UPI Lite is an opt-in, pre-funded balance in a supported UPI app for small payments. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) sets its ceiling at ₹1,000 per payment and ₹5,000 in total balance. Regular UPI authorizes payments from a linked bank account and supports a wider range of amounts, subject to bank, app and transaction-category rules.

What the limits mean in practice
UPI Lite: ₹1,000 per payment, ₹5,000 total
RBI’s December 4, 2024 circular says: “For UPI Lite, the enhanced limits shall be ₹1,000 per transaction with ₹5,000 being the total limit.” The change took effect immediately. These are regulatory ceilings, not a guarantee that every app or payment route offers the maximum.

Regular UPI: check the transaction and provider
NPCI lists up to ₹1 lakh per transaction for normal UPI, but its FAQ also notes higher limits for select categories. The amount available to you can depend on the transaction type and the rules of your bank and app, so check those limits for the specific payment rather than treating ₹1 lakh as universal.
App limits can be narrower
For example, Google Pay’s UPI Lite guidance describes a ₹5,000 balance cap and a limit of up to ₹1,000 per transaction, while identifying some payment flows as available up to ₹500. Those are Google Pay implementation details, not a limit that applies to every UPI Lite app.

How to set up each option
Set up UPI Lite
- Open a UPI app that supports UPI Lite and choose the option to enable or opt in.
- Select the linked bank account the app offers for Lite.
- Load funds into the Lite balance, following the app’s prompts. You need an online connection to add funds.
The exact menu names and available features depend on the app and bank. Lite is a balance within the app’s payment flow, not a separate bank account.
Set up regular UPI
- Register with a PSP/UPI app and follow its bank-account linking flow.
- Use the mobile number verified in the app that matches the number registered with your bank; NPCI says this matching number is used for account discovery.
- Set up or use your UPI PIN as the app directs. Keep the PIN private: NPCI says it authorizes bank transactions and warns users not to disclose it.
When to use UPI Lite—and when not to
Choose Lite for supported small payments
Lite can suit frequent, low-value payments when you prefer to keep a separately loaded balance and the app and merchant flow support it. Check the app’s specific transaction limit before paying; a payment route may have a lower cap than RBI’s maximum.

Use regular UPI for larger or unsupported payments
Use regular UPI when a payment exceeds Lite’s limit, when you want it authorized directly from the linked account, or when Lite is unavailable for your app, account or merchant flow. For larger payments, confirm the applicable bank and app limit and whether the transaction category has a different ceiling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan UPI Lite work without internet?
NPCI describes UPI Lite as supporting offline debits, but that does not make every part of the service or every payment route fully offline. You need online processing to load the Lite balance and for credits such as refunds. Whether an offline debit works also depends on the app and merchant support.
