What’s actually slowing this PC down?

An ARK mod mismatch means the server and your game are loading different mod content, versions, or load orders. Fix it by updating the dedicated server and every Workshop mod, checking the edition-specific mod settings, restarting the server, and then forcing any affected client to make a clean Workshop download. On ARK: Survival Evolved, verify the numeric IDs in ActiveMods; on ARK: Survival Ascended, use ActiveModOverrides or your host’s Mod IDs field. Do not delete saves until you have a backup.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted ARK: Survival Evolved servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
What a mod mismatch error actually means
ARK is not comparing only the names shown in the server browser. The connecting client must be able to load the same Workshop mods, matching the server’s installed versions and the server’s load order. A mod that is subscribed but outdated, partially downloaded, corrupted, missing from the server, or listed in a different order can produce a version error, a connection refusal, missing creatures or structures, or a world that loads without expected content.

oneSubnet’s server documentation summarizes the requirement as the server having exactly the same mods as clients, in the same order. Its warning is practical: without explicit server-side mod declarations, a player can see version errors, invisible dinosaurs, or a refused connection even when the player has subscribed to the mod.
There is no reliable universal success-rate or repair-time statistic for this problem. The correct remedy depends on which side is stale and whether the failure affects one mod, the entire list, or the saved world.

Identify the failure before changing files
Use the symptom and scope to choose the least destructive repair. Ask the server owner for the current mod list and the edition being run before clearing local files.
| What you observe | Most likely location of the fault | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone is rejected after a mod author update or server maintenance | Server installation or server Workshop cache | Update the dedicated server and every configured mod, then restart it |
| Only one player cannot join while others can | That player’s Workshop cache or subscription | Compare the player’s subscriptions and local mod date with the server list |
| Every mod appears to fail | Server configuration, missing declaration, or a failed update | Check the edition, mod-ID field, configuration syntax, and startup log |
| One mod fails while the rest load | One Workshop item, ID, or incompatible saved-data reference | Update or redownload that item first rather than deleting all mods |
| Files and configuration look correct but the world still rejects the mod | Old save data | Back up the world and player saves, then test whether the mod requires a clean save |
Protect the server and saves first
Stop the server before updating files or editing configuration. Use the normal control panel, service script, or host stop button so the world is flushed cleanly. Copy the complete world and player-save directories to a separate location before testing destructive remedies. Include the configuration files and, if possible, the server’s current mod list.

It is a diagnostic step, not a routine fix. If the server is public, tell players when it is offline and do not let them reconnect while the mod set is changing; mixed client and server states create additional cache and save problems.
Server-owner repair sequence for ARK: Survival Evolved
The following sequence applies to the Steam dedicated-server edition of ARK: Survival Evolved. A managed provider may expose the same settings through a web panel instead of a file editor, and paths can differ on Linux or another operating system.
1. Stop or restart through the supported service method
Stop the process completely before updating. If the control panel offers separate actions for restarting the game and rebooting the machine, use the game-server stop action first and wait until the process and file locks have cleared.
2. Validate the dedicated-server installation
Update the server application itself, not only its mods. SteamCMD documentation for the ARK dedicated server uses app ID 376030 and the validation command below:
app_update 376030 validate
Run it from the SteamCMD session or update script that owns the server installation. Validation can redownload changed or damaged files; allow it to finish before starting the server. If your provider manages SteamCMD, use its repair or validate control rather than running a second copy against the same directory.

3. Update every Workshop mod used by the server
Bring all configured Workshop items to their current server-side files. The official ARK wiki documents the -automanagedmods startup option and the [ModInstaller] section with ModIDS entries. Automatic management can simplify downloads, but it does not replace activation: the server still needs its active-mod list.
Do not update only the mod named in the error if the server has several mods. A dependency or a second item may have changed during the same Workshop update, leaving the list internally inconsistent.
4. Check the Evolved configuration and load order
On a typical Windows dedicated server, open:
ShooterGame/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/GameUserSettings.ini
Your provider or operating system can use a different path. Find the ActiveMods setting and enter numeric Steam Workshop IDs separated by commas, in the order the server should load them. Use no spaces and no trailing comma:
ActiveMods=123456789,234567890,345678901
Replace those example numbers with the actual IDs shown in each Workshop URL or in your provider’s mod list. A title, display name, quotation mark, space-separated list, or trailing comma is not a valid substitute. Keep dependencies ahead of mods that require them when the mod author or server documentation specifies an order.
Check for duplicate IDs, an old ID left behind after a mod migration, and an ID copied from a different edition. Save the file without changing unrelated settings.
5. Start once and read the console or log
Start the server and wait for the complete mod-install and world-load sequence. Look for a successful Mod ... loaded message for each configured ID. Treat Failed to load mod, a missing ID, a download error, or a startup loop as a server-side failure; stop and correct that item before asking players to reconnect.
A browser listing that shows a server online is not proof that all mods loaded. The startup log is the authoritative check for the running process.

