Krita is the practical starting point if you want a free, open-source desktop alternative to Adobe software for digital painting and 2D image work. It has official downloads for Windows, macOS and Linux, opens and saves its own editable .kra files, and can export common delivery formats such as PNG and JPEG. It is not a guaranteed replacement for every Creative Cloud application, and its PSD support is incomplete, so test important production files before changing your workflow.
This guide covers installation, hardware requirements, first-launch setup, PSD migration, responsible expectations about AI features, and the cases where GIMP or Adobe may be a better fit.

What Krita is—and what “AI Adobe alternative” really means
Krita is free and open source software focused on digital painting, illustration, concept art, texture work and other 2D creative tasks. The official download page currently lists Krita 5.3.4.1, released on 7 October 2026. Use krita.org as the starting point for current installers, older releases and published GPG signatures.
Calling Krita an “Adobe alternative” is useful only if you define the job. Krita can replace a paid painting application for many artists, but it is not a drop-in replacement for every Adobe application or every production pipeline. Adobe has not disclosed the complete PSD specification. Krita therefore relies on reverse engineering, and compatibility may be limited to basic PSD features. Files that depend on unusual layer effects, smart objects, adjustment behavior, proprietary text handling or other advanced features can change when opened.

“AI” needs the same qualification. The installation information establishes Krita’s desktop platform support and extensibility context, but it does not establish a particular built-in generative-AI tool or guarantee that a specific AI plug-in works with the current release. Treat any AI extension as a separate project: check that extension’s own current documentation, supported Krita version, model requirements, GPU requirements and security guidance before installing it.
For ordinary painting and image creation, Krita itself is the dependable foundation. You can install it, create a canvas, choose a brush and save an editable project without subscribing to a service or buying a proprietary file format.
Check your computer before installing
Krita’s official requirements are modest for a desktop painting application, but large canvases, many layers and AI-related workloads can use substantially more memory and graphics power than a small sketch.
| Item | Requirement or recommendation | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 8.1 or newer | The Microsoft Store build requires Windows 10. |
| macOS | macOS 10.15 or newer | Use the current macOS binary offered on the official download page. |
| Linux | Supported desktop Linux distribution | You can choose an AppImage, distribution package, Flatpak or Snap. |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM minimum; 16 GB recommended | The 16 GB recommendation is more comfortable for large documents, multiple layers and multitasking. Named statistic: Krita Foundation, 2026. |
| Graphics | OpenGL 3.0 or Direct3D 11 support | Older or incompatible graphics drivers can prevent acceleration or cause launch and display problems. |
| Tablet | Any graphics tablet compatible with your operating system | A tablet is optional; Krita supports pressure-sensitive input when the operating system recognizes the device. |
Leave additional disk space for the application, your working files, exported copies and any models or plug-ins you later choose to install. The official requirements do not specify a single storage number, so available space depends on your documents and extensions.
Install Krita on Windows
Choose the installer or portable ZIP
Open the official Krita download page and select the Windows build. The page offers a conventional installer and a portable ZIP. The installer is the simplest choice for most people because it creates the normal application shortcuts and integrates with Windows. Choose the portable ZIP when you need to run Krita from a folder or removable drive without a conventional installation.

