A $27,000 video-game collectible should be treated as a scheduled, documented asset—not as an ordinary item covered by a standard homeowners sublimit. Before displaying it, establish authenticity and provenance, obtain a current valuation accepted by the insurer, and put the item on a policy that states how a loss will be settled. Use a lockable, UV-filtering case made from conservation-safe materials, keep temperature and relative humidity stable, and maintain an off-site copy of every record.
Why a $27,000 game needs special insurance
Many homeowners and renters policies cover personal property, but valuable collectibles often have category sublimits and may settle a claim at actual cash value. Actual cash value can be very different from the current collector-market value of a rare game. A $27,000 item can therefore be underinsured even when the policy technically includes collectibles.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Collectibles Insurance Services states that individual video-game items or sets insured for $25,000 or more must be scheduled. A $27,000 game crosses that threshold. Scheduling identifies the item and its value in the policy rather than leaving it inside a broad, capped category.
Do not assume that a policy’s general “personal property” limit, replacement-cost language, or a recently paid purchase price will produce a $27,000 settlement. Ask the insurer to explain the valuation method and obtain the answer in writing on the quote, endorsement, or declarations page.

Choose the insurance structure
Specialist collectibles policy
A specialist policy is a logical first quote for a high-value game because specialist programs may be built for collector-market values and can include risks that ordinary home policies restrict. Collectibles Insurance Services describes coverage for video games, transit, and exhibition, and requires scheduling at the $25,000 level. Availability, underwriting, territory, deductibles, and exclusions still depend on your location and the specific item.
Scheduled personal-property endorsement
An endorsement can add one collectible to a homeowners or renters policy with its own description and limit. Liberty Mutual describes scheduling as a common way to insure valuable collectibles beyond standard sublimits and recommends a professional appraisal and detailed inventory. Amica says scheduled property may be covered up to the full appraised value and may require an appraisal, receipt, or certificate. These are descriptions of insurer practices, not a guarantee that every policy uses the same terms.
Standalone collections policy
A standalone collections policy may offer blanket coverage for a collection or scheduled coverage for individual pieces. Chubb describes options that can include agreed-value settlement and worldwide coverage, with valuation procedures that vary by item. Read the actual wording and declarations page: a brochure or quote summary is not the contract.
Compare the terms that change your recovery
| Question | Why it matters | What to obtain in writing |
|---|---|---|
| Valuation basis | Determines the amount used after a loss. | Agreed value, market value, replacement cost, or actual cash value; identify any depreciation. |
| Covered causes | A policy can cover theft but exclude accidental damage, or cover home losses but not transit. | Specific wording for theft, accidental breakage, flood, transit, exhibition, off-site storage, and mysterious disappearance. |
| Deductible | Reduces the payment you receive and may apply differently to scheduled property. | Dollar amount or percentage, and whether it applies per occurrence or per item. |
| Scheduling and appraisal | A failure to list the item or meet an appraisal rule can create a coverage dispute. | Required description, appraisal format, recency requirement, and documentation deadline. |
| Geographic limits | Moving, lending, shipping, or exhibiting the game can take it outside the normal territory. | Home address, storage locations, worldwide or domestic transit terms, and exhibition conditions. |
| Value changes | Rare-game prices can change faster than an annual policy review. | Inflation guard, automatic appreciation, reporting requirements, and the process for increasing the limit. |
| Security conditions | Locks, alarms, safes, or transport rules may be required for theft coverage. | Required protections and the consequences of not using them. |
Build the claim file before displaying the item
Insurers evaluate what was owned, its condition, its authenticity, and its value. Create the file before installation or transport, then update it after any professional appraisal.

