How to Install SteamOS or Bazzite on an Older Handheld Gaming PC

Short answer: Bazzite is usually the practical choice for an older Windows handheld that Valve does not officially support, while SteamOS makes sense when the hardware is close to Valve-supported AMD handhelds and you want Valve’s recovery workflow. Before either installation, back up the internal drive, record your Windows BitLocker recovery key, confirm UEFI/GPT and Vulkan support, and prepare a USB 3.0 flash drive with at least 10GB of free space.

A clean installation is simpler and safer than same-drive dual boot. Dual boot is possible, but it requires shrinking Windows, manual partitioning and a separate EFI partition; one mistake can make Windows or your personal files inaccessible.

SteamOS or Bazzite: which is better for an older handheld?

The right choice depends less on the brand of handheld than on its processor, graphics hardware, firmware and the level of support you need. SteamOS is Valve’s operating system and uses Valve’s recovery/install environment. Bazzite is a Fedora-based gaming distribution with separate Desktop, Handheld and Developer images, including a Bazzite-Deck variant that provides Steam Gaming Mode on supported hardware.

Decision factor SteamOS Bazzite
Official-device support Best fit for hardware close to Valve-supported AMD handhelds. Valve warns that troubleshooting on devices outside its officially powered hardware may be limited. Designed for handhelds where SteamOS is unavailable or missing functions, with model-specific documentation and fixes.
Image selection Download and write Valve’s SteamOS recovery image. Use the image picker to choose handheld hardware, GPU family, desktop environment and, when supported, the -deck Steam Gaming Mode variant.
Graphics compatibility Most predictable on supported AMD hardware; unsupported GPUs may install but behave poorly. Requires Vulkan 1.3 or newer for the normal experience. Bazzite documents a Proton-CachyOS option with DXVK-Sarek for some Vulkan 1.1/1.2 GPUs, but it is a compromise.
Updates and drivers Valve controls the operating-system image and hardware target. Frequently updated kernels and drivers can help newer or unusual handheld hardware.
Recovery and rollback Valve’s recovery environment is the official reinstall path. Use Bazzite’s image and documented recovery procedures; keep a separate backup because reinstalling can erase partitions.
Dual-boot tooling No general-purpose wizard for every Windows handheld; partitioning is a manual task. Same-drive dual boot also requires manual partitioning and a separate EFI partition.
Desktop environment Valve’s SteamOS interface plus its desktop mode where available. Choose KDE or GNOME in the image picker, or select the handheld image for a console-style workflow.
Handheld-specific fixes Support is strongest on Valve’s own hardware targets. The handheld wiki documents fixes for controls, scaling, orientation, TDP, sleep and other model-specific issues.

Choose Bazzite when

  • Your handheld is not officially supported by SteamOS.
  • You need a newer Linux kernel or graphics driver for the device.
  • You want a maintained handheld image with a choice between Desktop Mode and Steam Gaming Mode.
  • Your hardware meets the Vulkan, RAM, storage and firmware requirements.

Choose SteamOS when

  • The device is close to Valve-supported AMD handheld hardware.
  • You prefer Valve’s official recovery workflow.
  • You accept that support and troubleshooting may be limited on hardware outside Valve’s official targets.

Check compatibility before changing the disk

Installing an operating system is not proof that an older handheld will deliver a good gaming experience. Check these gates first, especially if the device has an older integrated GPU.

UEFI and GPT

The internal drive must boot in UEFI mode and use a GPT partition table. Bazzite states that installation to an MBR-partitioned disk will fail. If Windows was installed in legacy BIOS mode on an MBR disk, convert or replace the disk only after a verified backup and after confirming that the firmware can boot UEFI. Do not delete partitions merely to force a conversion; that can destroy the Windows installation.

Memory and SSD space

Bazzite lists 8GB of system memory as the minimum. It requires 50GB of free space on an internal SSD and recommends 120GB of free space. The 50GB figure is a floor, not a comfortable dual-boot allocation: updates, shader caches, compatibility tools and games consume space quickly. If the handheld has a small internal drive, consider replacing it with a larger NVMe SSD only after checking the model’s physical size, screw layout and thermal constraints. Drive replacement and partition changes can erase data.

Vulkan capability

Bazzite’s normal requirement is a graphics card capable of Vulkan 1.3 or higher. A GPU that predates that capability may still boot Linux, but Steam Gaming Mode, Proton games, video playback or hardware acceleration can be unreliable. Bazzite documents Proton-CachyOS with DXVK-Sarek for some Vulkan 1.1 and 1.2 hardware. Treat that as a fallback for experimentation, not an equivalent to modern Vulkan support: Bazzite warns against using the workaround with anti-cheat or multiplayer games.

  • USB 3.0-enabled and USB 2.0-compatible
  • Protect private files with SanDisk SecureAccess software
  • Support: 5-year limited warranty

What to identify in Windows

  • Open Settings > System > About and record the processor and installed RAM.
  • Open Device Manager > Display adapters and note the exact GPU model.
  • Open Disk Management, right-click the disk number (not a partition), choose Properties > Volumes and record whether the partition style is GPT.
  • In firmware setup, verify that a UEFI boot mode is available. Do not switch modes casually while Windows is still installed.

