Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe safest method is to start with a clean PC installation, launch the game once, manage the mod list in a separate Mod Organizer 2 profile, install root-level tools such as xNVSE outside the Data folder, and follow the required section of the Viva New Vegas guide in order. Add mods in small, testable groups and begin a new character for every materially different setup; never load a vanilla save into a new mod profile.
What a safe New Vegas mod installation looks like
Fallout: New Vegas mods change files, plugins, scripts and sometimes the way the game starts. A stable setup is therefore less about collecting the largest possible list and more about making every change isolated, reversible and identifiable. The workflow below gives you a known starting point, a controlled place for ordinary mods, a separate procedure for game-root utilities, and a save policy that prevents incompatible data from being carried into a new profile.

- Clean baseline: install the PC game and launch it once so the game creates its folders and INI files.
- One manager and one instance: use Mod Organizer 2 (MO2) with a dedicated profile or portable instance rather than mixing managers.
- Correct utility location: install xNVSE and other root-level tools in the folder containing the game executable, not in
Data. - Curated order: complete the required section of Viva New Vegas before adding optional visual or gameplay changes.
- Incremental testing: add one logical group at a time, launch through the manager and make a test save before proceeding.
- Save isolation: start a new character for each materially different profile and archive older saves separately.
This approach also makes troubleshooting practical: if a crash or bad behavior appears immediately after one group, you know where to look instead of guessing across an entire load order.
Prepare a clean game installation
Install the PC version and run it once
Install Fallout: New Vegas through your PC storefront, then launch it normally before installing mods. Let it reach the main menu and close it. This first run creates the directories needed for saves and INI configuration, which prevents a mod manager or utility from targeting folders that do not yet exist.

Do not begin by copying a downloaded mod collection into the game directory. A clean first run gives you a baseline that can be repaired or recreated if an experiment goes wrong.
Identify the game root folder
The root folder is the directory that contains FalloutNV.exe. It is different from the Data folder inside that directory. You will use the root only for tools whose documentation explicitly requires it; ordinary plugins, textures and meshes should be managed by MO2.
Record the starting state
Before changing anything, note the game edition and executable build shown by your installation, the location of the root folder and the profile you intend to use. Keep a copy of your unmodded saves and configuration files in a separate archive. A backup is useful only if it is outside the folders that a mod manager may later replace or clean.

Choose one mod manager: MO2 or Vortex
Both Mod Organizer 2 and Vortex can manage New Vegas mods, but the safest choice depends on whether you are following a specific guide and how much isolation you need. Viva New Vegas is written around MO2’s controlled, profile-based workflow. Vortex is capable of installing New Vegas mods, and xNVSE documentation describes a Vortex route, but combining directions from both managers makes the resulting deployment harder to reproduce and troubleshoot.

