It normally does not require a factory reset, but you should complete and verify a backup first. To leave without wiping, install the stable public release and opt out before the next beta update is installed. If you leave at any other time by returning to production software with a factory image, the phone is reset and all user data is removed.
What you need before installing
Android 17 QPR beta builds are for supported Google Pixel devices, not for every Android phone. Eligibility is tied to the particular QPR release, so check Google’s live Android 17 QPR page immediately before enrolling. Its current Android 17 QPR 3 list includes the following models:

| Pixel family | Models currently listed for Android 17 QPR 3 |
|---|---|
| Pixel 6 | Pixel 6a |
| Pixel 7 | Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a |
| Tablet and foldable | Pixel Tablet, Pixel Fold |
| Pixel 8 | Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8a |
| Pixel 9 | Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 9a |
| Pixel 10 | Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Pixel 10a |
| Pixel 11 | Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, Pixel 11 Pro Fold |
Model support can change between releases. A Pixel that was eligible for one preview may not be eligible for a later QPR, and a phone that is not on the live list cannot be enrolled for that build.

Decide whether a beta belongs on your main phone
A QPR beta is development software, not a finished public release. Google’s Android SDK development terms say development builds may contain errors, defects and security vulnerabilities, including problems that can cause significant damage or an irrecoverable loss of use of a device. Features can still be incomplete, and Google may deliver development components through updates.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
That makes a beta a poor fit for a phone you need for uninterrupted banking, work authentication, medical access, travel, emergency calls or other high-consequence tasks. If you have a spare eligible Pixel, it is the safer test device. Installing the beta also means accepting that an app, accessory or security workflow could misbehave until a later update.
Google’s terms also caution testers not to rely on development software having the full functionality of a stable release. Treat the beta as a test environment: keep important work and personal data backed up, and do not assume a feature will remain available or behave the same way in a later build. These terms are a practical warning, not a prediction that every user will encounter a problem.
Back up before enrollment
Google says a full data reset is not needed in most cases when moving to Android 17 QPR 3 through the Beta for Pixel OTA route. “Not usually wiped” is not the same as “guaranteed safe,” however. A failed update, a later decision to flash, or a missed opt-out window can still put your data at risk.
Before enrolling:
- Run an Android backup from the Pixel’s Settings and wait for it to finish.
- Open the backup details in Settings and confirm that the account, device and recent backup information are what you expect.
- Use Google Drive’s backup view to check when the device backup was last updated.
- Confirm that photos, contacts, messages, authenticator data, documents and other important content are actually synced or included in the service you use.
- Make sure you know the Google Account credentials and any two-factor recovery method needed after a reset.
- For banking, password-manager and work apps, check whether the app requires a separate export, cloud sync or re-enrollment. Android backup being enabled does not guarantee that every app’s local data or authentication state can be restored.
If you cannot identify where a critical item will come from after a reset, do not start a flashing or downgrade operation yet. The OTA enrollment route is lower risk, but the same backup discipline is worthwhile.
Install Android 17 QPR beta with the normal OTA route
For most Pixel owners, enrollment followed by the offered system update is the straightforward method. It avoids a computer and, in most cases, avoids a full reset.
- Confirm the exact model. Compare the phone with Google’s current Android 17 QPR device list rather than relying on its marketing name or an older eligibility list.
- Finish the backup checks. Do not proceed while a backup is still running or while you are unsure where essential data is stored.
- Open the Android Beta for Pixel program. Sign in with the Google Account used on the eligible Pixel and select that device in the program portal.
- Enroll the Pixel. The portal is dynamic, so the wording and placement of the enrollment control can change. Follow the current on-screen confirmation for the selected device; do not enroll a different Pixel by mistake.
- Check for the OTA update on the phone. After enrollment, open the system update area in Settings and check for an offered Android 17 QPR update. Google’s portal and the device can take time to reflect the enrollment.
- Read the update identity before accepting. Confirm that the package is the Android 17 QPR beta you intended to test, then install it while the phone has adequate battery and a reliable connection.
- Allow the phone to reboot and finish optimizing. Do not interrupt a restart or repeatedly power-cycle the device while the update is applying.
The official portal does not provide a permanently fixed, device-by-device sequence of button labels. If your screen differs from a guide written for an earlier preview, use the current portal and Pixel Settings labels rather than forcing an old tap sequence.

