Craft an anvil from three iron blocks and four iron ingots, then use it to repair equipment, combine compatible enchantments, and rename items while keeping their enchantments. Put the item you want to keep in the left slot, place a repair material, matching item, or enchanted book in the right slot, check the experience cost, and take the result only when the displayed outcome is acceptable. Plan repeated work carefully: Survival refuses operations costing more than 39 levels, and every use has a 12% chance to damage the anvil.

What an anvil does

An anvil is Minecraft’s experience-powered workstation for preserving and improving gear. Its three main jobs are:

  • Repairing durability: use the item’s accepted repair material or combine it with another item of the same type.
  • Combining enchantments: apply an applicable enchanted book or a compatible identical item to the target.
  • Renaming: enter a custom name in the anvil’s name field.

Unlike a grindstone, an anvil keeps enchantments when it repairs an item and can add enchantments from books. It is therefore the appropriate station when the enchantments matter as much as the remaining durability.

Materials and the exact crafting recipe

You need seven iron units in two forms: three iron blocks and four individual iron ingots. In a crafting table, arrange them as follows:

Grid position Place
Top row, all three slots Iron block, iron block, iron block
Middle row, center slot Iron ingot
Bottom row, all three slots Iron ingot, iron ingot, iron ingot

The completed anvil appears in the output slot. Collect it and place it where you can safely access it. Because the recipe consumes three blocks, remember that each block represents nine ingots when planning your iron supply.

Place an anvil safely

Anvils are gravity-affected blocks. If there is no supporting block beneath one, it falls, and a falling anvil can injure entities below. The official Minecraft explanation reports damage of up to 40 blocks, or 20 hearts; a helmet reduces falling-anvil damage by 25 percent.

  • Put the anvil on a solid supporting block before opening its interface.
  • Do not stand underneath it while removing the support.
  • Block off the drop area in multiplayer builds so another player or a mob cannot walk into it.
  • If you are deliberately dropping one, make sure the landing area is clear and that the anvil will not damage a valuable entity.

Basic interface workflow

The same sequence handles repair, enchantment work, and renaming. Edition-specific costs and compatibility can vary, so read the result shown in your own game rather than relying on a fixed number from another version.

  1. Open the anvil. Interact with the safely placed block to open its interface.
  2. Put the item to keep in the first slot. This is the left slot in the usual interface. Its type, durability, enchantments, and prior-work history determine what can be done.
  3. Put the second ingredient in the right slot. Use an accepted repair material, a second item of the same type, or an applicable enchanted book.
  4. Read the output preview. Check the repaired durability, enchantment list, custom name, and experience-level cost before clicking the result.
  5. Rename if useful. Enter a name in the name field during the same operation whenever practical; this avoids adding a separate prior-work operation.
  6. Take the output only after checking it. The operation consumes the ingredients and charges the displayed experience cost.

Repair damaged items

Repair with the item’s material

Place the damaged item first and its accepted repair material second. The material category depends on the item. The official examples include iron ingots for iron equipment, phantom membranes for an elytra, and turtle scutes for a turtle shell.

Each unit of an accepted material repairs 25 percent of the item’s maximum durability, with the final amount rounded according to the game’s repair rules. The interface shows the resulting durability and level cost before you commit, so add only as many units as are useful for the operation.

Target Example repair material What to check
Iron tool or armor piece Iron ingot That the item is an iron type accepted by the anvil
Elytra Phantom membrane The displayed durability increase and experience cost
Turtle shell Turtle scute That the shell, rather than another helmet, is in the first slot

These examples illustrate the material rule; not every item accepts every ingot or drop. If the output slot remains empty, remove the material and verify that it matches the target’s repair category.

Combine two identical items

You can also put a second item of the same type in the right slot. The anvil combines their durability according to Minecraft’s repair rules and can merge their enchantments when those enchantments are compatible. This is often preferable when you have a second enchanted tool but no convenient repair material.

Use the item with the enchantments or custom name you want to retain as the first-slot target, then inspect the preview. The result is not simply the arithmetic sum of two durability bars: the game applies its own combination calculation and displays the final value before you accept it.