6. Reconnect clients only after the restart completes
Tell players to join only after the server has finished updating and has completed a clean restart. If players connect during an update, some can cache an older copy while others receive the new one, making the original mismatch harder to diagnose.
Server-owner repair sequence for ARK: Survival Ascended
ARK: Survival Ascended uses a different configuration approach from Evolved. The managed-server guidance cited by oneSubnet uses ActiveModOverrides or the provider’s dedicated Mod IDs field rather than Evolved’s ActiveMods line.
Use the Ascended mod field, not an Evolved example
Open the provider’s Ascended settings and enter the numeric mod IDs in the field labeled for active mods or mod overrides. If the service exposes a configuration file, use the exact key and syntax documented for that Ascended build. Do not paste an Evolved ActiveMods example into an Ascended server and assume it was accepted.
Verify the resulting startup log
After saving the IDs, restart the server and confirm that every requested item is downloaded and loaded. A provider panel can retain an ID while the actual process fails to load it, so check the live console or log rather than relying only on the saved form.

Confirm the client is running Ascended content
Players must install the matching Ascended edition and its version of each mod. An Evolved Workshop subscription or configuration cannot satisfy an Ascended server’s mod requirement.
Player-side repair sequence
Use these steps when the server owner confirms that the server list and startup log are correct, or when only your account is rejected.
1. Obtain the authoritative mod list
Ask for the server’s current numeric IDs and load order. Subscribe to every listed Workshop item. An unsubscribed client can be blocked during a server-forced download, according to oneSubnet’s troubleshooting guidance.

2. Exit ARK and Steam completely
Leave the server, quit ARK, and exit Steam rather than merely closing the game window. Steam can finish Workshop updates only after the game and its file handles are closed. Reopen Steam and wait for all pending downloads to complete before launching ARK.

3. Repair one affected mod first
If the server identifies one failing item, record its Workshop ID and compare its local update date or version with the server copy. Unsubscribe from that item, close Steam again, and remove its local files under the ARK directory:
ShooterGame/Content/Mods
Delete only the affected mod’s files when you can identify them. Mod files commonly include the numeric ID and a matching .mod file; do not remove unrelated files if you are uncertain which item belongs to the failing ID.
4. Resubscribe and allow a clean download
Start Steam, subscribe to the item again, and wait for the Workshop download and installation to finish. Launch ARK only after Steam shows no pending update. Then join the server and allow any server-consistent download to complete without repeatedly cancelling it.
5. Use a full local mod reset only when necessary
If several items are stale or corrupted, unsubscribe from the server’s affected mods and remove the corresponding files from ShooterGame/Content/Mods. Restart Steam and ARK, resubscribe to every required item, and let the complete set download before reconnecting. A Steam Community report by user ShaZZa (July 1, 2021) describes this clean-redownload approach and says heavily modded servers may require several join attempts. That report is anecdotal: treat repeated attempts as a variable workaround, not a guarantee.
6. Do not keep retrying while a download is active
Repeatedly joining during an incomplete Workshop update can leave the client with a different partial state on each attempt. Wait for the download, restart the game once, and then test again.
When only one mod fails
Isolating one item prevents an unnecessary full reset and makes the log easier to read.
Best Value
- Copy the failing mod’s numeric ID from the server configuration and identify the same ID in your Workshop files.
- Compare the server’s update date or installed version with the client copy.
- Check whether the mod author changed the item, replaced an old Workshop entry, or published a dependency update.
- Update the server copy first, restart it, and then redownload only that client item.
- If the server log loads the item but the world still fails, move to the save-data checks rather than deleting every mod.
A Steam Community user, ShaZZa, attributed some version mismatches to a mod author changing the mod UUID, which changes the mod version. This is a user claim rather than an official diagnosis, but it explains why an apparently unchanged title can require a fresh subscription and why an old Workshop ID may no longer be valid.

