Enable only mods that explicitly support dedicated servers and match your installed server build. Add one mod at a time, restart after each change, and keep a save and configuration backup so you can roll back safely.

The process is different from adding a client-side mod to your own game. A headless server has its own executable, configuration, network ports and compatibility requirements. A client-only mod may do nothing on the server or prevent it from starting.

What you need before installing anything
Prepare the server as a separate installation rather than modifying a normal desktop copy of The Forest. You need a Windows machine or Windows-based server, permission to install and run software, enough storage for the dedicated-server files and saves, and access to your router or firewall if players will connect from outside your local network.
- A dedicated-server installation directory that is separate from your personal game library.
- SteamCMD, or Steam’s Tools library, for downloading and updating the server.
- The ModAPI dedicated-server package and the release information for each mod you intend to use.
- A backup location for saves and configuration files.
- Administrative access to create firewall rules and, when self-hosting at home, forward the required ports.
Steam Support describes SteamCMD as the standard distribution path: “All Steam game servers now use SteamCMD to download and update game server files.” The setup guide for The Forest identifies dedicated-server app ID 556450.

Install the dedicated-server files
Option 1: Steam’s Tools library
- Open Steam and switch the library filter to show tools.
- Find The Forest Dedicated Server and install it into its own directory.
- Record the full path. You will need it for the first launch, backups, SteamCMD updates and ModAPI troubleshooting.
Do not install ModAPI directly into the ordinary game folder used by your player client. Keeping the server and client installations separate makes it clear which files are being changed and prevents a client update from being mistaken for a server update.
Option 2: SteamCMD
Create a directory for the server, then run SteamCMD with the dedicated-server app ID. A typical Windows command is:
steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir "C:TheForestServer" +app_update 556450 validate +quitReplace the example directory with your chosen path. validate checks the downloaded files and can repair missing or damaged files; it does not validate whether a third-party mod is compatible.
For later maintenance, run the same app update during a planned outage. Updating while the server is running can leave files in a mixed state, so stop the server first and keep a copy of the current configuration and saves.
Run the server once before adding mods
Start the dedicated-server executable from the new installation with no ModAPI changes. The first launch creates the save and configuration folders that later steps depend on. Let it finish initialisation, then stop it cleanly.

Use the launch method supplied by your server installation and keep a copy of the original shortcut or script before changing arguments.
Confirm the first launch worked
- The process starts and remains running long enough to create its folders.
- A save or configuration location appears in the server directory or the documented user-data location.
- The server can be stopped and started again without an error caused by missing paths.
- You can identify where logs are written; those logs are essential when a mod prevents startup.
If the unmodded server cannot start, do not install mods yet. Fix the base installation, permissions, missing files or launch arguments first.
Configure Server.cfg, launch arguments and network ports
Use the configuration file first
Configure the server through Server.cfg when the setting is supported there. Keep the file in the location created by the first launch and preserve the syntax used by the supplied template. Make a copy before editing so you can restore a known-good version.
Command-line parameters can also configure the server. When the same setting appears in both places, command-line values can override values in the configuration file. This is useful for temporary tests, but it can make troubleshooting confusing: check the shortcut, batch file or service definition as well as Server.cfg when a value appears not to stick.

Ports to plan for

The documented ports are 8766 for Steam communication, 27015 for game traffic and 27016 for queries. The exact firewall protocol and router interface depend on your operating system and network equipment, so use the server’s current documentation when creating rules. Test from a network outside the server’s LAN; a local connection can work even when internet forwarding is wrong.
Install ModAPI for the dedicated server
Keep the server package separate from the game client
The ModAPI dedicated-server page provides a package intended for The Forest Dedicated Server. Download the current dedicated-server package, extract it outside the Steam game folder, and keep the extraction directory clearly named. Do not merge it into the normal player-client directory.
ModAPI installations for version 1 and version 2 should remain separate. Do not mix files from the two generations or copy a mod from one installation into the other unless the mod’s own release notes explicitly support that arrangement.
Start ModAPI and select server mods
- Open the extracted ModAPI directory.
- Start
ModAPI.exe. - Select the dedicated-server installation or package when prompted by the utility.
- Review the available server-compatible packages and enable only the ones you have checked against your server build.
- Apply or install the selection, then close ModAPI before starting the server.
The catalog currently includes dedicated-server utilities such as Command Console, Players List, Ban List, Log Viewer, WhiteList and Auto Restart/Shutdown. Treat these as separate packages with separate compatibility requirements; the presence of a package in the catalog does not prove that every other mod, server build or client version will work with it.