Why an anvil is different from a grindstone

A grindstone is useful when you want to remove enchantments and receive the associated experience, but it is the wrong choice for preserving a carefully built enchanted item. An anvil repairs while retaining applicable enchantments and can add new ones from books. Choose the station based on whether the priority is a clean, reset item or a maintained and upgraded one.

Combine enchantments without losing the target

Use an enchanted book

Place the gear you want to keep in the first slot and an applicable enchanted book in the second. The result preserves the target and adds compatible enchantments from the book. Incompatible enchantments are not added; the preview is the authoritative indication of what will carry over.

Microsoft’s Bedrock documentation describes the same basic operation with either an enchanted book or another identical item carrying a different enchantment. The result carries both applicable enchantments, subject to the normal compatibility rules and the maximum level allowed in Survival.

Raise equal enchantment levels

When two compatible enchantments have the same level, combining them can produce the next level. For example, two copies of the same level can advance to the following level when that level exists within the Survival cap. Combining unequal levels generally keeps the higher level rather than creating an additional level. Always verify the output because compatibility, the item type, and the edition determine the actual result.

Plan the order of book combinations

Every completed anvil operation contributes to the item’s prior-work history. Applying many books one at a time to the final item can make a later operation unaffordable even when each individual book looked inexpensive. A practical approach is to combine compatible books with one another first, then apply the resulting books to the item in a planned sequence. Keep the number of operations balanced and inspect the cost after each step.

Renaming and the prior-work penalty

Renaming initially costs one experience level. That is the base rename component for an item without earlier anvil work; the total shown by the interface can be higher once repair, enchantment, or prior-work costs are included.

An item becomes more expensive to rework as it passes through the anvil. Minecraft’s official guidance therefore recommends renaming at the same time as repairing or enchanting whenever practical. Enter the desired name before taking the output so the rename is part of an operation you were already going to perform.

Renaming does not itself repair durability or add an enchantment. It changes the displayed name while consuming the operation’s total experience cost and increasing the item’s future prior-work burden.

Understanding and avoiding Too Expensive!

The anvil’s displayed cost includes the work being done now plus accumulated factors from previous operations. Relevant components include:

  • The enchantments being added or combined.
  • The repair work and the amount of durability restored.
  • The rename component.
  • The item’s prior-work penalty from earlier anvil operations.

The Minecraft Wiki documents a Survival refusal threshold above 39 levels. In practical terms, an operation displayed at 40 levels or more is refused with Too Expensive!, so the output cannot be taken in Survival. Exact prices depend on the enchantments, item history, edition, and game version; there is no single universal cost for a particular named combination.

A cost-conscious workflow

  1. Start with a fresh item whenever possible.
  2. Gather all books and decide the final enchantment set before using the anvil.
  3. Combine compatible books with each other instead of repeatedly adding one book to the final item.
  4. Use a second matching item for a repair-and-merge operation when that is cheaper than many material repairs.
  5. Rename during an existing repair or enchantment operation, not as a separate late step.
  6. After every operation, read the next displayed cost. If it is approaching the Survival limit, change the order rather than spending levels blindly.

There is no reliable fixed table of level prices that applies to every world. Two items with the same visible enchantments can have different costs because their prior-work histories differ.

Anvil wear, damage states, and expected lifespan

Each anvil use has a 12 percent chance to damage the block. Damage progresses through three stages; after the third damage step, the anvil breaks. Because the chance is random, the official estimate is about 25 uses on average, not a guarantee. One anvil may survive fewer operations and another may last longer.

Edition terminology Damage labels
Java Edition Chipped Anvil, then Damaged Anvil
Bedrock Edition Slightly Damaged Anvil, then Very Damaged Anvil

The names identify the visible degradation states; they do not change the basic purpose of the workstation. Keep spare iron available if an anvil is part of a long enchanting project, particularly when you are making many book combinations.

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition differences

The core recipe and the left-slot/right-slot workflow are shared, but costs, compatibility details, and some mechanics can vary by edition and game version. The clearest visible difference is the damage-state terminology listed above. A numeric cost example should therefore identify its edition and version rather than being presented as a rule for every platform.

When a tutorial says that a combination costs a certain number of levels, confirm that it was made on the same edition and a comparable version. The interface’s current preview takes precedence over an older video or guide.

