How to Set Up an FTB OceanBlock Minecraft Server (1.16.3, Java 8)

A complete guide to hosting FTB OceanBlock 1.16.3 on Minecraft 1.16.5, covering the official installer, Java 8, memory flags, EULA, client matching, backups, firewalls, and router forwarding.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To host FTB OceanBlock, install the official OceanBlock 1.16.3 server files, run them with 64-bit Java 8, accept the EULA, assign suitable memory in the generated launch script, and make every client use the same Minecraft, Forge, and modpack versions. Test on the host and local network before opening the configured port through your firewall and router.

What you are setting up

FTB OceanBlock is a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.16.5. The latest release listed by Feed The Beast is OceanBlock 1.16.3, and that release uses Java 8. CurseForge records the 1.16.3 pack as a Forge project for Minecraft 1.16.5, uploaded on August 21, 2026. Treat those values as a compatibility contract: a server and its players must use the same OceanBlock release, Minecraft version, and Forge build.

Item OceanBlock 1.16.3 value Why it matters
Modpack release 1.16.3 Clients and server must match.
Minecraft 1.16.5 Do not launch the pack against another Minecraft version.
Mod loader Forge Use the Forge profile installed with this pack.
Java Java 8 A different major Java version can stop Forge or individual mods from loading.
Server installer Official OceanBlock installer, ID 100478 It creates the complete server layout instead of requiring manual mod copying.

The installer is a single executable that downloads, updates, and extracts the required pack files. This is safer than assembling a server by copying selected mods: the generated libraries, configurations, Forge files, and launch script are intended to work together.

Prepare the host before downloading

Choose a dedicated location

Create a folder used only for this server, such as C:MinecraftOceanBlock on Windows or ~/minecraft/oceanblock on Linux. Keep the path short, writable by the account that will run Minecraft, and on storage with enough free space for the pack, world growth, logs, and backups. Do not place the server inside a temporary downloads folder.

Use a supported Java runtime

Install 64-bit Java 8 and make sure the account that launches the server can find it. Check the active runtime before starting the pack with:

java -version

The output should identify Java 8. If several Java installations exist, the generated launch script may select the wrong one; correct the Java path in that script rather than changing an unrelated Minecraft client shortcut.

Reserve memory responsibly

FTB’s general server guidance is at least 4–6 GB of RAM for many modpacks. That is guidance from the FTB Team, not a guaranteed requirement for every OceanBlock world or player count. Leave memory for the operating system, Java overhead, file cache, and other services. A host with 8 GB total should not give all 8 GB to Minecraft.

Download the official OceanBlock server installer

  1. Open the Feed The Beast OceanBlock server-files page and select the OceanBlock 1.16.3 server download. The page identifies the installer as ID 100478 and offers downloads for supported platforms.
  2. Save the installer directly into the dedicated server folder. Do not rename it: FTB warns that the filename carries pack and version information.
  3. Verify that the download matches your operating system and CPU architecture. A Windows executable is not interchangeable with the macOS or Linux installer.

Feed The Beast describes its server files as ready for server use. The download page’s generated instructions are authoritative for the platform you selected, particularly on macOS and Linux where the installer is run from a terminal.

Run the installer

Windows

Double-click the downloaded executable from the server folder. If Windows displays a security prompt, confirm that you obtained the file from the official FTB page and then allow it to run. Let the installer complete its download and extraction process before editing or moving any generated file.

macOS and Linux

Use the platform-specific installer supplied by FTB and follow the terminal command shown on the generated download page. Run it from the directory where the server should live so that libraries, mods, configs, and scripts are created together. If the shell reports a permission error, grant execute permission to the installer or run it according to the platform instructions; do not replace it with a different modpack installer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wait for a complete extraction

An interrupted run can leave an incomplete library or mod directory. If the process stops, note the error, remove only the partial installation when necessary, and rerun the official installer in the intended folder. Keeping the original filename makes it easier for the installer to identify the pack and version.

Accept the EULA and inspect the generated files

  1. Start the generated launch script once. On Windows this is normally run.bat; other platforms use the launch script created by the installer.
  2. Allow the first run to generate the world directory, configuration files, logs, and server.properties. Stop the process after generation if it tells you that the EULA has not been accepted.
  3. Open eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA, and change eula=false to eula=true only if you agree to it.
  4. Review server.properties before the next launch. Set the message of the day, difficulty, whitelist behavior, and listening port there. Minecraft’s Java server documentation identifies this file as the location for these settings.

Do not put memory flags in server.properties; that file controls server behavior, not the Java virtual machine’s heap.

