How to Install Power BI Desktop with the Intune Enterprise App Catalog

Deploy Microsoft Power BI Desktop to managed 64-bit Windows devices through Intune’s Enterprise App Catalog without manually packaging the installer.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft Power BI Desktop is listed in the Intune Enterprise App Catalog (the catalog list was updated April 16, 2026). You can deploy it to managed 64-bit Windows devices without downloading and wrapping the installer yourself. In Intune, create a Windows Enterprise App Catalog app, select Microsoft Power BI Desktop, keep the catalog’s tested commands and detection rules, assign a pilot group, and verify the result on both the device and in Intune.

This procedure installs the Windows authoring application. It does not install Power BI web apps, template apps, or a Power BI service license.

Before you begin

  • An Intune tenant with Enterprise Application Management (Enterprise App Catalog) access. The capability is part of Microsoft Intune Suite and is available through trial or purchase: Microsoft’s Enterprise App Catalog documentation.
  • Appropriate Intune permissions to create and assign applications.
  • Enrolled, managed Windows devices and user or device groups to target. Enterprise App Management supports 64-bit Windows devices; confirm availability for your sovereign-cloud tenant before deployment. Microsoft documents public cloud, GCC High, and DoD environments in its Enterprise Application Management overview.
  • A pilot group and an inventory of existing Power BI Desktop installations, including Microsoft Store and manually installed copies.

Power BI Desktop runtime requirements

Power BI Desktop requires Windows 10 or Windows Server 2016 or later, .NET Framework 4.7.2 or later, Microsoft Edge, at least 2 GB of available RAM (4 GB or more recommended), a supported 64-bit processor, and a display resolution of at least 1440×900 or 1600×900. WebView2 must be present if it was not installed automatically or was later removed. Microsoft no longer supports the 32-bit edition. See Power BI Desktop requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep two checks separate: Intune’s catalog eligibility determines whether the device can receive the app, while Power BI’s runtime requirements determine whether it can run correctly.

Confirm the catalog entry

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft Intune admin center.
  2. Open Apps > All apps > Create.
  3. Choose Windows, select Enterprise App Catalog app, and select Select.
  4. Search for the exact product name Microsoft Power BI Desktop.
  5. Confirm the Microsoft publisher and product before continuing.

Microsoft’s catalog list includes Power BI Desktop as of April 16, 2026: Enterprise App Catalog apps. The live catalog in your tenant is authoritative; availability and metadata can change. Do not select Power BI ALM Toolkit, a Power BI service link, a template app, or a Microsoft Store result by mistake.

Create and configure the app

App information

Review the catalog-supplied name, description, publisher, version, category, featured-app setting, information URL, privacy URL, and logo. Values can change with a catalog revision, so treat the current tenant values as the source of truth rather than copying an old screenshot.

Program settings

On Program, retain the catalog’s command-line installer type and Microsoft-provided install and uninstall commands. The exact command is generated for the selected catalog version; copy or leave the command displayed in your tenant rather than hard-coding one in documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Leave the default install behavior unless a documented, tested context requirement exists.
  • Do not force a restart unless the catalog explicitly requires one.
  • Use a custom PowerShell installer only for a specific customization that has been tested on standard-user and administrator scenarios.
  • Review the installation-time limit. A long-running installer can be reported as failed after the timeout even while the process continues on the device.

Microsoft warns that changing catalog commands or replacing them with an incorrect script can break installation and updates. Follow the catalog app configuration guidance.

Requirements

Intune prepopulates requirements for the supported Enterprise Application Management scenario. Review, but do not casually rewrite, the operating-system architecture, minimum operating system, disk space, physical memory, logical-processor count, CPU speed, and any additional rules. Overly restrictive custom rules can mark compatible devices ineligible.

Detection rules

Keep the catalog’s default detection rules unless an alternative has been tested. Detection tells Intune whether Power BI Desktop is installed and whether deployment succeeded. A changed rule can cause repeated installation attempts, a false “not installed” state, failed updates, or an installed application that Intune reports as failed.

Assign the deployment

Assignment Result Best use
Required Intune installs automatically on targeted devices. Pilot and production workstation groups.
Available for enrolled devices The user installs it from Company Portal. Optional self-service deployment.
Uninstall Intune removes it from targeted devices. Controlled retirement or migration.
  1. Assign Required to a small pilot device group.
  2. Test installation, launch, sign-in, and opening a representative .pbix file.
  3. Expand to production groups after validation.
  4. Exclude devices that already have a separately managed installation until your migration plan is complete.

