To install several mods on a Conan Exiles dedicated server, place every required .pak file in the server’s ConanSandbox/Mods folder, then create or edit modlist.txt with one mod filename per line in the exact order you want the server to load them. Restart the server, and make sure every player has the same files in the same order. That list is the batch-control file; adding mods one at a time in the game client is not required.

The five-minute method
The procedure is the same in principle on every dedicated-server platform, although the file locations and path format differ:

- Collect the versions of all mods your server will run. Steam servers normally obtain them through Steam Workshop; Epic and Microsoft Store installations use the platform’s documented server folder and path entries.
- Put each mod’s
.pakfile in<dedicated server folder>/ConanSandbox/Mods/(or the platform-specific Windows server Mods directory). - Open or create
modlist.txtin that same Mods directory. - Enter one mod filename per line, with the lines arranged in the intended load order. Do not combine several names on one line.
- Save the file, restart the server, and have clients install or transfer the identical set in the identical order.
Funcom’s technical guidance is explicit: a client joining a modded server must have the same mods, with the same load order. A server can therefore have every file present and still reject a player if the player’s list is different.
What you need before changing the server
- Access to the dedicated-server installation directory and permission to create files there.
- The actual
.pakfiles for every mod, not only Workshop subscriptions or web links. - A planned order for the mods. Keep a written copy of the final order before testing.
- A maintenance window for a full restart. Conan Exiles does not reload a changed
modlist.txtreliably while the process is running. - A backup of the current save and configuration files before a large mod change. This is especially important when removing a mod that added items, buildings, NPCs, or other persistent data.
Use the exact file names supplied by the mod author. Renaming a .pak can make troubleshooting harder and may prevent tools or launchers from recognizing updates.

How modlist.txt controls a multi-mod server
The file is a plain-text list. Each non-empty line identifies one mod. A minimal example looks like this:
CoreBalance.pak
BuildingExpansion.pak
ServerUtilities.pakThe names above are illustrative; use the names of the files actually in your Mods directory. The first line is loaded first, followed by the second, and so on. When two mods change the same assets, the order can affect which changes win, whether assets are overwritten, and whether the server starts cleanly. Follow any order supplied by the mod authors. If none is supplied, introduce a small group of mods at a time and test after each change rather than guessing with a very large list.

Funcom also documents copying a client-generated ConanSandbox/Mods/modlist.txt to the dedicated-server folder. This is useful when a client has already selected the required Workshop mods: the generated file provides a starting list, but you still need to verify that the server has every corresponding .pak file and that the paths are valid for the server platform.
Keep one canonical copy of the list. Do not maintain separate “almost identical” versions for the server, an administrator’s client, and a test machine without recording which one is authoritative.
Steam dedicated server: install several Workshop mods
1. Subscribe and let Steam download each mod
On Steam, subscribe to every required item in the Conan Exiles Steam Workshop. Steam is Funcom’s documented installation route for this platform. Wait for Steam to finish downloading the items before copying files; an incomplete Workshop download can leave a missing or partially written .pak.

2. Locate the downloaded .pak files
Find the local Workshop content for Conan Exiles and identify the .pak file belonging to each subscribed mod. The exact numeric Workshop folders can be difficult to read, so match each file with the mod’s title and author before copying it. If a mod contains more than one package, follow that mod’s installation instructions rather than selecting a file at random.

Copy the required packages into:
<dedicated server folder>/ConanSandbox/Mods/Create the Mods directory if it does not exist. Do not leave the only copy in a player’s Workshop cache: the dedicated server must be able to read its own local files when it starts.
4. Build the list
Create modlist.txt in the server’s Mods directory and put one copied filename on each line. Alternatively, select the mods in the Conan Exiles client and copy the generated ConanSandbox/Mods/modlist.txt into the dedicated-server Mods directory, then check every line against the server’s files.
5. Restart and match clients
Stop the dedicated server cleanly, start it again, and watch its log for missing-file or load errors. Every Steam player should subscribe to the same Workshop items and arrange them in the same order. The server’s list is the reference; a client with an extra mod, a missing mod, or a different order can fail to join even when the game versions match.
Epic Games Store workflow
Funcom’s Epic guidance uses the Windows server Mods directory and a path-based modlist.txt. The process is still a batch operation, but the entries are not necessarily bare filenames.

- Obtain the mod files from a source appropriate to the mod, such as Steam Workshop, Nexus Mods, or the mod author’s site. Check that the release supports the Conan Exiles version and the server platform.
- Place each
.pakin the Windows server’sConanSandbox/Modsdirectory. - Open or create
modlist.txtthere. - Add the documented full path for each
.pak, one path per line. Use the exact path syntax expected by the Epic server build and avoid adding explanatory text after a path. - Save the file and restart the server. Test with an Epic client carrying the same mod set and order.
Because this workflow relies on paths, moving the server installation or changing a drive letter requires you to review every line. A list copied from a Steam client may need editing before it is valid for an Epic installation.
Microsoft Store and Windows dedicated-server workflow
Create the expected directory
Funcom’s Microsoft Store instructions begin by creating a Mods folder beneath the WindowsServer installation’s ConanSandbox directory. The resulting location is conceptually:
<WindowsServer folder>ConanSandboxModsPlace packages and enter full paths
Copy each mod’s .pak into that folder, create modlist.txt, and add the full path to each package on its own line. Full paths make the configuration unambiguous, but they also mean that a moved installation can invalidate the list. Check for typos, drive-letter changes, and accidental quotation marks.
Restart after every list change
Stop and start the Windows server after saving the file. If the server was already running, it may continue using the old configuration until a restart. Confirm that the startup log sees every listed file before asking players to troubleshoot their clients.

