Install the official Enshrouded Dedicated Server through Steam’s Tools filter, launch its executable once to create enshrouded_server.json, then add the community Enshrouded Mod Loader (EML) beside the executable. EML uses dbghelp.dll in the server root and a neighboring mods folder, with each mod kept in its own subfolder. Because Enshrouded has no official Workshop or dedicated-server mod framework documented here, every loader and mod must be treated as community software: match versions, back up first, and check whether players also need client files.

What you need before installing anything
There are two different layers to a modded Enshrouded server. The first is Keen Games’ official dedicated-server program and its supported JSON settings. The second is a community loader and community-made modifications. Keeping those layers separate makes installation and troubleshooting much easier.

- A Windows machine or Windows server for the official dedicated-server installation described by Keen Games. Linux support was described as planned rather than generally available in the installation guidance used for this procedure.
- A Steam account with access to the Enshrouded Dedicated Server tool.
- File-system access to the directory where the server is installed.
- A current EML release that explicitly matches your Enshrouded game and server build.
- A complete copy of the server directory and save files before adding any community DLL or mod.
- The installation notes for every individual mod you intend to use, including its EML or
dbghelp.dllrequirement and any client-side files.
Do not assume that a mod made for the current game client will work with an older dedicated-server build. Loader compatibility is a separate question from whether the game itself launches.
Install the official dedicated server
Find the server in Steam
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Enable the Tools filter. The dedicated server is listed as a tool rather than as the normal playable game entry.
- Select Enshrouded Dedicated Server and install it.
- After installation, open the tool’s installed-files location. The exact folder depends on the Steam library you selected, so use Steam’s file-location command instead of guessing a path.
Keen Games’ installation guidance recommends running the server executable directly from its installed folder. Do not rely on Steam’s ordinary Launch button if the official instructions for your build tell you to start the executable itself.

Run it once to generate the configuration
- In the installed server directory, locate
Enshrouded Dedicated Server.exe. - Run the executable directly.
- Wait for the initial startup to complete, then stop the server cleanly.
- Confirm that the first run created
enshrouded_server.jsonin the server directory.
The first launch is important even if you plan to use mods. It creates the official configuration file and establishes a known-good baseline. Start the unmodified server and verify that it reaches its normal online state before introducing EML.
Back up the baseline
Stop the process before copying files. Back up the entire server directory and the world/save data to a separate location. Also keep a text record of the original game/server build and the date of the backup. If a loader update or game patch prevents startup, you can restore the clean directory rather than trying to diagnose several changes at once.

Keep a copy of any custom settings before deleting the file, because regeneration returns the file to defaults.
Understand the unofficial mod path
The researched Enshrouded documentation does not describe an official Workshop, plugin API, or dedicated-server mod framework. The practical community route is Enshrouded Mod Loader (EML). EML is not a Keen Games feature and is not covered by an official compatibility guarantee. A game update can therefore break the loader, an individual mod, or both.

Use the loader release and mod release notes as part of the installation instructions. Download only releases that identify EML or dbghelp.dll as a requirement and that list compatibility with the game/server build you are actually running. If a release page does not state compatibility, treat that omission as a reason to wait or test it on a disposable copy rather than installing it on your live world.
Install EML on the server
Place the loader DLL in the server root
- Stop the dedicated server.
- Open the folder containing
Enshrouded Dedicated Server.exe. - Copy the EML-provided
dbghelp.dllinto that same folder, beside the executable. - Do not put the DLL in the Steam game client’s directory unless the EML documentation specifically requires a client installation. The dedicated-server copy and the playable game copy are separate installations.
The placement matters because the loader is discovered from the executable’s directory. A DLL left in a parent folder, a different Steam library, or a client-only folder will not load the dedicated server.
Create the mods directory
- In the same server directory, create a folder named
mods. - Inside
mods, create one subfolder for each mod. - Keep each mod’s own
mod.jsonin its corresponding subfolder, along with the other files supplied by that mod.
The resulting layout should look like this:

(other ModTwo files)Do not flatten every mod’s files directly into mods. Separate subfolders make it possible to identify, disable, and remove one mod without disturbing the others.
Add one mod first
For the first test, install only one known-compatible mod. Start the server and confirm that it reaches its normal online state before adding another. This staged approach gives you a clear cause if the server fails and avoids confusing a loader problem with a mod conflict.

