Before you install a snapshot, protect your worlds
A snapshot is a testing version of Minecraft Java Edition, so treat it as experimental rather than as a safe substitute for a regular release. Minecraft’s official instruction is: “Testing versions can corrupt your world, so please backup and/or run them in a different folder from your main worlds.”

- Back up a world: Make a separate copy before opening it in a snapshot. Use the copy for testing and keep the original untouched.
- Or isolate snapshot files: Run snapshots in a folder separate from the one containing your main worlds. This helps keep testing data apart from established saves.
- Do not risk an irreplaceable save: If you cannot make a backup or isolate the snapshot, avoid opening that world in a testing version.
Install and launch a snapshot in the Minecraft Launcher
- Open the Minecraft Launcher. Use the official Launcher’s snapshot workflow for Java Edition.
- Enable snapshots. Select Installations and turn on the option to show or enable snapshots in that area.
- Select or create an installation. Choose an installation set to the snapshot version you want, or create a new launch installation and select that version.
- Launch the snapshot. Start the game from the installation you selected. Test with a disposable world or a backed-up copy rather than your only copy of a valuable save.
Minecraft’s official instructions for Minecraft 26.3 Snapshot 9, published August 17, 2026, describe the Launcher and Installations-tab workflow. That announcement establishes the procedure, but does not establish that this is the newest snapshot as of October 7, 2026.
Java requirements depend on how you launch the game
With a default Launcher setup, Java is handled differently than it is with a custom Java installation or a third-party launcher. Check the requirements for the specific snapshot if you use either of those non-default setups; do not assume a requirement from an older snapshot still applies.

For example, the Minecraft Java Team’s May 12, 2021 announcement for snapshot 21w19a said that users with a custom Java setup or third-party launcher needed Java 16 or above for that snapshot. It also said the default Launcher would download and install the correct version. Those statements concern that 2021 release and are not a universal current Java requirement.

If you encounter a bug, use Minecraft’s issue tracker to report it. For suggestions, use Minecraft’s feedback options. Keep the bug report focused on the issue you observed and identify the snapshot version you were testing.