| Decision point | Mod Organizer 2 | Vortex |
|---|---|---|
| Profile isolation | Separate profiles or a portable instance can keep different mod lists and settings apart. | Supports managed deployments, but you should follow one Vortex instance and its own deployment workflow. |
| File conflicts | Virtual file system and conflict indicators show which mod wins without overwriting the original files. | Provides conflict and rule management, but the presentation and terminology differ from MO2. |
| Load-order visibility | Plugin order and overwrite information are visible in the same controlled environment used by VNV. | Offers load-order management, but a VNV procedure written for MO2 will not map one-to-one. |
| Guide compatibility | Recommended workflow for Viva New Vegas and its required sequence. | Usable for New Vegas, but follow Vortex-specific instructions rather than translating MO2 steps ad hoc. |
| Root utilities | Root tools such as xNVSE still must be installed outside MO2 in the game root. | Some documentation provides a Vortex path, but root files still require the placement specified by the utility’s project documentation. |
| Rollback and reproduction | Disabling a mod or switching profiles is reversible and leaves the base installation cleaner. | Deploy/undeploy controls can be reversible when used consistently; mixing managers defeats that benefit. |
| Best fit | Readers following VNV, testing multiple profiles or wanting explicit overwrite visibility. | Readers already comfortable with Vortex who will use Vortex instructions from start to finish. |
For a first VNV-style setup, install MO2 and create a dedicated profile or portable instance. Do not manage the same game instance with MO2 and Vortex at different times unless you have completely cleaned the previous deployment and are deliberately rebuilding from a known baseline.
Set up Mod Organizer 2 for a reproducible profile
- Install MO2 for Fallout: New Vegas. During setup, point it at the game installation that contains
FalloutNV.exe. Keep MO2’s mod and profile data in a location you can back up. - Create a profile for the new build. Give it a descriptive name such as
VNV-required-2026-10. Enable profile-specific INI files and saves if those options are offered, so experiments cannot silently alter another profile. - Select the profile before installing mods. A mod installed or enabled in the wrong profile can make two supposedly separate playthroughs share files or plugins.
- Use MO2’s virtual deployment. Install ordinary mods through MO2, inspect the left-pane overwrite/conflict indicators, and arrange plugins in the right pane according to the guide. The virtual file system means the physical game directory is not repeatedly overwritten by every texture or plugin.
- Launch only through the configured executable. Add the documented game or loader executable to MO2 and use the Run button. Starting the game directly can bypass the virtual file system and make a correctly installed mod appear to be missing.
- Capture a known-good checkpoint. After the required baseline works, record the profile name, enabled mods, plugin order and utility versions. Export or copy that information with your backup.
MO2’s isolation is useful only when you respect it. Keep each playthrough’s saves and profile identity clear, and do not treat the profile as a disposable folder if you may need to reproduce a bug later.
Install xNVSE and other root-level utilities correctly
Why xNVSE is different from a normal mod
xNVSE is a script extender and loader. Its loader and related plugin files interact with the game executable, so they do not belong in the virtual Data directory managed like a normal texture, mesh or plugin archive. The xNVSE project README explicitly says: “Do not copy these files to the Data folder or install it with MO2 as with a normal mod.”
Placement checklist
- Check the supported game build. Download xNVSE from its project or Nexus page and confirm that the release supports the executable build you installed and the version required by your chosen guide.
- Open the root folder. Navigate to the directory that contains
FalloutNV.exe, not the childDatadirectory. - Extract the documented files there. Place the loader and plugin files exactly as the xNVSE README and Viva New Vegas utilities instructions specify. Preserve any required subfolder structure.
- Do not add the loader as an MO2 mod. Do not put
nvse_loader.exeor its root files into a mod archive or the Data folder. - Choose the documented launch target. Start through
nvse_loader.exe, or throughFalloutNV.exewhen using the documented 4GB-patched setup. Configure that executable in MO2 so the virtual file system is active. - Test before adding more utilities. Reach the main menu, then exit. If the game cannot start, stop here and verify the root files and runtime match the guide before installing additional plugins.
Other utilities in the VNV list may also be root-level. Treat the VNV utilities page and each project’s own documentation as the authority for location; never assume that every downloaded archive belongs in Data.

Follow Viva New Vegas in the stated order
Viva New Vegas (VNV) is a curated baseline whose required tools and mods were selected and play-tested for a stable, smooth experience. Use its required section as a sequence, not as a shopping list.
- Finish prerequisites first. Install the required utilities, fixes and framework components in the order shown by the guide.
- Read each mod’s notes before clicking install. Pay attention to prerequisites, compatibility notes, options and whether a file is intended for the root folder rather than MO2.
- Keep optional content out of the first pass. Do not add visual overhauls, gameplay changes or convenience plugins until the required section launches and plays correctly.
- Use the guide’s load-order instructions. If the guide specifies a plugin position, rule or patch, reproduce it rather than relying on a generic sorting operation.
- Make a test save only after the baseline loads. Walk through a short, repeatable test—main menu, a new game, movement, a transition and a save—before extending the list.
A curated baseline reduces unknown interactions. It does not make every later addition safe automatically; each optional mod still needs its own compatibility check and test.
Add new mods in small, testable groups
Use logical batches
Install one related group at a time, such as a small set of interface files or a single gameplay feature with its stated requirements. Avoid installing dozens of unrelated archives and then trying to identify one bad file. After each group, launch from MO2, perform the same short test and create a clearly named test save.
Read MO2’s conflict indicators
When two mods provide the same file, MO2 exposes the conflict and which version currently wins. A conflict is not automatically an error—patches often intentionally override a base file—but an unexpected winner is a reason to stop and read the mod’s compatibility notes. Resolve the intended priority before moving on.