Decide whether a mod belongs on clients
There is no universal “install it only on the server” rule. Each mod’s description and release notes determine the requirement.

Before inviting friends, write down whether each mod is server-only or client-required. Send players the exact release and installation location named by the mod author. Do not make them guess which files are needed, and do not assume that having dbghelp.dll on the server automatically installs anything on a client.

Many server-hosting needs are already exposed in enshrouded_server.json. Keen Games documents gameplay presets and other server settings in that file. If your goal is a supported difficulty, loot, or gameplay adjustment, change the documented JSON setting rather than adding a DLL-based patch.

Change one setting or install one mod at a time. Preserve the known-good JSON and save backup so you can tell whether a problem came from configuration, the loader, or a particular mod.

Start, verify, and monitor the modded server
- Close any running server process.
- Check that
dbghelp.dllis besideEnshrouded Dedicated Server.exe. - Check that
modsis beside the DLL, not nested inside another folder. - Open each mod subfolder and confirm that its required
mod.jsonis present. - Start the executable directly.
- Wait for the server to reach its normal online state and inspect the server output or log for loader and mod errors.
- Connect with a test character before announcing the server to everyone.
Record the exact EML release, each mod version, the game/server build, and any client files distributed to players. That inventory turns a future update into a controlled comparison instead of a guessing exercise.
Troubleshoot a server that will not start
The server exits immediately after adding EML
- Stop the process and remove
dbghelp.dlltemporarily. - Start the clean server copy. If it now works, the loader release is incompatible with the current game/server build or was placed in the wrong directory.
- Restore the DLL only after obtaining an EML release that explicitly matches the build.
The server starts without mods but fails after adding one
- Remove the newest mod subfolder and start the server again.
- Check that the mod’s
mod.jsonis intact and that the folder name and nesting match the author’s instructions. - Read the release notes for required EML versions, required game builds, dependencies, and known conflicts.
- Test that mod alone before combining it with others.
The server runs, but a feature is missing
- Confirm that the mod is in its own direct child folder under
mods. - Confirm that the server was restarted after copying the files.
- Check logs for a load error rather than assuming the mod is active.
- Verify whether the feature requires client files; a server-only installation cannot supply a client asset or interface change.
Players cannot join after an update
- Compare the server game build, EML release, mod releases, and client files.
- Ask every player to use the exact client version required by the mod author.
- Remove the most recently updated mod and test a clean server.
- Re-add components one at a time after the unmodded server is confirmed working.
A game update can invalidate a previously working loader without any change on your side. Treat updates as compatibility events: back up first, update one component, test, and only then update the next.

Use a change log
Keep a simple file listing the date, game/server build, EML release, every mod version, and whether each mod requires clients. Include the order in which files were installed. When something breaks, this log identifies the last known-good combination.
Maintain clean and modded copies
A clean backup contains the official executable, the original configuration, and saves without EML or community files. A modded backup contains the tested DLL, mod folders, and the matching configuration. Never overwrite the clean copy with an untested update.

Update in a controlled order
- Back up saves, the server directory, and
enshrouded_server.json. - Read the game update notes and each loader/mod release note.
- Test the official server without community files.
- Install the compatible EML release and test.
- Add or update one mod and test.
- Distribute matching client files only after the server test succeeds.
This order isolates failures and limits the time your shared world is unavailable.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct control of the executable, JSON file, DLL, mod folders, backups, and update timing. It also requires a reachable network path. Carrier-grade NAT, blocked inbound connections, or a router that cannot forward the required traffic can prevent friends from connecting even when the server works locally.
Managed Enshrouded hosting is a fallback when you cannot expose a self-hosted machine. Before choosing a provider, verify the controls that matter for mods rather than assuming every plan supports them.

Ask a managed host specifically whether you can upload a DLL, create per-mod subfolders, edit enshrouded_server.json, view logs, restore backups, and control update timing. A host that hides those functions may be unsuitable for EML even if it advertises Enshrouded support.

What to expect from unofficial mod support
EML can extend a dedicated server beyond the options exposed in the official JSON file, but it changes your maintenance responsibilities. There is no documented Keen Games guarantee for this path in the material used here. A future game update may require a new loader, a rebuilt mod, matching client files, or a temporary return to the clean server.