There is no universal compatibility matrix covering every ModAPI package and every dedicated-server build. Evaluate each mod individually. A listing or release note should explicitly identify dedicated-server support and the server version it targets.

Compatibility checks
- Read the mod’s current description and release notes, not only its name.
- Confirm that it supports a dedicated or headless server rather than only the player client.
- Compare the mod’s target version with the installed server build after every Steam update.
- Check whether the mod requires a matching client-side installation for players. If that requirement is unclear, test with one administrator client before opening the server to everyone.
- Look for known conflicts with other enabled packages, especially utilities that alter commands, player lists, bans or restart behavior.
Do not infer support from a mod that merely changes files shared with the client. A client-only package can be ignored by the server, produce errors in logs or stop the server from loading.
Install and test mods one at a time
A controlled installation makes a failed startup recoverable. Before changing anything, stop the server and copy the save directory, Server.cfg, launch script and any ModAPI configuration into a dated backup folder.
- Start with an unmodded server and verify that it reaches its normal running state.
- Enable one dedicated-server-compatible mod in ModAPI.
- Start the server and watch its console and log output from the first line through successful initialisation.
- Connect with a test account or administrator client and exercise the mod’s advertised function.
- Stop the server cleanly and record the mod version, server build and result.
- Only after the test succeeds, add the next mod.
One-mod-at-a-time testing identifies the change responsible for a failure. Enabling a large collection in one operation can leave you choosing between removing everything and guessing which package caused the problem.
What a successful test looks like
- The server process stays running rather than exiting during startup.
- The log contains no repeated load or dependency errors for the new package.
- The expected command, menu, list or automated action is available to an authorized player.
- Existing saves load and can be saved again without corruption or missing-world symptoms.
- Players can still connect through the configured game port and the server remains discoverable if query traffic is enabled.
Back up saves and recover from a failed mod
Mods can affect saves, configuration and startup behavior. Keep at least one backup made while the server is stopped, and retain a known-good copy from before each update or mod change. Label backups with the date, server build and enabled mod set.
If the server will not start
- Stop any remaining server process.
- Remove or disable the most recently added mod.
- Start the server with the last known-good configuration.
- Review the log around the first error rather than only the final shutdown message.
- If the server still fails, restore the backup of the configuration and ModAPI files, then test the unmodded installation.
- Restore the save only when you have confirmed that the failure was not caused by save corruption; preserve the failed copy for diagnosis.
If players can connect but a feature fails
Check that the package is actually the dedicated-server edition, that ModAPI applied it to the intended server directory and that the running server was restarted after installation. Verify the mod’s version against the server build and inspect its log entries. A successful connection does not prove that a particular mod loaded.
If the server disappears from the browser
Check the query port, firewall and router forwarding separately from the game port. A server can accept a direct connection while failing to answer browser queries. Also confirm that the server’s listing or token settings are configured as required by the current dedicated-server guide.
Update Steam files and mods safely
Steam updates can change the executable or supporting files that a mod expects. Schedule maintenance rather than updating during an active session.
- Announce downtime and stop the server cleanly.
- Back up saves,
Server.cfg, launch arguments and the complete ModAPI configuration. - Run SteamCMD with
+app_update 556450 validate +quit, or update the dedicated server through Steam’s Tools library. - Record the new server build if the installation reports one.
- Check every enabled mod’s current release notes and dedicated-server support against that build.
- Start the server without changing several variables at once. If it fails, remove the most recently added or updated mod first.
- Test player connections and each important administrative function before ending the maintenance window.
Do not assume that a mod that worked yesterday remains compatible after a Steam update. Rechecking versions is part of every server update, not an optional cleanup step.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
A managed host can remove machine maintenance and home-router configuration, but it does not eliminate mod compatibility work. You still need to confirm that the provider permits ModAPI or the relevant dedicated-server package and that you can access backups, logs and startup arguments.

Choose self-hosting when direct filesystem control and custom mod testing matter more than convenience. Choose managed hosting when avoiding port forwarding and machine maintenance is worth the recurring cost, provided the host supports the exact server package and access you need.