Automatic mod transfer: what it can and cannot do
Conan Exiles supports documented server-side mod-download settings, but automatic transfer is platform-dependent. Funcom’s dedicated-server documentation states that Steam clients still use the Steam Workshop API, while Epic Games Store clients can request mod transfer. Microsoft Store documentation adds transfer controls in Engine.ini; some hosting providers may restrict or disable these settings.

These defaults are configuration values, not guaranteed throughput measurements. Raising them can increase network load, and a host may impose its own limits. If a client cannot download a mod automatically, fall back to manual installation and verify the client’s list rather than repeatedly changing unrelated server settings.
Using a launcher or SteamCMD for repeated deployments
Manual copying is transparent and easy to audit, but a launcher can reduce repetitive work when a server has many mods or is updated frequently. Funcom’s documentation for the Conan Exiles Dedicated Server Launcher describes a mod-list field that accepts multiple Workshop IDs or local .pak paths. It also documents SteamCMD deployment and updating of selected mods.
A practical launcher workflow is:
- Install the launcher and its required server components according to its current documentation.
- Enter the required Workshop IDs or local package paths in the launcher’s mod-list field.
- Set the desired order deliberately; do not assume the launcher’s display order is the same as the server’s load order.
- Let the launcher download or update the selected files, then inspect the generated Mods directory and
modlist.txt. - Restart the server and test with a client that has the resulting list.
Launcher behavior and version compatibility can change. Treat it as an automation layer, not as a replacement for checking the actual files and list that the server will read. Keep a manual copy of the final modlist.txt so you can recover if the launcher changes an entry during an update.
Choosing the right installation approach

Verify a multi-mod installation before opening the server
- Compare the list with the directory. Every line must identify a real file in the server’s Mods directory or a valid documented full path for the platform.
- Check the order. Remove duplicate entries and keep dependencies ahead of mods that require them, following author instructions where available.
- Start with a controlled test. Join with an administrator client before announcing the server. Test a character, a commonly used building piece, and at least one feature from each major mod group.
- Read startup output. A missing package, malformed path, or load exception is easier to diagnose before several players connect.
- Record the working state. Save the exact
modlist.txt, game version, and mod versions with the server backup.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server starts but a player cannot join
Compare the player’s enabled mods with the server’s canonical list, including order. An extra client-only mod, a missing dependency, or one package downloaded at a different version can produce a mismatch. Have the player close the game, update or remove the discrepant Workshop item, and rebuild the client list before trying again.
A listed mod is reported missing
Check the spelling and extension in modlist.txt, then confirm the file exists in the exact directory the server uses. On Epic and Microsoft Store configurations, inspect the full path for drive-letter, slash, and folder-name errors. Do not assume that a Workshop subscription placed the file on the dedicated server.
The server loads some mods but not others
Look for a typo, duplicate line, unsupported package version, or an order conflict. Remove the newest mod temporarily, restart, and add changes back in small groups. This isolates the failing package without destroying the known-good list.

Confirm that the platform supports the transfer method you are using. Then check the download port, firewall rules, Engine.ini settings, and host restrictions. The documented Microsoft Store defaults are five simultaneous client connections and 250 Mbps per connection; changing them cannot overcome a blocked port or a provider policy.
An update broke a previously working server
Stop the server, preserve the save and the last known-good list, and compare the new package versions with the previous ones. Workshop content and launcher behavior can change after a game or mod update. Restore the known-good files if the mod author provides a compatible rollback, or test the updated package on a copy of the server before returning it to public use.
Maintenance after installation
- Keep
modlist.txtunder versioned backups with a date and a short change note. - Back up the save before adding, removing, or replacing mods that affect persistent world data.
- Schedule updates rather than allowing a package to change while players are online.
- After a Conan Exiles game update, review every mod for compatibility before restarting the public server.
- After a mod update, verify the filename, dependencies, load order, and client availability.
- Remove obsolete files from the Mods directory so an old package is not accidentally loaded or confused with its replacement.
For a reliable routine, copy the current list, stop the server, update one logical group of mods, start the server, and perform the controlled test. If the test fails, restore the previous list and files before investigating further.
Bottom line for server administrators
Multiple Conan Exiles mods are installed in one batch through the server’s Mods directory and modlist.txt, not by launching a separate installer for every mod. The critical details are one valid entry per line, a deliberate and shared order, a restart after changes, and client files that match exactly. Steam generally uses Workshop distribution; Epic and Microsoft Store servers require their documented folder and path formats; automatic transfer depends on platform, ports, bandwidth settings, and host policy. A launcher can automate downloads and updates, but the files and generated list still need an administrator’s verification.
