What BEC does on a DayZ server
BattlEye Extended Controls (BEC) is a third-party automated RCon utility. It can authenticate to a BattlEye-enabled DayZ server, issue administrative commands, read administrator and command definitions, write chat or event messages, and run scheduled actions such as restart warnings. The project README says BEC was originally created for ArmA 2 and ArmA 3 and continues to work with DayZ Standalone because the BattlEye RCon protocol has not changed substantially. That is maintainer documentation, not a compatibility guarantee from Bohemia Interactive, so test every function against the current DayZ server build and your host’s policy.

BEC does not replace the DayZ dedicated server, BattlEye, or the hosting control panel. It is an RCon client that must be able to reach the BattlEye RCon listener. If the server is not running BattlEye, if the port is wrong, or if BEC points to an inactive BattlEye folder, the executable may start while performing no useful administration.
Prerequisites and the correct file locations
- A DayZ dedicated server that has been started at least once with BattlEye enabled.
- Access to the server’s active BattlEye directory and permission to create or edit files there.
- A free TCP port for BattlEye RCon that is different from every DayZ game-server port.
- A strong, unique RCon password that is not reused for the control panel, operating-system account, or another DayZ instance.
- The BEC files copied to a directory you control, with its
Configsubdirectory and the BEC executable. - Firewall and provider rules that allow the chosen RCon connection. For a same-machine installation, loopback access is normally sufficient.
Start the DayZ server once before editing paths. The first launch creates or activates the BattlEye directory that the instance actually uses. Bohemia Interactive’s server-configuration material identifies this area as the location for BattlEye files, logs, and RCon-related files. Do not assume that a folder with a similar name is active; a copied directory from an old installation can contain plausible files while the server reads another location.

Understand the ports and paths before changing anything

The maintained BEC example describes using the game port plus three as a convenient pattern; with a default game port of 2302, it uses 2305. That is only a recommendation. Check your machine, host, and network layout for an unused port before adopting it.
Step 1: Create the BattlEye RCon configuration
Find the active BattlEye directory
Launch the DayZ server and inspect its startup output and file tree for the BattlEye directory that receives current logs. If your provider exposes a separate configuration and log path, use the path associated with the running instance rather than a local BEC folder. Stop the server before editing the file if your host locks configuration files while the process is running.

In that active BattlEye directory, create BEServer_x64.cfg and add the two required directives:
RConPort 2305
RConPassword change-this-to-a-long-unique-secretBattlEye documentation marks both RConPort and RConPassword as required. Replace the example password with a long random secret; it is shown only to illustrate the syntax. Keep the port separate from all DayZ game ports. If several DayZ instances share a machine, assign each instance a different RCon port and password, and keep each BEC process paired with its own BattlEye directory.
Save the file using the exact filename and spelling. A configuration saved as BEServer_x64.cfg.txt, or placed in a BattlEye directory that the server does not read, will appear to have no effect.

Step 2: Configure BEC’s Config.cfg
Copy the BEC distribution to a dedicated folder on the server. Edit Config/Config.cfg and use the maintained example as a starting point:

Ip = 127.0.0.1is appropriate when BEC runs on the same host as DayZ. For a remote BEC host, use the intentionally configured server address and permit only the required source through the firewall.Port = 2305must be identical toRConPort 2305inBEServer_x64.cfg. If you select another free port, change both files.BePathmust be the full path to the active BattlEye directory for this server. The BEC README explicitly warns that this path must match the Battleye directory; a similarly named backup or template folder is not sufficient.
Set the supporting files
Admins = Admins.xml, Commands = Commands.xml, and Scheduler = Scheduler.xml tell BEC which administration, command, and schedule files to load. Keep those files in the expected BEC configuration location, or replace the values with valid paths that your installation uses. The filenames are case-sensitive on some hosts and should be kept consistent with the files on disk.
The example also exposes optional controls such as AutoLoadBans, KickLobbyIdlers, ChatChannelFiles, SlotLimit, and Timeout. Enable optional controls one at a time and record the policy effect. A short timeout can make a remote connection fail during transient network delay; a larger value can make a dead connection take longer to report. Do not enable automated enforcement until basic RCon authentication is confirmed.
Step 3: Prepare BEC’s companion files
Admins.xml and Commands.xml
Use the BEC distribution’s expected administrator and command files, then grant only the permissions that your staff needs. Keep an offline backup before changing access rules. Start with a small administrator group and a limited command set; broad permissions make a typo or compromised credential more damaging.
Scheduler.xml
Create or edit the scheduler file named by Config.cfg. The project README’s sample includes timed messages and restart-related actions, but those sample times are not a universal DayZ schedule. Replace them with the times, warning intervals, timezone, and maintenance window used by your server. Confirm the host’s timezone rather than assuming it matches your own computer.

bans.txt
If BEC reports that a bans file is missing, create bans.txt in the active BattlEye directory as described by the BEC README. Ensure BEC has permission to read and write it. A missing or inaccessible file can prevent normal startup even when the RCon port and password are correct.
Step 4: Start BEC in the required mode
Open a command prompt in the BEC directory and launch it with the flags shown in the project README:

start "BEC" Bec.exe -f Config.cfg --dscThe -f Config.cfg argument selects the configuration file, and --dsc is required by the documented launch method. You can place those commands in a dedicated batch file or call them from an integrated server-start script. Start DayZ first so BattlEye is listening, then start BEC; otherwise BEC may log a connection failure before the server is ready.
Watch the BEC log and the DayZ/BattlEye console. Look for an authenticated RCon connection before allowing the scheduler to issue kicks, bans, shutdowns, or restart warnings. A process that remains open is not proof of success; the connection and authentication messages are the meaningful test.

