Install OBS Studio from its Ubuntu PPA, connect it to a verified YouTube channel with a stream key, and test the complete setup before relying on it. OBS can send a continuous broadcast while your Ubuntu computer and internet connection stay running, but it does not by itself guarantee recovery from power, network, or application failures. For a true 24/7 stream, plan for those failure points—and note that YouTube may not archive a broadcast that runs longer than 12 hours.
Before you install: check Ubuntu and OBS requirements
OBS Project’s Linux installation page, dated 2021-08-26, gives PPA instructions for Ubuntu 18.04 or newer. Treat that as the scope of the published instructions, not a guarantee that the same steps are ideal for every later Ubuntu release. Check the OBS page and your Ubuntu version before installing.

OBS lists an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland among its basic Linux requirements. Meeting those requirements does not guarantee that a particular computer can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate: encoder, scene complexity, and video settings also affect performance. See the OBS system requirements.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio sudo apt install obs-studio -
Follow any prompts from Ubuntu, then launch OBS Studio from the applications menu. If the PPA or package command fails, check the current OBS installation instructions for your exact Ubuntu release rather than assuming the 2021 instructions cover it.
-
On first launch, use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point. Review its suggested output settings and test them with your actual scene and encoder; the wizard is not a substitute for checking stream health.
Prepare YouTube and connect OBS
-
In YouTube Studio, confirm that the channel is eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires a verified channel without live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so complete activation well before the planned broadcast. See the YouTube encoder guide.

In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select a stream and copy its stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the URL and key if OBS presents those fields. Do not share the key: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
-
Set up the scene and sources you want viewers to see. For a prerecorded continuous stream, make sure the video source or playlist is configured to continue playing as intended; preview it in OBS before going live. OBS is also used for live camera, screen, and other sources, but a 24/7 broadcast depends on the selected source remaining available.
-
Start the stream from OBS and check the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s live streaming tips and test with representative motion and audio, not just a static screen.

Choose encoder settings and upload capacity
For standard SDR RTMP or RTMPS streaming, use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate recommendations as the final reference. YouTube specifies H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. The recommended video bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate; there is no single correct bitrate for every stream.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDo not choose a bitrate based only on a speed-test peak. Test the upload connection where the Ubuntu computer will run, at the time it will stream, and account for other devices sharing the connection. YouTube recommends retaining 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate and warns that connectivity disruptions can break a stream. That is general YouTube guidance, not an India-specific broadband guarantee. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Set a suitable resolution and frame rate: use the YouTube recommendations for your target output, and make sure the computer can encode the scene reliably.
- Use CBR and the recommended keyframe interval: set the two-second interval where available; do not exceed four seconds.
- Check audio: use AAC or MP3 and listen to the YouTube preview for clipping, silence, or sync problems.
- Watch stream health: check YouTube Live Control Room during a test for warnings or dropped frames, then adjust settings and retest.
Plan for 24/7 operation—and for the replay
OBS runs on your computer. To keep a local OBS stream going, the computer, OBS process, source media, and network connection at the streaming location must remain operational. The available YouTube and OBS guidance does not establish that OBS will automatically recover from a power cut, lost connection, or application crash. Test the whole chain before leaving it unattended.

- Test startup and login behavior after a reboot, and document how you will restore the stream if OBS or the computer stops.
- Confirm the source keeps playing and that audio and video remain correct over an extended test.
- Check the upload connection under ordinary household or workplace network use, not only when the network is idle.
- Monitor stream health and viewer access. YouTube’s event guidance also recommends previewing, testing failover, checking archive file growth, and monitoring audio and video quality.
A continuous live broadcast is not necessarily a complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. If preserving a recording matters, plan a local recording or an intentional session and restart strategy. Do not rely on the YouTube archive as the only copy of a 24/7 broadcast. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

When local OBS is not the right fit
OBS is a local option when you need control over scenes and sources and can keep the computer and connection running. A cloud service is a different category: uploaded prerecorded videos run in a provider’s cloud instead of on your Ubuntu machine. Before choosing any provider, compare supported platform, stream control, who handles outages, pricing and terms, and archive behavior. YouTube’s encoder guide lists cloud services as an option for 24/7 streaming prerecorded video; that does not establish an endorsement of a particular provider.
