To serve an HTML file from /var/www/html, place the file in that directory, run a web server such as Apache HTTP Server or NGINX, and open the matching URL. The conventional homepage is /var/www/html/index.html, available at http://localhost/ or http://127.0.0.1/.

/var/www/html is a filesystem directory, not a URL. The browser requests a path, and the server maps that path beneath its configured document root. If the file is named about.html, the usual address is http://localhost/about.html.

What /var/www/html represents
A web server has a directory from which it reads files for HTTP requests. Apache calls this directory DocumentRoot; NGINX calls it root. On a standard Ubuntu setup, both servers can use /var/www/html as that directory.
The directory itself never appears in the browser address. Instead, the server removes the host and leading URL path from the request, appends what remains to the configured root, and looks for a file on disk. This is why a request for http://localhost/about.html normally reads /var/www/html/about.html.

A request for a directory can resolve to an index file. Apache documents the conventional behavior this way: “Typically, a document called index.html will be served when a directory is requested without a file name being specified.” NGINX provides equivalent behavior through its index setting.
Prepare the file and directory
Use the conventional homepage name
Create or copy the page as /var/www/html/index.html when it should open at the site root. A minimal file is enough to test the server:

</html>Save that content as /var/www/html/index.html. If you cannot write directly to the directory, create the file in your home directory and copy it with administrative privileges, or edit it through a root-capable editor. Do not confuse a filename such as index.HTML with index.html; on a typical Linux filesystem, letter case matters.
Place additional pages under the root
For a page called about.html, use /var/www/html/about.html and request http://localhost/about.html. For a subdirectory page, create /var/www/html/work/guppies.html and request http://localhost/work/guppies.html. If /var/www/html/work/index.html exists, http://localhost/work/ can serve that index file.
Serve the files with Apache
Confirm that Apache is running
Apache must be installed and active before a browser can retrieve the file. On Ubuntu, check the service with:
sudo systemctl status apache2If it is installed but stopped, start it and arrange for it to start at boot:

Verify Apache’s active document root
A default page can appear even when your file exists. That usually means the request reached a different enabled virtual host, or the active virtual host points to another directory. Inspect the enabled site configuration and find the DocumentRoot directive. Confirm that it names /var/www/html, then verify that the requested filename exists below that directory.
On a conventional Ubuntu installation, the default virtual-host files are under /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/; the exact enabled file can vary after administration changes. Use Apache’s configuration test before reloading:
sudo apachectl configtestA successful test reports that the syntax is acceptable. If it reports an error, correct that configuration problem before applying it.
Apply Apache configuration changes
Adding or editing an HTML file normally needs no service restart. Apache reads the file when it receives the request. If you changed a virtual-host or server setting, reload Apache so it rereads the configuration:
sudo systemctl reload apache2A full restart is appropriate when a reload is unavailable or when you intentionally need to stop and start the service:
sudo systemctl restart apache2Serve the files with NGINX
Confirm that NGINX is running
Check the NGINX service:
sudo systemctl status nginxStart it and enable it for future boots when necessary:
sudo systemctl enable --now nginxNGINX uses the root directive to choose the filesystem directory used to search for a requested file. Its default Ubuntu server block commonly uses /var/www/html, but an administrator may have changed it.

Check the server block and index setting
Inspect the enabled server-block configuration and confirm two settings:
root /var/www/html;points to the directory containing the files.index index.html;includes the homepage filename you actually created.
NGINX appends the request URI to the directory named by root. Therefore, a request for /fish/guppies.html is searched as /var/www/html/fish/guppies.html when that is the active root.
Before applying a configuration edit, test it:
sudo nginx -tFix any syntax or path error reported by the test. Then reload NGINX:
sudo systemctl reload nginxA restart is available when a complete service restart is required:
sudo systemctl restart nginxChoose the URL for a particular file

Replace localhost with 127.0.0.1 for the same computer. From another device on the same network, use the server’s reachable IP address instead, provided the service is listening on that interface and the firewall permits the connection. A local URL does not automatically make a page publicly reachable on the Internet.
Understand directory and file mapping
Directory requests
When the request ends in a slash, the server treats it as a directory request. It checks the configured index-file list for a file inside that directory. Thus, http://www.example.com/work/ can resolve to /var/www/html/work/index.html when that file exists and the server’s root is /var/www/html.
File requests
When the request contains a filename, the server appends that path to the root and looks for the resulting file. A request for /fish/guppies.html maps to /var/www/html/fish/guppies.html under the same root. The URL path is relative to the root; it is not an absolute Linux path.