A whole-list failure usually points to a declaration, installation, or edition problem rather than dozens of independent corrupted clients.
- Confirm the server is running the edition players installed.
- Verify that the server actually has the mod files, not just IDs saved in a panel.
- Run the dedicated-server validation and complete every Workshop update.
- Check commas, spaces, duplicate IDs, and load order in Evolved’s
ActiveMods, or use Ascended’sActiveModOverridesor Mod IDs field. - Read the first mod-related error in the startup log; later errors can be consequences of that first failure.
- Restart after changing the list. Editing a file while the process is running does not reliably apply the new values.
Save-data and configuration edge cases
Host Havoc Technical Support wrote on June 8, 2026 that when Evolved mods do not load, the cause is almost always one of three things: the files are not installed, ActiveMods is wrong, or old saved data is rejecting them. That ordering is useful because it keeps a destructive save reset as a last resort.
Back up before testing a clean save
Copy the world, player, tribe, and configuration saves before changing them. Keep the backup offline or outside the live server directory so an automated cleanup cannot remove both copies.
Test whether the save is the blocker
With the server files and active-mod setting verified, follow the provider’s documented procedure for creating a temporary test save or moving the old save aside. Start with the required mods and check whether they load in the clean test world. If they do, the original save has a compatibility or historical reference problem.
Choose between migration and reset
A clean save may restore mod loading but at the cost of progression. Restore the backup and seek a mod-specific migration procedure when the world contains irreplaceable structures or characters. Reset only when the loss is acceptable and the backup has been tested.
Self-hosted versus managed servers
| Environment | Where to perform the fix | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Self-hosted Windows Evolved | SteamCMD, the server’s Workshop directory, and GameUserSettings.ini |
app_update 376030 validate, installed mod files, numeric ActiveMods, and startup log |
| Self-hosted Linux or another operating system | Your SteamCMD script and the equivalent Saved/Config path | Correct path and permissions, update completion, active IDs, and log output |
| Managed Evolved server | Provider update/reinstall controls and its configuration editor | Whether automatic mod management is enabled, the exact active-ID field, and the live console |
| Managed Ascended server | Provider’s Ascended Mod IDs field or ActiveModOverrides |
That the Ascended-specific setting is applied after restart and every ID loads |
Managed panels can hide the underlying file path, and a panel’s saved value can differ from the process command line. Ask support for the generated startup arguments or log excerpt if the visible settings appear correct but the server still reports a mismatch.
Common mistakes that make the problem worse
- Updating only the client: a newer local Workshop file cannot make an old server copy compatible.
- Updating only the server process: validating app ID 376030 does not automatically repair every Workshop item.
- Using names instead of IDs:
ActiveModsrequires numeric Workshop IDs. - Adding spaces or a trailing comma: strict parsers can ignore or misread the list.
- Using the wrong edition’s setting: Evolved’s
ActiveModsexample does not configure Ascended. - Editing while the server is running: the process may overwrite your change or continue using the old value.
- Deleting all files immediately: you lose a chance to isolate one bad item and increase download time.
- Resetting saves without a backup: a mod-loading issue can become permanent progression loss.
- Trusting the browser listing alone: only the startup log proves that each requested mod loaded.
- Letting players join during maintenance: clients can cache different generations of the mod set.
Prevent future mismatches
Keep a dated record of the server’s numeric IDs and intended order. When changing a mod, schedule a maintenance window, stop the server, update the dedicated installation and Workshop items, inspect the log, and announce the restart only after all IDs report loaded. Ask regular players to let Steam finish Workshop updates before launching ARK.
For a heavily modded server, preserve the last known-good configuration and a backup of the world before each mod change. If a new Workshop release breaks the world, restoring the known-good files and save is safer than repeatedly deleting client data. Document whether the server is Evolved or Ascended so players do not follow the wrong configuration instructions.