Anvil versus other repair methods

Choosing a repair station depends on what you need to preserve and what resources you can spend.

Method Enchantment preservation Add enchantments? Material cost Experience cost Typical durability result
Anvil with repair material Preserves the target’s applicable enchantments Yes, with compatible books or items Consumes the accepted repair material Displayed level cost; rises with work and prior-use history Each material unit repairs 25% of maximum durability, subject to rounding
Anvil with an identical item Can preserve and merge compatible enchantments Yes, when the second item supplies compatible enchantments Consumes the second item Displayed level cost Combines durability under the game’s item-combination rules
Grindstone Does not preserve ordinary applied enchantments No No anvil repair material Returns experience from removed enchantments rather than charging an anvil operation Useful for removing enchantments and combining compatible items in its own limited role
Crafting-table combination Not suitable for preserving an enchanted build No Uses a second matching item No anvil level charge Basic item combination, with enchantment loss making it unsuitable for prized gear

The exact behavior of repair stations can receive edition or version changes, so use the output preview and current game documentation when a particular edge case matters.

Worked workflows

Repair an iron pickaxe and give it a name

  1. Place the damaged iron pickaxe in the first slot.
  2. Place one or more iron ingots in the second slot.
  3. Enter the custom name while the preview is open.
  4. Check the new durability and total level cost.
  5. Take the output only if the restored durability and name are worth the materials and experience.

Each ingot contributes a quarter of the pickaxe’s maximum durability before the game’s rounding rules are applied. If the pickaxe also needs enchantments, add an applicable book in a separate, planned operation or combine books first to reduce repeated prior-work penalties.

Repair an elytra

  1. Put the damaged elytra in the first slot.
  2. Use phantom membranes in the second slot.
  3. Read the durability increase and level cost.
  4. Rename it during this operation if desired, then take the result.

Do not substitute a generic ingot: phantom membrane is the documented example of the accepted repair material for an elytra.

Build an enchanted tool from books

  1. List the compatible enchantments you want and identify any combinations that would exceed the Survival maximum.
  2. Combine compatible books with one another where possible.
  3. Put the tool in the first slot and the prepared book in the second.
  4. Inspect which enchantments appear in the output and note the level cost.
  5. Rename during a repair or enchantment operation rather than adding a final standalone rename.

If the output says Too Expensive!, do not keep applying books to that same item. Return to the last affordable stage, combine books in a different order, or start with a less-worked item.

Troubleshooting an anvil operation

The output slot is empty

  • Confirm that the first item is damaged or otherwise eligible for the selected operation.
  • Check that the second item is the exact repair material category accepted by the target.
  • For enchantment work, verify that the book applies to that item and is not incompatible with an enchantment already present.
  • When combining items, make sure they are the same item type rather than merely sharing a material.

The cost is higher than expected

  • Look for prior anvil work on the target or the book.
  • Remove unnecessary renames from the plan and combine several books before applying them to the item.
  • Compare the preview after each planned operation; the game’s displayed number includes factors that are not obvious from the item’s name.

The game displays Too Expensive!

Survival will not accept an operation above the documented 39-level threshold. Reorder the enchantment combinations, use fewer intermediate operations, or begin with a fresh item. The anvil cannot be persuaded to accept an over-limit operation simply by having more experience stored in your bar.

The anvil changed appearance

That is normal wear. A 12 percent damage chance applies to each use, and the block can pass through three damage stages before breaking. The labels differ between Java and Bedrock, but the degradation is expected random behavior rather than a repair error.

Practical checklist

  • Have three iron blocks and four iron ingots for the initial craft.
  • Place the anvil on a supported block and keep the area below it clear.
  • Put the item you want to keep in the first slot.
  • Use the correct repair material, matching item, or applicable enchanted book in the second slot.
  • Read the output durability, enchantments, name, and level cost.
  • Rename during repair or enchanting when possible.
  • Combine books strategically to avoid the accumulated prior-work penalty.
  • Stop and redesign the plan if the displayed cost is 40 levels or more in Survival.
  • Expect random wear: three damage steps can destroy an anvil, with about 25 uses as the official average.