Trailing slashes and case
Use a trailing slash for a directory URL, such as /work/, and include the exact filename for a file URL. Linux usually distinguishes About.html, about.html, and ABOUT.HTML. A mismatch produces a missing-file response even though a similarly named file is visible in the directory.

The browser shows a default Apache or NGINX page
A default page generally proves that an HTTP server answered, but not that it used your intended file. Check these possibilities in order:
- Confirm the file is really at
/var/www/html/index.html, not in a similarly named directory. - Inspect the active Apache virtual host’s
DocumentRootor the active NGINX server block’sroot. - Check whether another enabled virtual host or server block is selected for the hostname you entered.
- Reload the server after configuration changes and then refresh the browser.
If the server is configured for a different root, either move the file into that root or deliberately change the configuration to point at /var/www/html.
A 404 Not Found response
A 404 means the URL-to-file mapping did not find the requested path. Compare the URL with the filesystem path one component at a time:
- Check the hostname and path you typed.
- Check every directory name and filename for spelling and letter case.
- Confirm that the file is below the active document root rather than beside it.
- For a directory URL, confirm that the directory contains an index file listed in the server configuration.
- Verify that a rewrite or alternate server block has not changed the path being searched.
For example, http://localhost/about.html requires /var/www/html/about.html only when /var/www/html is the active root. If the root is /srv/site, the same URL searches /srv/site/about.html instead.

A 403 commonly indicates that the web-server process cannot traverse one of the parent directories or cannot read the requested file. Check permissions on the document root, each parent directory, and the HTML file. The service account must be able to traverse directories and read the file.
There is no single ownership arrangement that is correct for every installation. Avoid changing ownership blindly; first identify the account used by the running service and apply the least access necessary. Also check whether a security policy, filesystem mount option, or server rule is denying access.
NGINX returns an error but the file exists
Inspect NGINX’s access and error logs while making a request. The access log shows what URL reached NGINX; the error log often identifies a root-path, permission, or index-resolution problem. On typical Ubuntu installations these logs are under /var/log/nginx/, although custom configurations can send them elsewhere.
Then test the active configuration with sudo nginx -t, confirm the root and index directives, and reload after correcting the issue.
Apache does not serve the edited configuration
Run sudo apachectl configtest and inspect which virtual host is enabled. A syntactically valid file is not necessarily the file Apache selected for your request. Confirm the hostname, port, and enabled-site selection, then reload Apache after the intended site is active.
Do not enable directory browsing casually
If a directory has no usable index file and directory indexing is enabled, the server may display a list of its contents. Ubuntu guidance warns that exposing directory contents is usually undesirable for a document root. Keep directory indexes disabled unless you have a specific, understood reason to publish a listing, and place a deliberate index.html in directories that should have a landing page.

Do not run both servers on the same address and port without configuring that arrangement intentionally. If one service is already listening for HTTP requests, use it, stop the other, or assign distinct addresses or ports.
A repeatable verification checklist
- Confirm the intended file exists, for example
/var/www/html/index.html. - Confirm exactly one intended web server is active for the address and port you are testing.
- Check Apache’s
DocumentRootor NGINX’sroot. - Check the index-file setting when requesting a directory.
- Open
http://localhost/for the homepage or the relative URL for another file. - If the result is wrong, classify it as a default page, 404, or 403 before changing anything.
- Use the relevant configuration test and logs, correct the underlying path or permission issue, and reload the service.
Bottom line
Put the homepage at /var/www/html/index.html, make sure Apache or NGINX is actually using /var/www/html as its root, and open http://localhost/. Every other page follows the same rule: append its path relative to the document root. A default page points to the wrong enabled site or missing filename, a 404 points to a failed path mapping, and a 403 points to traversal or read access that the web-server process lacks.