- Photograph every surface. Take high-resolution images of the front, back, sides, top, bottom, packaging, seals, labels, serial numbers, edition marks, inserts, and accessories. Include close-ups of defects and a date reference such as a dated card or camera metadata. Keep the original files.
- Record identifying details. Write down the title, platform, region, publisher, release or edition information, serial numbers, variant identifiers, and whether components are factory-sealed, complete-in-box, or loose.
- Preserve ownership evidence. Save the purchase receipt, auction record, seller correspondence, payment record, certificate of authenticity, and any chain-of-ownership documents. Keep the seller’s description and photographs when they establish provenance.
- Write a condition report. Describe seals, label alignment, fading, scratches, cracks, missing parts, restoration, and packaging wear. Pair each statement with a photograph. Do not clean, open, repair, modify, or re-seal a rare item before asking the insurer or a qualified conservator.
- Obtain an acceptable valuation. Ask the insurer whether it requires a formal appraisal, who may perform it, what qualifications are accepted, and how recent the report must be. A receipt can prove what you paid but may not establish today’s collector value.
- Submit and schedule it. Give the insurer the exact description, value, appraisal, photographs, and storage or display details. Confirm that the item appears by name or unique identifier on the endorsement or schedule.
- Back up the file away from home. Keep an encrypted cloud copy or a duplicate drive at another location. Include the policy, endorsement, appraisal, inventory, receipts, and photographs so a fire or theft cannot remove the evidence and the item together.
Know what “value” means at claim time
Agreed value
An agreed-value clause sets the amount or valuation method in advance, subject to the policy’s conditions. It can reduce arguments over a volatile market, but you must verify whether the amount is fixed, whether a deductible is subtracted, and whether the insurer can require a new appraisal.
Market or replacement value
Market-value language may refer to the price of a comparable collectible at the relevant time. Replacement-cost language may instead focus on obtaining a comparable item. Ask how the insurer handles a unique edition for which no identical replacement is available, and whether buyer’s premiums, shipping, taxes, or authentication costs are included.
Actual cash value
Actual cash value generally reflects depreciation or another adjustment rather than the full collector-market amount. Collectibles Insurance Services notes that ordinary homeowners coverage is typically based on actual cash value rather than current market or full collector value. That distinction is why a scheduled or specialist arrangement is important for this item.

Case and glazing
- Use a lockable case or a frame securely attached to the wall. The Library of Congress advises placing displayed items in a secure exhibition case or attaching them securely to the wall to prevent theft and vandalism.
- Choose UV-filtering glazing and verify the stated UV-transmission or filtration percentage. “Acrylic” or “museum” on a product label alone does not establish performance.
- Use chemically inert, conservation-appropriate materials for shelves, mounts, foam, gaskets, adhesives, and fabrics. Materials that off-gas can discolor plastics, labels, and paper.
- Leave clearance between the collectible and the glazing so vibration, thermal expansion, or a loose component cannot cause contact.
- Anchor the case to structural material, use a quality lock, and consider tamper alarms or a camera when the value or location warrants it.
Placement
- Keep the case away from direct sunlight, skylights, radiators, fireplaces, kitchen steam, bathrooms, HVAC discharge, and exterior walls with condensation risk.
- Keep it above floor level and away from likely flood paths, pipes, pets, children, insects, and rodents.
- Do not use an unregulated attic, garage, shed, or basement as the primary storage location.
- Use low-heat lighting outside the case or filtered lighting on a timer. Heat from lamps can create a damaging local microclimate.
Control temperature, humidity, light, and pollutants
The National Archives and Records Administration recommends a stable home environment of 55–70°F and 30–55% relative humidity for video materials, with as little fluctuation as possible. A temperature and relative-humidity data logger inside or immediately beside the case can reveal daily swings that a single spot reading misses.
| Risk | Control | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Heat | Keep within the 55–70°F home range; move the case away from heat sources and sun. | Warm glazing, softening plastics, warped packaging, or a logger showing repeated peaks. |
| High humidity | Maintain 30–55% RH; use building HVAC or a properly sized dehumidifier rather than placing desiccant inside a sealed case without monitoring. | Condensation, tacky labels, mold odor, or RH above the target for extended periods. |
| Low humidity | Avoid prolonged dryness and rapid cycling; humidify the room only with equipment that can be monitored. | Brittle paper, curling inserts, static, or RH below the target. |
| Ultraviolet and visible light | Use UV-filtering glazing, block sunlight, lower illumination, and turn lights off when nobody is viewing the item. | Fading, yellowing, or uneven color on labels, manuals, or packaging. |
| Pollutants | Use inert materials, filtration, and a well-sealed case where practical; keep away from cooking fumes, smoke, solvents, and fresh paint. | Odor, surface film, discoloration, or corrosion on metal parts. |
For paper manuals, maps, certificates, and packaging, the Canadian Conservation Institute recommends archival-quality enclosures, reduced light exposure, and UV-filtering glazing where appropriate. Sensitive colorants can fade even at low museum light levels, so rotate paper components off display when feasible. A Western Australian Museum conservation summary gives 50 lux as a maximum for sensitive paper and 45–55% RH with 15–25°C as contextual museum guidance; confirm that those limits fit the specific materials and display duration rather than treating them as a universal home rule.
National Archives exhibition guidance also emphasizes pollutant filtration or sealed enclosures, UV filters, and added alarms, cameras, or guards for high-security objects. Department of the Interior museum standards call for monitoring and control of temperature and RH, minimizing significant fluctuations, controlling visible light and UV, using structurally sound museum-quality mounts, and following security procedures.

