Use SandboxVars.lua to change Project Zomboid’s world rules. Zombie population, respawn, loot, day length, utility shutoffs, survival drain and PvP belong in that gameplay layer—not in the server INI. The persistent world save is a third layer, so changing a value does not necessarily rewrite tiles that have already been generated.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Project Zomboid servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
This separation explains most apparent “settings did nothing” problems. Decide whether you are configuring a new map or an established save, back up the world, change one layer at a time, restart the server and verify the effective value before changing several systems together.

The three configuration layers you must keep separate
A dedicated server combines technical server options, gameplay rules and persistent world state. Treating those as interchangeable is the fastest way to create a no-op.
| Layer | What it controls | When a change takes effect |
|---|---|---|
| Server INI | Server-level behavior and technical options. | After the server reloads the INI, subject to the option’s own behavior. |
SandboxVars.lua |
World rules: zombie behavior and population, loot, time, utilities, survival mechanics, vehicles and PvP. | On restart; some world-generation and population effects are limited by the existing save. |
| World save | Persistent map, generated cells, container state and population state. | It preserves what has already happened in the world, even when sandbox values later change. |
The current settings reference describes SandboxVars.lua as the gameplay-rules layer. If you place a loot, zombie-speed or water-shutoff value in the INI, the server can start normally while ignoring that value. Hosted servers may present the same SandboxVars fields in a control panel; the panel is an interface to the sandbox layer, not a replacement for understanding it.

Choose a new world or an existing save first
New world
A fresh world is the cleanest way to test population, peak timing and other world-generation choices. Set the sandbox values before the map is created, start the server, and record the build and settings that produced it. This gives the initial population and distribution variables the best chance to work as intended.
Existing world
An established save already contains generated cells, looted containers and population history. Later edits still govern ongoing simulation, but they may not visibly repopulate or rewrite tiles that players have already visited. A population multiplier changed after exploration can therefore appear ineffective even though the new value is loaded.

Zombie population: density, growth and geography are different controls
The high-level ZOMBIES selector provides presets ranging from insane through none. It is useful for a quick difficulty choice, but it does not describe every population decision. Advanced controls separate how many zombies exist at different points in the world’s timeline.
| Variable | Question it answers | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
POPULATION_MULTIPLIER |
How dense should the population be overall? | Raise or lower the broad population target. |
POPULATION_START_MULTIPLIER |
How dense is the world at the beginning? | Set the opening pressure independently from the eventual peak. |
POPULATION_PEAK_MULTIPLIER |
How dense can the population become at its peak? | Define the later ceiling rather than assuming the starting density is permanent. |
POPULATION_PEAK_DAY |
When does the population reach that peak? | Make the escalation early, late or gradual according to the server’s intended pace. |
These values describe density and timing, not a promise that every street will contain the same number of zombies. Distribution across cells and the world state already stored in the save also matter. For a new-player server, a lower starting multiplier with a later peak creates room to learn while retaining long-term pressure. For a short seasonal event, a higher starting value and an earlier peak produces immediate danger without waiting for the simulation to develop.
Respawn settings and the “why did my change not work?” problem
Respawn is separate from the initial and peak population. The relevant controls are:

RESPAWN_HOURS: the interval used for eligible population respawn.RESPAWN_UNSEEN_HOURS: the unseen-time condition used before a location can qualify.RESPAWN_MULTIPLIER: how much population returns when a respawn occurs.
The community guide documents RESPAWN_HOURS set to 0.0 as the no-respawn setting. That creates a one-time exploration economy: cleared areas stay cleared unless another mechanic or player action changes them. Nonzero values support recurring danger, but the interval and multiplier should be considered together. A short interval with a high multiplier can make familiar routes repopulate faster than players expect; a long interval with a small multiplier preserves scarcity while still allowing pressure to return.
Do not use respawn settings to solve a world-generation problem. If the goal is to change how many zombies existed when cells were first created, adjust the population controls and test on a fresh map. If the goal is to determine whether cleared neighborhoods become dangerous again, adjust the three respawn variables and account for unseen-time behavior.
Zombie behavior: build a profile instead of moving one slider
SandboxVars exposes separate axes for zombie lore and interaction. You can tune speed, strength, toughness, cognition, memory, sight and hearing, as well as crawling, dragging players down, fence lunges, fake-dead behavior and interaction with doors or player construction.