Device targeting is usually clearer for a workstation population. A user-targeted Win32 deployment can fail when installation needs device-administrator privileges that a standard user does not have, so test with the actual user context.

Monitor and verify

In Intune

  • Check app installation status, device and user status, assignment state, last check-in, error code, and detected version where shown.
  • Confirm that the target device received the assignment and has checked in.

On the Windows device

  • Confirm Power BI Desktop appears in installed apps and launches.
  • Check the expected executable and shortcuts.
  • Open a test .pbix file.
  • Test sign-in when Power BI service access is required.
  • Exercise WebView2-dependent screens and any required data connectors.

For an Available assignment

The user should find the app in the Company Portal app or website and select Install. See Install apps on Windows from Company Portal.

Plan updates

Microsoft releases Power BI Desktop monthly and supports only the latest version. Enterprise App Catalog ingestion is not guaranteed to coincide with each Power BI release: Microsoft says most app updates become available within 24 hours, while updates requiring manual testing can take up to seven days. The catalog reduces packaging work but does not guarantee same-day availability.

Enable automatic update behavior for required assignments only after your organization has validated monthly compatibility, governance, and rollback procedures. Test each catalog revision with the pilot group before broad deployment.

Troubleshoot common failures

The app is missing from search

  • Confirm Enterprise Application Management entitlement and administrator access.
  • Search for the full name Microsoft Power BI Desktop.
  • Check whether your cloud environment is supported.
  • Use the live tenant catalog; a web list or screenshot may be older than the current catalog.

Intune reports failure, but Power BI is installed

Check for an installation-timeout condition, then inspect the installed-app state and Intune Management Extension logs. Confirm the catalog detection rule before changing the install command. Microsoft documents that a process can continue after Intune reports a timeout: Enterprise App Catalog deployment guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A standard user cannot install it

Verify the installation context and test with a standard-user device. Prefer a device-targeted Required assignment when the installer needs elevated device privileges.

An existing installation causes conflicts

Inventory Store and manually installed copies before broad assignment. Existing versions can affect detection, upgrade sequencing, file associations, shortcuts, and user-versus-system installation. Decide whether to remove, migrate, or exclude those devices; do not assume every existing copy will upgrade cleanly.

Power BI launches but sign-in or connectors fail

Treat this as a runtime or policy issue rather than proof that Intune installation failed. Check WebView2, proxy and firewall rules, Conditional Access, identity configuration, and connector drivers. Microsoft notes that some SAP connector scenarios require driver files in WindowsSystem32; see Power BI Desktop documentation.

Choose an alternative when the catalog is not the right fit

Method Advantages Trade-offs
Enterprise App Catalog Prepackaged Win32 app with Microsoft-provided commands, requirements, detection, and update-management support. Requires Enterprise Application Management; catalog versions can lag monthly Power BI releases; immediate version pinning is limited.
Microsoft Store Store version receives updates through the Store; Intune can deploy Store apps. Installer context depends on the publisher; available Store Win32 apps may require the user to select Install in Company Portal before management and update handling begin. See Microsoft Store app deployment.
Direct 64-bit executable Useful for a pinned version, custom transforms, scripts, or tenants without Enterprise Application Management. You must package and maintain content, commands, dependencies, detection, updates, and remediation yourself.

Power BI Desktop can be downloaded directly from Microsoft, but installation does not grant Power BI service publishing, sharing, workspace, or collaboration rights. Evaluate those licenses separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Power BI Desktop free?

Microsoft provides the Desktop application as a free download. Power BI service capabilities such as publishing, sharing, and collaboration may require separate licensing.

Does this install Power BI Pro?

No. The Enterprise App Catalog deploys the Windows Power BI Desktop application; it does not assign a Power BI service license.

Can I deploy it to users instead of devices?

Yes, Intune supports user assignments, but test the real user context because a standard user may not have privileges required by a Win32 installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the catalog always contain the newest Power BI version?

No. Power BI releases monthly, while catalog ingestion may take up to seven days for updates that require manual testing. Check the live catalog and validate each revision.

Should I use the Store or Enterprise App Catalog?

Use Enterprise App Catalog for a preconfigured, administrator-controlled Win32 deployment. Choose the Store when Store-based delivery and updates fit your installation-context and governance requirements.

What happens if Power BI Desktop is already installed?

Detection and upgrade behavior can conflict with Store or manually installed copies. Inventory those devices and define a remove, migrate, or exclude strategy before assigning the catalog app.

Can this be used with Autopilot?

The app can be assigned to Intune-managed Windows devices, including devices provisioned through an Autopilot process, provided the tenant entitlement, architecture, requirements, assignments, and installation context are supported and tested.