Separate display components from archival storage
Displaying the entire package continuously maximizes exposure. Keep manuals, inserts, certificates, maps, spare parts, and alternate packaging in acid-free boxes or inert sleeves when they are not being shown. Store them flat or in the orientation recommended for their material, with enough room to avoid crushing or abrasion.

Use clean hands or suitable gloves according to the material and conservator advice; avoid forcing folded paper flat or placing pressure on brittle plastics. Label each enclosure with a non-adhesive, reversible identifier so the component can be matched to the inventory without writing on the original.
Rotate paper elements on a planned schedule. Record the date each component went on display and off display, then photograph its condition after rotation. If a component shows fading, odor, mold, adhesive failure, or distortion, isolate it and consult a conservator before further handling.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Install and monitor the case step by step
- Survey the room. Identify windows, sunlight paths, radiators, vents, plumbing, exterior walls, floor-level flood risks, and nearby cooking or smoking sources.
- Select the case. Confirm lock quality, UV performance, inert materials, structural strength, ventilation or sealing design, and clearance around the item.
- Secure the case. Fasten it to a stud, masonry, or another structural anchor. Test that doors cannot be lifted from their hinges and that the lock remains accessible to authorized people.
- Prepare the support. Use a stable, padded, inert mount that supports the collectible without adhesives, pressure, or contact with glazing.
- Install monitoring. Place a calibrated temperature/RH logger where it represents the object’s microclimate. Set alerts for sustained excursions rather than reacting to a single brief reading.
- Set lighting. Use low-heat, UV-filtered illumination outside the case and a timer. Keep lights off when the room is unoccupied.
- Document the installation. Photograph the closed case, lock, anchors, mount, logger location, and final object position. Add these images to the inventory.
- Review the data. Check the logger weekly at first, then at an interval appropriate to the room’s stability. Investigate trends, not just daily averages.
Display versus archival storage: make the decision deliberately
| Option | Advantages | Risks and controls |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous display | Immediate visibility and enjoyment. | Highest cumulative light and environmental exposure; use UV glazing, timers, monitoring, and periodic inspection. |
| Rotating display | Preserves paper and color while still allowing viewing. | Handling and transport introduce risk; photograph condition before and after each rotation. |
| Archival storage with occasional viewing | Lowest light exposure and easier environmental control. | Less visible; storage must still be secure, dry, elevated, and inventoried. |
For a complete-in-box item with sensitive paper, rotating the original components while displaying a high-quality reproduction of artwork can reduce exposure, provided the reproduction is clearly kept separate from the insured original. Never alter the collectible or replace a component without recording the change and checking policy requirements.
What to do when moving, lending, or exhibiting it
Contact the insurer before shipping, transporting, lending, or displaying the game at an event. Confirm whether transit and exhibition are covered, who is responsible while the item is in another person’s custody, whether a professional shipper is required, and whether the geographic limit changes outside the home.
