Rocket Lab Signs Record Commercial Electron Deal With Synspective; Backlog Tops 100 Missions

Rocket Lab says a new agreement with Tokyo-based Earth-observation company Synspective covers 20 dedicated Electron launches for its StriX radar satellites. The company calls it the largest commercial Electron contract in Electron’s history and says the deal lifts its launch backlog above 100 missions. The launches are planned annually from 2028 through 2031; the agreement’s financial terms were not disclosed.

What the Synspective deal includes

Announced September 30, 2026, the multi-year agreement is for 20 new Electron missions. Each is a dedicated launch for Synspective’s StriX synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites—not 20 satellites carried on a single flight. Rocket Lab says the agreement brings Synspective’s cumulative Electron mission count to 47, the most of any Rocket Lab customer. Rocket Lab’s announcement does not disclose the contract value or fuller commercial terms.

When and where are the launches planned?

Rocket Lab says the missions are scheduled annually from 2028 through 2031, launching from Launch Complex 1 to sun-synchronous orbit. This is a planned cadence, not a guarantee that every mission will fly on schedule; launch dates and backlogs can change.

Synspective says expanding its StriX constellation is intended to support its goal of imaging any location on Earth within hours, day or night and in any weather. That is the company’s stated objective, not a demonstrated guarantee of coverage or revisit time.

Does this make Rocket Lab’s backlog more than 100?

Yes, according to Rocket Lab: the company says the Synspective agreement takes its overall launch backlog beyond 100 missions. That figure is a company-reported mission count. The September announcement does not provide an independent audit or a dollar value, so it should not be read as more than 100 launches already completed, or as a measure of contract revenue.

How does the deal compare with Rocket Lab’s other contract record?

The “largest” description needs its qualifier. Rocket Lab calls the Synspective agreement its largest commercial Electron launch contract. It is not the largest contract of every kind announced by the company.

On May 7, 2026, Rocket Lab said a confidential customer had booked a combination of dedicated Neutron and Electron launches, describing that company-wide agreement as its largest launch contract at the time. That earlier announcement said the total launch manifest had passed 70 missions. The two announcements describe different records and scopes:

What the announcement does—and does not—establish

The deal gives Synspective a long-range booking plan for dedicated launches and adds 20 missions to Rocket Lab’s reported backlog. Rocket Lab founder and CEO Sir Peter Beck described the booking as confidence in Electron and in the company’s launch cadence, reliability and orbital precision; that is his view in the company announcement, not an independent comparative assessment. Synspective CEO Motoyuki Arai said the launches provide long-term certainty for its constellation expansion, likewise describing the customer’s planning perspective.
