Start with the distance from your main seat to the screen and choose a horizontal viewing angle that suits you: about 30° is a more relaxed reference, while 36° creates a more immersive image. Then check the screen’s aspect ratio and wall fit, and separately confirm that your projector can produce that image size from its planned lens position. These are planning targets—not universal comfort rules.
Choose a viewing angle for your seat
Measure from the primary viewer’s eyes to the screen plane. A wider viewing angle means a larger image relative to that seat; moving closer has the same effect. ProjectorCentral’s 2026 guide reports 30° as the SMPTE reference and 36° as the more immersive THX recommendation. Use them as a starting range, not a guarantee that a particular size will feel right to everyone. ProjectorCentral’s home theater projector guide also suggests testing the proposed dimensions in the room before settling on a size.

For example, ProjectorCentral gives 16:9 screen diagonals of 110 inches at a 15-foot viewing distance for a 30° angle, and 134 inches at the same distance for 36°. The larger option fills more of the viewer’s field of view; which feels preferable depends on the viewer, content, and room.

For a 100-inch 16:9 screen, ThrowCalc’s calculator gives approximately 13.6 feet at a 30° horizontal viewing angle and 11.2 feet at 36°. These are calculator outputs based on the stated screen geometry, not a promise of universal comfort. Turn the viewing distance into a screen size
- Measure the seat distance. Measure from the main viewer’s eyes to the screen plane, not to the projector.
- Pick a starting viewing angle. Use 30° for a more relaxed starting point or 36° for a more immersive one, then adjust for preference and content.
- Check the screen shape and dimensions. Choose an aspect ratio suited to the content you watch and compare the resulting width and height with the available wall area. A diagonal alone does not tell you whether the screen will fit. ProjectorScreen.com’s calculator can calculate viewable area from a screen shape and diagonal, or from a single dimension.
- Mock up the image. Mark the proposed width and height on the wall with removable painter’s tape. Sit in the main seat and judge the scale and fit before buying.
- Verify projector compatibility separately. Check whether the exact projector model can produce the selected image size from the intended lens location. Use that model’s current manufacturer calculator or manual.
Keep seat distance and projector throw distance separate
Viewing distance is the distance from the viewer to the screen. Throw distance is measured from the projector lens to the screen. They answer different questions: the first helps determine how large the image appears from your seat; the second determines whether the projector can create that image size from its planned location.
Before finalizing an installation, check the selected projector’s supported throw range and placement guidance. Standard-throw, short-throw, and ultra-short-throw projectors have different placement needs; a mount or shelf can help position equipment, but it does not change a lens’s supported throw range. Use room-size ranges as orientation, not a rule

These are manufacturer examples, not mandatory standards. They do not replace measuring your seat distance, checking the image format and wall, or verifying the exact projector’s throw capabilities. Epson also describes 30%–50% of the primary viewer’s field of view as a rule of thumb; it is a broad guide rather than a measured population preference.

Choose a screen only after confirming the fit
Once you have settled on the image dimensions, a 16:9 projector screen is a reasonable option if that matches your content and chosen image shape. Before buying, verify both the viewable area and the screen’s actual frame dimensions against the wall, and confirm that your projector can fill it from the planned lens position. Without your room measurements and projector model, no exact diagonal or screen model can be recommended.
