Menu names vary by model and software version, and an update appears only after Samsung and your carrier make it available for that specific device.
Install an update from Settings
- Connect your phone to Wi-Fi or mobile data. Download availability and behavior can depend on your carrier and settings.
- Open Settings > Software update. Some devices use a differently named menu, such as System updates.
- Tap Check for updates, Download and install, or the equivalent option shown on your phone.
- If an update is offered, download it and follow the on-screen installation instructions. The phone may restart during installation.
- Before starting, make sure the battery is charged to at least 20%, as Samsung advises.

Choose between the two official update paths

Both methods can install only an update made available for that particular device. Samsung’s update instructions and Smart Switch guidance describe these options.

Install with Smart Switch on a computer
- Install and open Samsung Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the phone to the computer by USB. Some computers may require a USB adapter.
- Allow Smart Switch to detect the phone. Select Update if that option appears, then follow the prompts to download and install.
- Keep the cable connected and do not use the phone until the process completes. The phone will reboot.
If you need another cable to troubleshoot, use one that supports data transfer; a charging-only cable will not provide the required USB connection. Many owners can use a cable they already have. A cable is not needed for the regular wireless update through Settings.

Why an expected One UI update may not appear
One UI releases do not reach every Galaxy phone at the same time, and a particular release is not guaranteed for every model. Availability and features can vary by device, region, carrier, and network. Samsung’s software update information explains that carrier schedules and staged distribution can affect when an update appears. Depending on the model and original carrier, a SIM from that carrier may be required even if the phone is SIM-unlocked.
- Check the carrier’s update information for your exact model.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and check again in Settings > Software update.
- Try Smart Switch on a computer to see whether it detects an available update.
- If the release is still being distributed, check again later. Do not assume a date or version is available without checking for your specific model, sales region, and carrier.
Samsung’s US page described One UI 9 as its latest iteration on October 4, 2026, and named initial devices while noting that more models were expected. That does not establish that every Galaxy model can install One UI 9. Check Samsung or your carrier for the device-specific rollout.

Fix common update problems
The phone says there is not enough storage
Free at least the amount of storage the phone specifies, then try the download again.

The download stops before it finishes
Samsung says a stopped download may be resumed from its notification. If repeated download attempts fail, try Smart Switch on a computer.

Smart Switch does not connect to the phone
- Check for updates to the computer’s software, then restart the computer.
- Confirm the phone’s USB mode allows file transfer.
- Try another USB port or a different data-capable cable, or connect the phone to another computer.
The phone will not start normally after a failed update
Contact Samsung support or service for help. Back up important data before attempting a factory reset or emergency recovery: Samsung warns that these steps can erase data.
