The safest sequence is to start from a stopped, backed-up vanilla server, verify Banov by itself, and then add other mods one at a time. The map and mission are updated separately, so preserve your XML customizations and check Banov compatibility whenever DayZ receives a major patch.

What a Banov installation actually contains
Banov is not installed by copying a single file. A working server deployment has a Workshop map package, a mission directory, a signature key, and matching configuration entries. The client also needs the same Workshop map content before it can join.

The map package and mission package must match. A server can have the mod present but still start on another world if its mission template points elsewhere. Conversely, a correctly named mission folder cannot provide the map if @Banov is absent from the launch line.

Before you begin
Stop the server and make a recoverable backup
Stop the DayZ process before copying files or editing configuration. Back up the current server installation, serverDZ.cfg, the active mission directory, and any custom XML files. Include at least types.xml and events.xml; administrators often also modify other economy, spawn, or environment files. A backup lets you restore a known-good state if a mission update overwrites a change or a malformed XML file prevents startup.
Confirm the dedicated-server installation
Use the DayZ dedicated-server application, whose stable app ID is 223350, as the installation target. The client application uses app ID 221100 and is where Workshop content is normally acquired for play. Confusing the two can result in downloading or updating the client instead of the server files.
Prepare access to the complete file tree
Manual installation requires access to the server’s mod directory, keys directory, mission directory, launch command or service settings, and configuration files. On a rented server, those locations may be exposed through a control panel or file manager rather than a local disk. Do not assume that a panel’s “install map” button also preserves your custom mission edits; verify what it changes before applying an update.
Manual installation: step by step
1. Stop the server and record the current state
- Stop the DayZ server cleanly through your service manager, startup script, or hosting panel.
- Copy the existing mission folder and
serverDZ.cfgto a separate backup location. - Record the current launch parameters and loaded mods so you can remove only the changes related to Banov if troubleshooting is required.
Starting with a clean, stopped state prevents files from being locked or partially written while you install the map.
2. Obtain the Banov Workshop package and matching mission files
Subscribe to or download Banov through the DayZ Steam Workshop, then obtain the mission files supplied for Banov. The installation guide for Banov treats these as separate downloads: the Workshop content supplies the mod, while the mission archive must be extracted into a folder named empty.banov.
Use the mission files intended for the same Banov release as the Workshop package. Do not rename the folder to a personal label such as BanovMission; the configuration value and the directory name must agree exactly, including capitalization.
3. Copy the Workshop mod to the server
Copy the complete Banov Workshop directory into the dedicated server’s mod location. The directory is commonly named @Banov. Keep the mod’s internal structure intact; do not copy only a subfolder such as Addons unless the provider’s documented layout explicitly requires that arrangement.

If your server already uses a launch line with several mods, preserve the existing separator and ordering syntax. The important requirement is that the Banov directory named in the launch parameter is the one you actually copied to the server.
4. Install the signature key
Open the Banov mod’s keys folder and copy BANOV.bikey into the dedicated server’s top-level keys directory. The server uses this key during signature verification. Leaving the key inside @Banov or putting it in the client’s keys directory does not satisfy the server’s check.
Keep the spelling and extension unchanged. If the server reports a missing key or signature failure after this step, check that the file exists in the server’s active keys directory and that the client is using the matching Banov Workshop build.

Extract the supplied mission archive so the final path ends in a directory named exactly empty.banov. Place that directory under the server’s mission root. The result should look conceptually like:
missions/empty.banov/
The exact parent directory can vary by server installation, but the final folder name must match the mission template. Check that the XML files and other mission content are directly inside empty.banov or its expected subdirectories, rather than accidentally nested under a second folder created by the archive extractor.
6. Select Banov in serverDZ.cfg
Open the active serverDZ.cfg and locate the mission or template setting. Set the mission block to:
template="empty.banov"
Preserve the surrounding syntax used by your existing configuration. If the file has separate entries for different platforms or difficulty settings, edit the template that the server actually reads. A correctly installed map will still not load if the server continues to point at dayzOffline.chernarusplus or another previous mission.

7. Add Banov to the launch mod parameter
Add @Banov to the server’s mod parameter, commonly the -mod value in a startup script, service definition, or panel field. Keep the same delimiter style as the other mods already loaded. For example, if your existing launch configuration separates mod directories with semicolons, add Banov using that same convention rather than introducing a new separator.
Do not put @Banov in the mission template setting, and do not rely on the mission folder alone. The template selects the mission; the launch parameter loads the map mod.
8. Start once and read the logs
Start the server with Banov as the only non-vanilla gameplay addition. Watch the startup output and server logs for four broad classes of errors:
- Missing mission or incorrect template errors, which point to the folder name or
serverDZ.cfg. - Signature and key errors, which point to
BANOV.bikeyplacement or mismatched client/server content. - XML parsing errors, which identify a malformed mission file or an incompatible edit.
- Mod-loading or dependency errors, which indicate an incorrect launch path or a conflict with another mod.
There is no single universal log path for every host and installation. Use the log location exposed by your service or provider, and diagnose the exact error text instead of applying a generic fix.