BEC’s scheduler can broadcast advance warnings and trigger shutdown-related tasks. A practical maintenance sequence is to notify players, repeat the warning at shorter intervals, stop accepting new activity according to your server policy, and then perform the restart through the mechanism your host supports. The exact XML entries depend on the BEC version and its sample file, so preserve the syntax supplied with your distribution rather than inventing element names.

- Use the server’s actual timezone and daylight-saving behavior.
- Choose times that do not collide with provider backups, updates, or other instances on the machine.
- Test a message-only schedule first. Add the shutdown or restart action only after messages appear at the expected times.
- Keep a manual recovery path through the provider panel or service manager in case BEC stops or the schedule is malformed.
- Document who receives the warning, how long players have, and whether a restart preserves the expected server state.
Do not copy a repository’s sample noon or midnight schedule without checking its timezone and your hosting policy. A control panel’s own restart scheduler may be more reliable than BEC for process supervision; in that arrangement, use BEC for warnings and administration while the panel performs the restart, unless your provider documents another supported design.

BEC cannot connect
- Confirm DayZ is running with BattlEye enabled and that the active BattlEye directory contains current logs.
- Compare
Portin BEC withRConPortinBEServer_x64.cfgcharacter for character. - Check that the chosen port is not occupied by a game instance or another service.
- Verify the password and remove stray spaces or quotation marks not required by the file format.
- For a remote installation, check firewall, provider ACL, NAT, and routing rules. For a local installation, test with
127.0.0.1and avoid exposing RCon publicly.
BEC connects to the wrong server or appears to do nothing
This usually indicates a path or instance mix-up. Recheck BePath against the directory receiving the current server’s BattlEye logs. Multiple DayZ instances should have separate BEC folders or clearly separated configuration files, unique RCon ports, unique passwords, and their own scheduler and administration files. Stop duplicate BEC processes before testing again.
The executable starts and immediately exits
Run it from its own directory so relative paths resolve correctly, and include both -f Config.cfg and --dsc. Inspect the BEC log for a missing configuration, malformed setting, inaccessible companion file, or missing bans.txt. Correct one error at a time and relaunch rather than changing every setting simultaneously.
Administration commands fail after a successful connection
Check the administrator and command definitions, then check whether the server is on a public hive. A working RCon session does not override Bohemia Interactive’s hive restrictions. Test with a harmless command and review both BEC and BattlEye logs before attempting enforcement.
Scheduled messages do not appear
Confirm that Scheduler.xml is named correctly in Config.cfg, is in the expected location, and contains times in the host’s timezone. Verify that BEC was restarted after editing the file. Test one near-future message before adding a full restart sequence.
Public-hive restrictions and restart limits
Bohemia Interactive’s public-hive rules state that “Several BEC/Rcon functions are restricted on Public Hive servers.” The cited version 12.18 rules list restrictions on the following functions:

The same rules limit restart behavior to no more than five restarts per day and prohibit restarting for loot farming or character-integrity protection. Those limits are policy requirements, not a technical setting that BEC can safely bypass. Verify the current Bohemia Interactive rules and your game-server provider’s terms before enabling automated enforcement or restarts. Private-hive servers may have different permissions, but they still remain subject to provider and game rules.
Choose a deployment model

Regardless of the model, keep the active BePath, BEC Port, and BattlEye RConPort aligned. Those three values are the foundation of a predictable deployment.
Operational security and maintenance
- Use a unique RCon password for every instance and store it in restricted configuration files.
- Do not expose RCon to the entire internet when loopback or a narrow firewall allow-list is possible.
- Back up
BEServer_x64.cfg, BEC configuration, administrator and command files, scheduler definitions, and bans data before edits. - Keep BEC logs long enough to investigate an accidental kick, ban, or restart.
- After a DayZ update, confirm that the active BattlEye directory and RCon behavior have not changed before restarting automated actions.
- Change one setting at a time and record the previous value, especially for optional controls such as idle kicking, slot limits, and automatic ban loading.
- Periodically test manual recovery: stop BEC, stop the scheduler, and confirm that staff can still use the provider panel or another approved administration method.
Final validation checklist
- Start DayZ with BattlEye enabled and verify that it creates or uses the expected active BattlEye directory.
- Confirm that
BEServer_x64.cfgcontains a uniqueRConPortandRConPassword, and that the port differs from every game-server port. - Set BEC’s
Portto the exact same number asRConPort. - Set
BePathto the directory receiving logs for this running instance. - Place or correctly reference
Admins.xml,Commands.xml, andScheduler.xml. - Create
bans.txtin the active BattlEye directory if BEC reports that it is required. - Launch BEC from its own directory with
-f Config.cfg --dsc. - Read the BEC and DayZ/BattlEye logs for a successful authenticated connection.
- Test a harmless administrative action and a message-only scheduler entry.
- Only then enable kicks, bans, automatic enforcement, or restart actions, after checking public-hive and provider rules.
Once these checks pass, BEC has a correctly scoped RCon connection and a documented operating path. Keep the configuration backed up, monitor its logs, and revisit the hive rules whenever Bohemia Interactive or your host updates its policy.