| Behavior axis | What players feel | Profile guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | How quickly a threat closes distance. | Slower speeds give beginners time to reposition; faster speeds make noise and line-of-sight mistakes costly. |
| Strength and toughness | How much punishment a zombie can take and how dangerous a grab is. | Lower values make individual encounters forgiving; higher values reward avoidance and preparation. |
| Cognition and memory | How zombies react to stimuli and retain targets. | Use lower cognition or memory for a less persistent threat; higher settings make distractions and routes matter. |
| Sight and hearing | How far away a zombie detects players or disturbances. | Reducing one sense can make stealth viable without changing population density. |
| Crawling, fence lunges and dragging down | Which movement and group-attack situations are possible. | These are major lethality switches; change them deliberately rather than assuming a low count is safe. |
| Fake-dead and door/construction interaction | Whether apparently inactive zombies and player-built defenses can surprise or be challenged. | Use consistent rules across the profile so players can learn what is reliable. |
A “casual” profile is therefore not simply “few zombies.” It can combine a modest population with slower speed, weaker senses and less punishing group behavior. A standard profile can retain normal interaction while adjusting only density. A hard profile can increase pressure through speed, awareness, persistence and peak timing instead of relying on an extreme starting count.
Loot and the server economy
Loot rarity and loot respawn answer different questions. Rarity controls what players find when searching containers; respawn controls whether those containers can refill. The LOOT_RESPAWN setting ranges from none through monthly.
| Economy choice | Result | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Rare loot, no respawn | Exploration is a finite resource hunt. Early mistakes have lasting consequences. | Groups that want a survival economy built around planning and shared stockpiles. |
| Common loot, no respawn | The opening is accessible, but the map still becomes progressively exhausted. | New players learning item locations without creating a permanent resupply loop. |
| Rare loot with periodic respawn | Scarcity remains meaningful while distant or forgotten areas can eventually support another expedition. | Long-running servers where travel should remain worthwhile. |
| Common loot with frequent respawn | Supplies are easy to replace and survival pressure shifts toward combat, travel or building. | Relaxed communities that prioritize construction and social play. |
Use the documented seen-hours protection and dropped-world-item cleanup controls to refine that economy. Seen-hours protection helps prevent a recently visited area from refilling immediately, while cleanup determines how long items left on the ground remain available. These are separate from container rarity, so changing one does not automatically change the others.
Best Value
Time, utilities and survival pacing must be tuned together
Day length is a pacing variable, not merely a convenience. It changes how far a player can travel, how long a fight or building session lasts and how quickly hunger, thirst and fatigue become relevant. The sandbox also includes start date and time, water shutoff and electricity shutoff.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Utility failure changes the value of every other setting. A long day with normal loot gives players more real-time opportunities to search and transport supplies. The same day length with rare loot and an early water or electricity shutoff creates a much tighter survival schedule. Decide the intended rhythm first, then align the following systems:
- Day length and start time: determine the size and timing of each playable day.
- Water and electricity shutoff: determine when taps, refrigeration and powered equipment stop being dependable.
- Hunger, thirst and fatigue speed: determine how often players must pause, eat, drink or sleep.
- Food spoilage and refrigerator effectiveness: determine how valuable early refrigeration and preservation are.
- Nutrition and farming resilience: determine whether long-term food planning is forgiving or demanding.
- Injury severity, alarms and locked houses: determine how costly entry, combat and mistakes become.
- Starter kits: determine how much of the opening scavenging phase the server skips.
For beginners, a longer day, slower survival drains and a later utility shutoff leave time to learn controls and map geography. For an established group, normal or shorter days, earlier failures and stricter spoilage create reasons to specialize, preserve food and plan routes. Change related values as a package; otherwise one generous setting can quietly cancel the challenge created by another.
Presets versus a custom sandbox
Presets are fast and reproducible. Select one when a community wants a recognizable baseline and minimal administration. A custom sandbox is preferable when the server has a specific social contract—for example, low initial danger but a rising population, or scarce loot with no container refill.
Build-specific guides may expose additional options, including animal-spawn controls in Build 42. Do not assume a label or option exists in every build: record the exact build, compare the fields shown by the current game or host panel, and avoid copying a setting from a different version without checking its name and available values.
Safe editing workflow for a dedicated server
- Define the target. Write down whether the change is for a fresh world or an existing save, and describe the player-facing goal: less opening pressure, no respawn, more frequent resupply or an earlier blackout.
- Stop and back up. Make a restorable copy of the server save and note the game build. Do not edit a live save while players are connected.
- Edit the correct layer. Put gameplay variables in
SandboxVars.lua. Use the server INI only for server-level and technical options. In a hosting panel, open the sandbox or gameplay section rather than the general server-settings page. - Make one small, reversible change. For example, set
RESPAWN_HOURSto0.0when testing a no-respawn policy, or change one population multiplier before touching speed, loot and utility settings. - Save and restart. A running process may continue using values loaded at startup. Restart through the host panel or your normal service procedure.
- Verify the effective value. Reopen the file or panel after restart and confirm the value was retained. Check the server log or an in-game test where appropriate.
- Test in the right place. Test population-generation changes on a fresh map or an unvisited area. Test respawn, loot and utility behavior over enough in-game time for their conditions to occur.
- Tell players what changed. State whether the change applies immediately, only to newly generated cells or requires a new world. Keep the backup until the group confirms the result.
Troubleshooting common symptoms
| Symptom | Likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing changes after editing a value. | The variable was placed in the server INI or the server was not restarted. | Move gameplay values to SandboxVars.lua, restart and verify the loaded file or panel value. |
| A population change is visible only in unexplored areas. | Existing cells retain generated population and map state. | Test on a fresh world or newly generated cells; do not promise that visited tiles will be rewritten. |
| Cleared neighborhoods refill too quickly. | Respawn interval, unseen-hours protection or multiplier is too aggressive. | Adjust the three respawn variables together and observe the result over the intended interval. |
| Players report that loot is still “wrong.” | Rarity, container respawn, seen-hours protection and dropped-item cleanup were treated as one setting. | Check each loot control separately and decide whether the complaint concerns finding items or replacing them. |
| The server feels much easier or harder than expected. | Day length, utility failure and survival drains are counteracting the chosen zombie or loot profile. | Review the complete pacing profile rather than moving only the zombie-count selector. |
A practical operating rule
Use SandboxVars.lua for the rules players experience, the server INI for technical behavior and the world save as an immutable record of what the map has already generated. Make a backup, change one documented variable, restart, verify and test in a world state that can actually show the change. That process prevents the classic no-op and makes every difficulty decision explainable to the community.