Use a last-change rollback
If the game crashes or behaves incorrectly, disable the most recently added group rather than changing several settings at once. Re-run the same test. If the problem disappears, inspect that group’s requirements, file conflicts and plugin position; if it remains, return to the last known-good profile checkpoint and investigate the next layer.
- Crash before the main menu: disable the latest plugin group, then verify xNVSE root files, executable compatibility and the configured loader.
- Crash when loading a save: test a new game in the same profile. If a new game works, suspect a save/profile mismatch rather than assuming the installation is fixed.
- Missing textures, meshes or interface elements: check that the mod is enabled in the active MO2 profile, that its archive installed with the expected folder structure and that a conflicting mod is not winning.
- Wrong behavior after a patch: restore the documented plugin order and check whether the patch is intended for the exact mod versions you installed.
Protect your saves and profiles
Why an old save is not a compatibility test
The Viva New Vegas FAQ states: “You cannot use an existing Fallout: New Vegas save to play Viva New Vegas.” It also warns: “Do not re-use vanilla saves or any save from different mod setups!” A save contains more than the character’s visible inventory; scripts and mod-created data can remain after a mod is removed. Loading that data into a different list can produce bugs that are difficult to diagnose and may persist after you change the load order.
Use a new character for each materially different profile
When you create a new VNV profile, change the major gameplay or scripting foundation, or move to a substantially different mod list, start a new game. Keep the old character’s saves archived separately and label them with the profile name. Do not use an old save merely to reach a familiar location quickly while testing the new list.
Do not remove scripted or gameplay mods mid-playthrough
Disabling a texture replacer is generally a different risk from removing a mod that adds quests, scripts, perks or persistent records. Removing the latter can leave scripts or baked data in the save. Unless the mod’s documentation explicitly describes a safe removal procedure, finish the playthrough with it installed or begin a fresh profile and character.
Best Value
Keep a recovery copy
Back up the profile’s mod list, plugin order, utility versions and saves before major changes. Store the archive outside the active game and MO2 directories. A backup that is overwritten during a cleanup is not a recovery plan.
A complete first-install procedure
Use this sequence when you want a single, repeatable baseline rather than a collection of loosely related downloads.
- Install Fallout: New Vegas on PC and launch it once to create its folders and INI files.
- Close the game and identify the root directory containing
FalloutNV.exe. - Install MO2, create a dedicated profile or portable instance, and select it as active.
- Install xNVSE and any other root-level utilities directly where their documentation requires; keep them out of
Dataand out of MO2’s normal mod list. - Configure MO2 to launch through
nvse_loader.exe, or the documented patched executable, then test to the main menu. - Install every item in Viva New Vegas’s required section in its stated order. Follow its notes for options, patches and plugin placement.
- Launch through MO2, start a new game and perform a short movement, transition and save test.
- Record the working profile name, enabled mods, load order and utility versions, then back up that record and the new profile’s saves.
- Add one logical optional group, test again and keep it only if the result is stable.
- If anything fails, disable the last group and return to the last known-good checkpoint before changing another variable.
Common mistakes that break otherwise good setups
- Putting xNVSE in Data: the loader belongs in the game root as specified by its README.
- Installing xNVSE through MO2 like a normal archive: this bypasses the required executable-level placement.
- Launching outside MO2: a direct launch can omit MO2’s virtual files and make the active profile appear incomplete.
- Mixing managers: switching between MO2 and Vortex without cleaning the prior deployment obscures which files are active.
- Skipping the guide’s required section: optional mods cannot compensate for a missing prerequisite or incorrect load order.
- Changing several groups at once: you lose the last-change clue needed for efficient troubleshooting.
- Reusing a vanilla save: the save may carry incompatible data from a different setup.
- Removing scripted content mid-game: persistent scripts or records can remain in the save even after the files are gone.
- Failing to record versions: without the profile name, load order and utility versions, reproducing a working state becomes guesswork.
When to stop and rebuild
Rebuild from the last clean checkpoint when you can no longer tell which manager deployed a file, when root utilities and the game runtime no longer match the guide, or when repeated profile changes have produced inconsistent behavior. Preserve your backup and old saves, create a fresh profile, reinstall the required baseline in order and test before importing any optional choices. A deliberate rebuild is usually faster than trying to repair an unknown mixture of deployments and save data.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The practical rule set
Use one manager, one profile and one guide. Keep root utilities such as xNVSE outside the Data folder. Add changes in small groups and test after every group. Treat a new mod list as a new game: archive the old saves, start a new character and do not remove scripted or gameplay mods unless their documentation provides a safe procedure. These rules make failures reversible and keep a stable New Vegas installation reproducible.