Protect Windows and personal data

Assume that a clean install will erase the selected drive and that a partitioning error can erase every partition. Copy personal files to another drive or a verified cloud backup, and confirm that the files can be opened from the backup.

Save the BitLocker recovery key

Windows may require the 48-digit BitLocker recovery key after firmware, partition or bootloader changes. From Windows, open Settings > Privacy & security > Device encryption or search for Manage BitLocker, then save the recovery key somewhere that is not the handheld’s internal disk. Record which Microsoft account or printed copy contains it. Bazzite notes that several handhelds require BitLocker to be unlocked before installation; write the recovery key down even when Windows currently starts normally.

Prepare Windows for a Linux install

  1. Unlock or suspend BitLocker encryption, following Windows’ prompt to save the recovery key first.
  2. Disable Fast Startup in Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do. Select Change settings that are currently unavailable, clear Turn on fast startup, and save.
  3. Shut Windows down normally. Do not hibernate it before changing partitions; Bazzite specifically warns against installing while Windows is in Hibernation Mode.
  4. If you plan to dual boot, leave Windows intact until the Linux installer is ready and make the free space from Windows’ own Disk Management tool whenever possible.

Make the installer USB

Use a USB 3.0 flash drive with at least 10GB of free space. Writing an image erases the flash drive, so remove any files you need before starting. A compact wired USB keyboard is useful during account creation and may be necessary to type a password or unlock encrypted storage when the handheld’s built-in controls are not yet active.

Download the correct image

  1. For Bazzite, open its image picker and select the handheld hardware family, the GPU family, KDE or GNOME, and the -deck Steam Gaming Mode variant when the picker lists it as supported. Choosing a desktop image instead of the handheld image can omit controls or the console interface you expect.
  2. For SteamOS, download Valve’s current SteamOS recovery image. Use the recovery image intended for installation rather than an unrelated Steam client package.
  3. Keep the downloaded image on the Windows drive or another location that will not be erased. If a checksum is supplied with the download, verify it before flashing.

Flash the drive

  1. Insert the USB 3.0 drive directly into the handheld or a reliable USB hub.
  2. Use Fedora Media Writer, Bazzite’s preferred flasher, or use Rufus or Etcher, which Bazzite supports. Select the downloaded image and the correct USB device, then confirm the erase warning.
  3. Wait for the write and verification stages to finish. Do not remove the drive when the progress bar reaches 100 percent; close the program only after it reports completion.
  4. Do not use Ventoy for this installation. Bazzite states that Ventoy is not recommended under any circumstance and that it will not provide support for problems caused by it.

Boot the handheld from USB

The exact key or button combination is model-specific. Consult the handheld’s manual or support page for its UEFI setup and one-time boot-menu controls. Common designs use a volume button, a dedicated menu button, or a keyboard key such as F2, F7, F12 or Delete, but do not assume a combination from another model.

  1. Power the handheld off completely, connect the prepared USB drive and, if possible, connect the charger.
  2. Open the one-time boot menu or UEFI setup using the documented button combination.
  3. Select the USB entry that is explicitly marked as a UEFI device. If two USB entries appear, do not choose a legacy or non-UEFI entry.
  4. If the USB does not appear, check that the image finished writing, try another USB port or adapter, and confirm that UEFI boot and external-media boot are enabled. Avoid changing Secure Boot or other firmware settings without recording their original values.

Install Bazzite or SteamOS cleanly

A clean install is the least complicated route when Windows is no longer needed on the handheld or when you have a replacement drive. It removes the existing operating system and partitions from the target drive.

  1. Start the installer from the USB and connect a wired keyboard if the on-screen controls are incomplete.
  2. Choose the target internal SSD carefully. Compare its capacity with the drive you identified in Windows; do not rely only on a generic name such as “NVMe.”
  3. Select the clean-install or automatic partitioning option. Confirm the erase warning only after verifying the backup and BitLocker key.
  4. Let the installer create the required GPT, EFI and Linux partitions. Do not interrupt it by closing the lid or removing power.
  5. Create the local user account when prompted. A physical keyboard makes usernames and strong passwords easier to enter and is useful if the installer cannot yet map the handheld’s controls.
  6. When installation finishes, shut down, remove the USB drive, then start the handheld from its internal SSD.

If the installer refuses the disk because it is MBR, stop. Recheck the boot mode and partition style rather than repeatedly retrying. Converting a disk or deleting its partition table without a backup can make the Windows data unrecoverable.

Set up same-drive dual boot with Windows

Dual boot preserves Windows but adds more ways to lose access to an operating system. The process is manual on both platforms; there is no universal wizard that understands every handheld’s firmware and factory partition layout.

