opening a tube unless you intend to use the remainder; the article notes that packaging helps keep out bacteria and mold.
- Use clean scissors and handle the cut edge carefully to avoid a sharp or jagged edge.
- Transfer what you need with a clean spatula or other clean implement into a clean container rather than repeatedly reaching into the cut tube.
- Use the transferred product promptly. UpCircle’s guidance dated March 9, 2026, says to use it within a few days; this is that brand’s advice, not a universal shelf-life standard for every formula.
There is no single safe-use window established here for all opened products. Formulas, preservatives, storage conditions, and packaging differ, so do not treat a few days as a general guarantee.

Do not add water to retrieve the remainder
Do not dilute skincare with water to thin it or coax it out. Skincare.com’s article warns that adding water changes the product’s composition and how it works. Use the product as packaged instead.

Hand rolling, tube keys, and opening-and-transferring advice apply to flexible tubes such as many moisturizer or cleanser packages. They should not be assumed to apply to airless pumps, sealed ampoules, or every medicated product; follow the product’s own package instructions where applicable.