Set the Java memory flags in the launch script

Open the generated launch or JVM settings file and locate its -Xms and -Xmx values. -Xms is the initial heap and -Xmx is the maximum heap. Set them within the physical memory available on the host, preserving the script’s existing Forge arguments and classpath. For example, a script may contain values in this form:

-Xms4G -Xmx6G

The example shows syntax, not a universal recommendation. Use the lower end of FTB’s 4–6 GB guidance when the machine is lightly loaded and increase only when actual load, player count, or mod activity justifies it. Giving Java more memory than the host can sustain causes swapping or operating-system instability rather than automatically improving tick performance.

Keep a copy of the original generated script. Installer updates can replace files, and a saved copy lets you restore custom memory or Java-path changes after an update.

Launch and verify the server locally

  1. Run run.bat or the platform launch script from the server directory, not from a shortcut whose working directory points elsewhere.
  2. Keep the console open and wait until it reports that the server is ready for connections. The first start can take longer while Forge builds caches and generates the world.
  3. Start the matching OceanBlock 1.16.3 client with Minecraft 1.16.5, Forge, and Java 8.
  4. On the host computer, connect using the local server address. If the client and server are on the same machine, use the local address offered by the Minecraft client; on a home LAN, other players should use the host’s private IP address and the port shown in server.properties.

Local testing separates modpack and Java problems from router problems. Do not troubleshoot port forwarding until the host can join and a second device on the same LAN can connect.

Make every player match the server

Have each player install the exact OceanBlock 1.16.3 release. A player using another pack release, a different Minecraft version, or another Forge version can see missing-mod errors, registry mismatches, rejected handshakes, or a disconnect during login.

  • Compare the displayed pack version before anyone joins.
  • Use the Forge profile installed for OceanBlock rather than a separately created Forge profile.
  • Do not copy individual mods from another pack to “fix” a mismatch. Reinstall or update through the official FTB installer.
  • When the server is updated, stop it cleanly, back up the world and configuration, update the server files, and have every client update before reconnecting.

Open the server to players outside your home

Allow Java through the host firewall

Create an inbound firewall rule for the Java process or the configured server port. Apply the rule only to the network profiles you trust where possible. If the firewall asks whether to permit Java, approve the runtime that actually appears in java -version and in the launch script; allowing a different Java installation will not help the server process.

Forward the configured port on the router

  1. Give the host computer a stable private IP address, either with a DHCP reservation in the router or a correctly configured static address.
  2. Sign in to the router and create a port-forwarding rule from the external port to the same port on the host’s private IP.
  3. Use the port listed in server.properties. Minecraft documents 25565 as the default Java server port, but a server configured with another value must be forwarded with that value instead.
  4. Save the router rule and restart the server if your router requires it.

Router menus and terminology vary by manufacturer. Forwarding a port to the wrong private address, forwarding UDP when the rule requires TCP, or leaving the host on a changing DHCP address are common causes of failure. Share your public address and port only with people you trust, and never publish your router’s administration credentials.

  • Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!

Test from outside the LAN

Ask a friend on a different internet connection to join using the public address and configured port. Testing from inside the same LAN can fail on routers without NAT loopback even when outside access works. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding may not be possible; in that case, use a reachable host or a networking solution designed for private networks rather than repeatedly changing the Minecraft settings.

Protect the world and control access

Use the whitelist

Enable the whitelist in server.properties and add trusted player names from the console. A whitelist reduces unsolicited joins while you test networking and keeps a private cooperative world private. Keep the console available so you can remove a player or stop the server if a mod error appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Back up before changes

Stop the server cleanly before copying its world directory. Back up the world, server.properties, whitelist data, and important configuration files before changing mods, Forge, or the pack release. Store at least one copy outside the live server folder. The official setup documentation does not prescribe a universal backup interval, so choose a schedule based on how much progress your group can afford to lose and how frequently people play.

Keep the installation intact

Do not delete libraries, Forge files, configs, or generated scripts merely to reduce folder size. If you need to experiment, make a separate copy of the server and its backup rather than testing an unverified mod in the only world.

Performance tuning after the first successful launch

Change one variable at a time and watch the console for warnings. First close unnecessary programs on the host and confirm that Java is using the heap you configured. If players experience slow chunk loading or delayed block updates, lower view distance and simulation distance in server.properties before adding more memory. These settings reduce the amount of world work per tick and can help a CPU-limited host.