Before shrinking Windows

  • Complete the backup and BitLocker steps above.
  • Disable Fast Startup and perform a full Windows shutdown.
  • Use Disk Management to shrink the Windows partition, leaving the resulting space unallocated. Do not format that space as NTFS or assign it a drive letter.
  • Keep the existing Windows EFI System Partition. If the Linux installer requires an EFI partition for its boot files, create or allocate a separate EFI partition rather than overwriting Windows’ boot files.

Manual partitioning in the installer

  1. Boot the USB in UEFI mode and choose manual or custom partitioning.
  2. Identify the unallocated space created by shrinking Windows. Never select the Windows recovery, OEM, Microsoft Reserved or active data partitions for deletion.
  3. Create the Linux root and required supporting partitions in the unallocated space. Allocate at least 50GB for Bazzite; 120GB gives substantially more room for updates, shader caches and games.
  4. Create a separate EFI System Partition for the Linux bootloader if the installer’s documentation and your layout require one. Give it a clear mount point and do not format the Windows EFI partition by mistake.
  5. Review the installer’s final summary. It should show changes only in the unallocated area and any deliberately created Linux EFI partition. Cancel if it proposes formatting the Windows volume.
  6. Install, reboot and test both entries. If the handheld boots directly to Windows, open UEFI boot options and move the Linux boot entry above Windows Boot Manager; if Windows alone fails, use the Windows recovery environment and the saved BitLocker key rather than deleting Linux partitions at random.

Keep a Windows recovery drive available. A firmware update, a failed bootloader update or an accidental partition change can alter the boot order even when both operating systems remain intact.

Correct display scaling and orientation

Open the desktop display settings, labelled Display(s) or Display and Monitor depending on the environment. Bazzite notes that scaling can be incorrect for a handheld screen immediately after installation. Set the native resolution, choose a readable scale, and check rotation. A portrait-oriented panel mounted in a landscape chassis may need a 90-degree rotation before games and menus line up.

Test the hardware in a deliberate order

  1. Press every built-in control in the desktop and Steam Gaming Mode. Confirm that the analog sticks, triggers, shoulder buttons, D-pad and menu buttons are detected.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi and test both download and sleep-wake behavior.
  3. Play a local video or game to check audio output, speakers, headphone detection and volume keys.
  4. Put the handheld to sleep, wake it and verify that the screen, controls and wireless connection return.
  5. Check battery reporting, charging limits and any available TDP or performance controls.
  6. Launch a game that matches the GPU’s Vulkan capability before installing a large library. Watch for missing textures, black screens, shader compilation failures and abnormal frame pacing.

Use Bazzite’s handheld wiki for model-specific fixes rather than applying a workaround intended for a different device. The wiki is the appropriate place to look when a control, orientation, sleep mode, TDP control or display behaves differently from the expected image.

Troubleshoot the failures that matter most

Symptom Likely cause What to do
The USB is missing from the boot menu The image was not written correctly, the port or adapter is incompatible, or the system is not booting UEFI media. Rewrite the image with Fedora Media Writer, Rufus or Etcher; try another port; connect power; and select the UEFI USB entry in the documented boot menu.
Installation fails immediately on the disk The drive uses MBR instead of GPT, or the installer was started in legacy mode. Stop and verify the firmware mode and partition table. Do not convert or erase the disk until the backup is verified.
Windows asks for a recovery key BitLocker detected a boot, firmware or partition change. Enter the saved recovery key. If you cannot produce it, do not continue changing partitions or reinstalling.
Windows will not start after dual boot The EFI partition or boot order was changed, or Windows was hibernated. Boot Windows recovery media, restore Windows Boot Manager and use the BitLocker key. Do not format EFI partitions while troubleshooting.
Steam Gaming Mode opens with unusable sizing Fresh-install display scaling or rotation is wrong. In the desktop display settings, correct resolution, scale and orientation, then sign out or restart the gaming session.
Games install but have severe glitches The GPU may not meet Vulkan 1.3 capability, or a driver and Proton combination may be unsuitable. Confirm the GPU model and Vulkan level. On Vulkan 1.1/1.2 hardware, the documented DXVK-Sarek route is experimental and should not be used for anti-cheat or multiplayer games.
Controls, sleep or TDP are missing The wrong Bazzite image was selected or the model needs a device-specific fix. Check that the handheld image and supported -deck variant were selected, then follow the model entry in the handheld wiki.

When to stop and keep Windows

Do not force the installation simply because the handheld is old enough to feel slow in Windows. If the GPU lacks Vulkan 1.3, the device has less than 8GB of RAM, the SSD cannot spare 50GB, or the firmware cannot boot UEFI/GPT reliably, the result may be a technically successful install that is poor for games. Keep Windows, upgrade the SSD or test Linux from an external drive only after confirming that the hardware can meet the operating system’s practical requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For supported hardware, SteamOS offers the most direct Valve recovery path. For unsupported or unusual handhelds, Bazzite’s hardware-specific image selection and wiki are generally more useful. In either case, the quality of the result depends on the GPU’s Vulkan support and on careful partitioning more than on the installer’s ability to complete.