After the OTA finishes
Let the phone complete its first boot, then check the Android version and build information in Settings. Verify that calls, mobile data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, notifications and the apps you rely on still work. Keep your backup current while testing; a beta installation does not create a special recovery copy that replaces your normal backup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe safest way to leave the beta without wiping data
The no-wipe exit is controlled by timing. Google documents a limited opportunity after a stable public release is applied:
- Remain on the beta until the phone receives and installs the corresponding stable public release.
- After that stable update is installed, use the Android Beta for Pixel program to opt out of future beta updates.
- Do not install the next beta update while you are waiting to opt out. Google says the no-wipe opportunity ends when that next beta is applied.
This is not a permanent “opt out whenever you like” guarantee. Google’s documentation establishes a limited interval tied to the stable release, but the exact number of hours or days and the current control labels are not specified on the extracted program page. Check the live portal as soon as the stable build arrives and follow its current instructions.
Opting out before the stable release, or after the next beta has already been installed, does not provide the same no-wipe protection. In those situations, returning to ordinary production software generally means using a reset-required path.
Leaving outside the no-wipe window: factory image and reset
If you need to return to a public build when the documented stable-release window is no longer available, Google’s factory-image instructions require a full device reset when moving from beta to production. The reset removes user data from the Pixel. Treat a backup as mandatory, not optional, and verify that it contains what you need before you begin.
A reset can remove locally stored files, app data that the developer does not back up, downloaded media, device-bound credentials and some authenticator registrations. Plan time to sign in again and to re-enroll work, banking or security applications. Keep the Google Account recovery information available because the phone will be set up as a newly erased device.

Manual flashing with Android Flash Tool
Flashing is a separate, more hands-on route. Google recommends Android Flash Tool for a supported Pixel. It gives you direct control over the image you apply, but it is not the low-friction alternative to OTA enrollment.
Requirements
- A supported Pixel and a compatible USB cable.
- A computer with a WebUSB-compatible browser, such as Chrome or Edge 79 or later.
- Permission to unlock the device and an unlocked bootloader state as required by the tool.
- USB debugging enabled in Developer options.
- A complete, verified backup before flashing.
- Enough uninterrupted time to complete the process without disconnecting the phone.
Enabling Developer options and USB debugging changes the phone’s security posture. Turn them on only when you are ready to use the official tool, and follow the tool’s current prompts for authorization and unlocking. The exact screens can vary by Pixel model and software version.
What flashing does to enrollment and data
Google’s factory-image guidance says flashing from production to beta, or returning from beta to production, requires a full reset. The wipe is part of the transition, not an optional cleanup step. A beta build flashed with Android Flash Tool automatically enrolls the Pixel in subsequent beta updates, so flashing once does not by itself mean you will remain on a one-time, isolated build. If you do not want future beta OTAs, use the program’s opt-out controls after the installation and observe the same timing rules that apply to your situation.
Because flashing erases the phone, it is best viewed as a recovery or control option for people who understand bootloader and USB tooling, not as the default installation method.
Factory-image build information and how to use it
The current factory-image page contains page-specific metadata for the Android 17 QPR material: a September 29, 2026 release date, builds CP41.260831.007.A3 and CP41.260831.011, and a 2026-08-05 security patch level. These values identify entries on that factory-image page; they are not a promise that every enrolled Pixel will receive the same OTA package.
Before downloading or flashing, open the live factory-image and enrollment pages and match the image to the exact Pixel model and the release you intend to install. Build numbers, release entries and available devices can change. Never substitute an image for a different model merely because the Android version number looks similar.