  • Avoid running resource-heavy desktop applications, virtual machines, or game clients on the same host.
  • Use the allocation already selected for the machine; increasing it beyond available RAM can worsen performance.
  • Check whether lag occurs for everyone or only one player. A single player’s delay can be an internet or client issue rather than server tick lag.

FTB’s 4–6 GB statement is a starting point for many packs, not a player-capacity promise. World complexity, automation, exploration, and simultaneous players determine the real load.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Self-hosting gives you direct access to every file and avoids a recurring hosting bill, but you are responsible for Java, firewall rules, router forwarding, updates, backups, uptime, and troubleshooting. A managed Minecraft host usually supplies a control panel, a public endpoint, automated or selectable backups, and support, at a monthly cost. Verify current plan limits and locations directly with any provider because prices, capacity, support terms, and availability change.

Decision factor Self-hosted OceanBlock Managed server
Monthly cost No hosting fee; you supply the computer and internet connection. Recurring fee; current price depends on the plan and region.
Setup effort You install Java, the FTB files, firewall rules, and router forwarding. Usually a guided deployment, but pack configuration still requires your attention.
File and mod control Full access to scripts, configs, worlds, and backups. Control depends on the provider’s panel and policies.
Backups You design and verify the schedule and storage. Some plans offer backup tooling; confirm retention and restore limits.
Player capacity Bound by your CPU, RAM, storage, and upload bandwidth. Bound by the selected plan and its resource limits.
Latency Players connect to your home’s public internet location. You can generally select a data-center region closer to players.
Support You diagnose errors yourself. Support availability and scope vary by provider.

Choose self-hosting when you want maximum control and are comfortable maintaining a network service. Choose managed hosting when predictable availability, a simpler public endpoint, or provider assistance is worth the recurring charge.

Troubleshoot in a fixed order

The installer will not run

  • Confirm that you selected the installer for the correct operating system and architecture.
  • Download it again from the official OceanBlock server-files page if the file is incomplete.
  • Restore the original filename; FTB states that the name contains pack and version information.
  • Run it from the dedicated server folder and follow the platform-specific instructions.

The server crashes or reports the wrong Java

  • Run java -version in the same account that launches the server.
  • Ensure the runtime is 64-bit Java 8.
  • Inspect the launch script for an explicit Java path that points to an older or incompatible installation.
  • Remove conflicting Java paths from the script, preserving the Forge arguments generated by the installer.

Friends cannot connect

  1. Connect on the host itself.
  2. Connect from another device on the same LAN using the host’s private IP.
  3. Check the host firewall rule for the active Java process.
  4. Check that the router forwards the port shown in server.properties to the host’s current private IP.
  5. Have an external player test the public address and port.

If LAN access works but outside access fails, the modpack is probably functioning and the remaining fault is in the firewall, router, public address, or internet provider.

The client reports missing mods or a mismatch

Compare the server’s OceanBlock release, Minecraft version, and Forge version with the client’s installation. Reinstall or update through the FTB installer instead of adding random jars. A clean, matching client installation is usually faster to diagnose than a partially edited one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server is slow

Confirm that the host is not swapping, close background programs, lower view and simulation distance, and inspect the console for repeated errors. Change memory only within the host’s available RAM. FTB’s general allocation guidance does not guarantee smooth play for a particular number of players or an automation-heavy world.

A repeatable update procedure

  1. Announce a maintenance window and stop the server with its console command.
  2. Copy the world and configuration files to a dated backup location.
  3. Record the current OceanBlock, Minecraft, Forge, Java, and memory settings.
  4. Use the official FTB installer to update the server files; do not mix files from another pack release.
  5. Update every player’s client to the same release before reopening the whitelist.
  6. Start the server, watch the console for errors, and test locally before inviting remote players.

If the updated server fails, stop it and restore the backed-up world and previous server files. Never experiment on the only copy of an established world.

Final launch checklist

  • OceanBlock 1.16.3 is installed from the official server installer (ID 100478).
  • The server and all clients target Minecraft 1.16.5, Forge, and Java 8.
  • The EULA is accepted only after you have read it.
  • server.properties contains the intended MOTD, difficulty, whitelist setting, and port.
  • Memory flags are in the generated launch/JVM settings, not in server.properties.
  • The host can join locally, and another LAN device can join before internet testing.
  • The firewall permits the active Java server process.
  • The router forwards the configured port to the host’s stable private IP.
  • The whitelist contains only trusted players.
  • A tested backup exists before major modpack or configuration changes.

Once these checks pass, the server is ready for a private OceanBlock world. Keep the launch console, logs, and backups available so the next update or connection problem can be diagnosed without risking the save.