Install or update the Banov Workshop content on the client before connecting. Once connected, verify that the player spawns in Banov, the map loads without missing assets, loot appears, and a restart preserves character and world persistence. Test these basics before adding traders, vehicles, economy packs, or other gameplay modifications.
Installing Banov through a hosting panel
Managed hosts often provide a map installer that performs the file and configuration work for you. The documented workflow from GTXGaming is:
- Stop the server.
- Open the panel’s Mod Manager.
- Find Banov in the Community Maps section and install it.
- Start the server and monitor its startup output.
GamingDeluxe describes the same stop, install, and start pattern and recommends beginning with a fresh or vanilla setup before adding other mods. Panel labels, directory layouts, and update behavior are provider-specific, so follow the current instructions shown by your host. Confirm that the panel has set the mission template to empty.banov, loaded the Banov mod, and installed the key rather than assuming all three actions occurred.

If you have edited mission XML files, download or copy them before using the panel’s update function. Some panels replace the active mission directory, while others create a second directory for review. GTXGaming documents a pattern in which an update can create an empty.Banov_UPDATED folder; administrators can then compare or merge XML changes before switching the active mission. The capitalization shown by the panel may differ from your existing directory, so verify the exact path and template value.
How to verify a clean Banov deployment
Use this checklist after the first successful start:
- The server starts without a missing-template or missing-directory error.
- The active mission directory is named
empty.banovand is located under the server’s mission root. serverDZ.cfgcontainstemplate="empty.banov".- The launch parameters contain
@Banovusing the same separator convention as the other mods. BANOV.bikeyexists in the server’skeysdirectory.- A client with matching Banov Workshop content can join without a signature rejection.
- The player spawns on Banov rather than the previous default world.
- Loot, events, and persistence work after a controlled restart.
Only after these checks pass should you introduce additional mods. This isolates map installation problems from later compatibility problems.
Updating Banov without losing mission edits
Keep two update surfaces separate
The Workshop map and the empty.banov mission are separate update surfaces. Update both when the Banov author or provider publishes matching files, but do not assume that updating one automatically updates the other. Record the installed versions or dates before changing anything so you can identify which component caused a regression.
Back up and merge XML changes
Before replacing a mission, back up modified types.xml, events.xml, and any other customized files. Compare the new mission with your backup and merge changes deliberately. Blindly copying an old file over a new mission can remove fixes required by the updated map; blindly replacing your customized file can erase your economy and event settings.
Expect compatibility windows after DayZ patches
DayZ updates can break Banov until the map developer publishes a compatible release. After a DayZ patch, check for a Banov update and read the provider’s or map author’s compatibility notes before changing unrelated server settings. If the map worked before the patch and fails immediately afterward, treat compatibility as the first hypothesis.

The server starts on the wrong world
Check both sides of the selection: the mission directory must be named exactly empty.banov, and serverDZ.cfg must contain template="empty.banov". Also confirm that you edited the configuration file used by the active service, not a spare copy in an archive or client directory. If the template is correct but the world still does not load, verify that @Banov is present in the launch parameter and points to the copied server directory.
Signature or key errors appear
Confirm that BANOV.bikey is in the dedicated server’s keys directory, not merely inside the mod folder. Then update the client’s Banov Workshop content so it matches the server package. A key copied from an older or different Banov release may not validate the files currently being loaded.
The server crashes after another mod is added
Remove the newly added mod and verify that Banov starts alone. If it does, add the other mods back one at a time, restarting after each addition. This process identifies the conflicting package instead of leaving several simultaneous variables. GTXGaming warns that some Workshop mods are incompatible with Banov and can cause crashes or startup failures; a clean Banov-only test is the quickest way to establish whether that warning applies to your combination.
An XML parse error stops startup
Read the exact file name, line, and element reported by the server. Compare that mission file with the current Banov package and your backup, checking for unclosed tags, duplicate elements, or edits copied from another map. The community wiki has reported an events.xml Sedan02 parsing issue and suggested removing the offending event line. Treat that as community guidance, not a universal patch: verify the error against the current Banov files and keep a backup before removing an event.
The server breaks after a DayZ update
Check whether Banov has a compatibility update and review the host or map author’s notes. Do not immediately delete mission files or alter unrelated launch settings. If a compatible Banov release is unavailable, restore the backed-up working files or temporarily return to the prior known-good combination, subject to your provider’s rollback options.
Players cannot join even though the server starts
Verify that clients have the same Banov Workshop content and that the server’s key is present. A server can complete startup while rejecting clients later because of a missing signature key, a different Workshop build, or a client that has not enabled the map. Have one test player update the Workshop content, restart the game, and reconnect before changing server configuration.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Both approaches can run Banov, but they shift responsibility to different places. The installation facts are the same; the practical difference is who maintains the files and investigates failures.

Choose self-hosting when direct file control and custom mission work matter more than convenience. Choose managed hosting when you prefer a panel to handle routine installation and server operation, while accepting provider-specific update and troubleshooting procedures.
A repeatable maintenance routine
- Before every update, stop the server and back up the active mission,
serverDZ.cfg, custom XML files, and current launch parameters. - Check whether both the Workshop map and mission package have matching updates.
- Review DayZ patch notes or the map author’s compatibility notice when a game update has just shipped.
- Apply the map and mission changes separately if necessary, comparing files rather than overwriting custom XML blindly.
- Start Banov without additional mods and inspect startup logs.
- Join with a matching client and test spawning, loot, events, and persistence.
- Reintroduce other mods one at a time, testing after each addition.
This routine keeps a map update, a mission edit, and a third-party mod conflict from being mistaken for one problem.

If all five conditions are true, test the unmodified map first. Most difficult failures occur when one of these pieces is missing, points to a different location, or comes from a different release. Once the clean installation survives a restart and a client connection, add custom XML and gameplay mods incrementally so every later change remains identifiable.