Choosing between OTA enrollment and flashing
| Path | Data-loss exposure | Equipment and setup | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beta for Pixel enrollment plus OTA | Google says a full reset is not needed in most cases for Android 17 QPR 3 installation. | Eligible Pixel, Google Account and the phone’s update function; no computer required. | Most users who want the simplest installation. |
| Stable release, then timely opt-out | No wipe is available only during Google’s limited post-stable-release interval and before the next beta is installed. | Eligible Pixel and access to the live beta portal. | Returning to public software while preserving the phone’s data. |
| Android Flash Tool | Full reset when crossing between production and beta; user data is removed. | WebUSB browser, USB cable, device unlocking, USB debugging and a computer. | Controlled manual installation or recovery when the OTA route is unsuitable. |
In short, OTA enrollment minimizes setup and is the normal choice for installing the beta; flashing adds computer-based tooling and control but carries the reset risk when moving between beta and production. The special stable-release opt-out is not a third installation method. It is the documented way to stop future beta updates without wiping, provided you act before installing another beta.

Your Pixel is not shown as eligible
Check the live Android 17 QPR device list and the exact model in Settings. If the model is absent, do not try to force enrollment or flash an image intended for another device. QPR support is release-specific.
You enrolled but no beta OTA appears
Confirm that you enrolled the intended Pixel and Google Account, then check the phone’s system-update area again. The program portal is dynamic and the device may not show the offer immediately. If the portal and phone disagree, rely on the current Google enrollment status and do not install an image for a different model as a workaround.
You want out now and the phone is still on beta
First determine whether the phone has already installed the corresponding stable public release. If it has, look for the limited no-wipe opt-out opportunity and avoid the next beta update. If it has not, assume that a production return outside that window will require a reset and prepare a verified backup before using a factory image.
The phone will not be usable after a failed update
Do not repeatedly interrupt startup. Use Google’s supported recovery or flashing documentation for the exact Pixel model, and expect that a production/beta transition through a factory image erases user data. If your backup was incomplete, local-only data may not be recoverable.

- When the stable release arrives, opt out before installing another beta if you want the documented no-wipe exit.
- If flashing, use Android Flash Tool with a WebUSB browser, USB debugging, device unlocking and a verified backup.
- Expect a full reset when flashing between beta and production, and plan account and app re-enrollment afterward.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will enrolling in the Android 17 QPR beta erase my Pixel?
Google says a full reset is not needed in most cases when installing Android 17 QPR 3 through the Beta for Pixel OTA route. Still, back up first: the OTA route is not a guarantee against update problems, and later flashing or leaving outside the no-wipe window can erase data.

How long do I have to opt out after the stable update?
Google describes a limited period after the stable public release is installed, ending when you install the next beta update. The exact duration is not specified in the program documentation described here, so check the live Android Beta for Pixel portal promptly after the stable update arrives.
Can I opt out now and keep my data if I am still on a beta build?
The documented no-wipe option is tied to installing the stable public release first and opting out before the next beta update. Opting out at another point does not provide that same protection; returning to production by flashing a factory image requires a full reset.
Does Android Flash Tool keep me out of future beta updates?
No. Google says a beta build flashed with Android Flash Tool automatically enrolls the Pixel in subsequent beta updates. If you do not want future beta OTAs, use the program’s opt-out controls and follow the timing rules for a no-wipe exit.
Can I install this beta on a non-Pixel Android phone?
No. Android 17 QPR beta enrollment is for supported Google Pixel devices. Check Google’s live Android 17 QPR page for the current model list, because eligibility can differ by release.
The Bottom Line
For the simplest installation, back up your eligible Pixel, enroll it in Android Beta for Pixel and install the offered OTA. For a no-wipe exit, wait for the stable public release, then opt out before installing another beta. If you return to production by flashing outside that limited opportunity, expect a full reset and loss of user data.
