Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons appear in particular stories, and their roles depend on the film, series, or toy-line continuity. The clearest way to understand a faction name is to ask which Transformers setting uses it.
What do Transformers faction names mean?
A faction is a group or allegiance used to identify characters in a particular Transformers story. The label can signal a broad side in a conflict, such as Autobot or Decepticon, but it does not by itself establish that a character has the same role or allies in every adaptation.

Hasbro’s official descriptions illustrate why context matters. Its 2012 Transformers Prime: Beast Hunters announcement describes Predacons joining the Decepticons against the Autobots. In contrast, Hasbro’s War for Cybertron: Kingdom Blackarachnia product description frames Maximals and Predacons as joining the fight alongside Autobots and Decepticons. Those are descriptions of different settings, not one universal faction chart.
How the main factions are presented in official material
| Faction label | Setting in the cited material | Stated role or alignment |
|---|---|---|
| Autobots | Transformers Prime: Beast Hunters | They face the Decepticons and the newly introduced Predacons in Hasbro’s announcement. |
| Decepticons | Transformers Prime: Beast Hunters | Hasbro says the Predacons joined them to take down the Autobots. |
| Predacons | Transformers Prime: Beast Hunters | They join the Decepticons against the Autobots. |
| Maximals and Predacons | War for Cybertron: Kingdom | Hasbro’s product copy describes them as joining the battle alongside Autobots and Decepticons; it does not supply a universal account of their allegiances. |
| Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons | Transformers: Rise of the Beasts | Hasbro’s product description names them as factions introduced in that movie adventure. It calls Scourge a “menacing Terrorcon hunter.” |
The table reflects the cited Hasbro descriptions, including product copy; it is not a complete account of every show, film, comic, game, or toy line.

Autobots and Decepticons: the familiar opposition
Autobots and Decepticons are the most recognizable opposing faction names. Their conflict is a useful starting point for understanding Transformers, but the source material here supports describing that opposition in the specific Beast Hunters setting rather than declaring one immutable story for the entire franchise. In Hasbro’s October 11, 2012 announcement, Aaron Archer, then vice president of Transformers brand creative and design, described that version this way: “The PREDACON faction, made up of menacing beasts that convert in ways mankind has never seen, have now joined the DECEPTICONS to take down the AUTOBOTS.”
Why Predacon alignment depends on the setting
Predacon is not a safe shortcut for a single franchise-wide allegiance. In Transformers Prime: Beast Hunters, Hasbro explicitly says Predacons joined the Decepticons to oppose the Autobots. In its Kingdom description, Predacons instead appear in a setup where they join Maximals, Autobots, and Decepticons in the battle. The two descriptions establish variation between those story framings; they do not establish a definitive taxonomy for every Predacon group.

Where Maximals and Terrorcons fit
Maximals
Hasbro’s War for Cybertron: Kingdom product description places Maximals in a story framing that also includes Predacons, Autobots, and Decepticons. Use the setting name when explaining that relationship: the description does not define one Maximal alignment across all Transformers continuities.

Terrorcons
Hasbro’s Rise of the Beasts product copy names Terrorcons alongside Maximals and Predacons as factions in the film adventure. The same description identifies Scourge as a “menacing Terrorcon hunter.” These details describe the movie’s framing, not a general rule for every story using the Terrorcon name.

Faction labels can have exceptions
Hasbro’s Transformers Legacy character-bios index includes many faction-tagged characters and narrower designations such as “Renegade Maximal” and “Autobot/Decepticon.” Such entries are a reminder that a character-specific label or variant does not automatically amount to a major, separate franchise-wide faction. When a character has an unusual tag, keep the explanation attached to that character and the relevant story.

How to identify a faction in a particular Transformers story
- Start with the continuity. Name the show, film, comic, game, or toy-line story before explaining a group’s role.
- Check the source’s wording. A narrative episode or film and a product description may frame a faction differently; do not treat promotional copy as a complete lore reference.
- Separate allegiance from identity. A faction name tells you how a group is labeled in that setting, while an individual character may have a narrower or variant designation.
- Avoid carrying alignments across versions. The Predacons’ differing descriptions in Beast Hunters and Kingdom show why one setting’s alliance should not be applied automatically to another.