- Download the current Windows package from krita.org. Confirm that your computer runs Windows 8.1 or newer.
- For the standard setup, open the installer and follow its prompts. Keep the default destination unless you have a specific storage policy.
- For the portable version, download the ZIP, extract it to a folder you control and launch the Krita executable from that folder. Keep the extracted folder together; do not move only the executable.
- Start Krita from the Start menu, desktop shortcut or extracted folder. If Windows displays a security prompt, verify that you obtained the file from the official site before allowing it to run.
If you specifically want the Microsoft Store edition, note the separate Windows 10 minimum. The Store package is not required; the official installer works for the broader Windows 8.1-or-newer range listed by Krita.
Windows launch problems
- If the program opens to a blank or unstable canvas, update the graphics driver and confirm support for OpenGL 3.0 or Direct3D 11.
- If a portable copy behaves differently after being moved, extract a fresh copy to a local folder and launch it there.
- If a PSD looks wrong, keep the original untouched and test the file in Krita before making it the only production copy.
Install Krita on macOS
- Visit krita.org and download the current macOS binary.
- Confirm that the Mac runs macOS 10.15 or newer, the minimum shown on the official page.
- Open the downloaded package and follow macOS’s installation prompts. Place Krita in the Applications folder when offered.
- Launch Krita from Applications or Spotlight. If macOS asks whether you want to open an application downloaded from the internet, confirm that the download came from the official Krita site before proceeding.
Keep the downloaded installer until you have opened Krita successfully and created a test document. That gives you a straightforward recovery path if you later need to reinstall the same release.
Install Krita on Linux
Linux users have four supported routes in the official manual: a self-contained AppImage, distribution packages, Flatpak and Snap. Pick one route rather than installing several copies unless you have a specific testing reason.
AppImage: the simplest self-contained option
- Download the Krita AppImage from the official site.
- Open a terminal in the directory containing the file.
- Make it executable, replacing the filename with the exact file you downloaded:
chmod a+x filename.appimage - Run it from that directory:
./filename.appimage
An AppImage keeps the application in one file and does not require a distribution-specific package manager. You are responsible for keeping that file updated and for retaining it if you want to return to the same version.
Distribution packages
Use your distribution’s package manager when you want updates and integration handled in the usual Linux way. The official examples are:

- Fedora:
dnf install krita - Debian or Ubuntu-based systems:
apt install krita - Arch:
pacman -S krita
Package versions can differ from the newest release on the official download page because distributions follow their own packaging and update schedules.
Flatpak
If Flatpak is configured on your system, install the Flathub package for your user account with:
flatpak --user install flathub org.kde.krita
This avoids requiring a system-wide installation and keeps the application managed by Flatpak.
Snap
On a system with Snap support, install Krita with:
sudo snap install krita
Choose the package format that best matches how you normally maintain Linux software. Avoid mixing package formats for the same working installation unless you understand where each copy stores settings and plug-ins.
First launch: create a reliable working setup
Create a test document
- Launch Krita and choose the command to create a new document.
- Select a preset if you want a quick start, or enter a custom canvas width, height and resolution for the project you have in mind.
- Create the canvas and confirm that you can zoom, pan and draw a test stroke.
- Choose a brush preset from the brush selector. Start with a simple opaque brush so that pressure and cursor behavior are easy to evaluate.
- Save immediately as a Krita project using the
.kraformat. This is your editable working file and preserves Krita’s document structure better than an exported image. - When you need a file for a website, message, print workflow or another application, export a separate PNG or JPEG copy. Keep the
.krafile as the source document.
Set up a repeatable file habit
- Use descriptive filenames that include the project and revision, such as
poster-v01.kra. - Keep source files and delivery exports in separate folders so a compressed JPEG never replaces the editable project.
- Before a major change, save a new revision rather than overwriting the only copy.
- For a PSD supplied by another person, duplicate it before opening or converting it. Preserve the original as an interchange reference.
Do you need a drawing tablet?
No. Krita works with a mouse or trackpad, so you can install it and learn the interface without buying extra hardware. A USB pressure-sensitive drawing tablet is an optional accessory that is particularly well matched to extended painting, line work and AI-assisted image workflows that involve repeated masking or touch-up.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Krita supports graphics tablets that are compatible with the operating system. The operating system must recognize the tablet and its driver before Krita can receive pressure data. If strokes appear as a constant width, first test the tablet in the operating system or the manufacturer’s driver utility, then check Krita’s brush pressure settings. A tablet is an input improvement, not a software requirement.
Using Krita with PSD files
Krita can open PSD files, but compatibility is partial. The official FAQ explains that Adobe has not disclosed the PSD specification, so Krita implements support through reverse engineering and may support only basic features reliably.
Safe migration procedure
- Make a copy of every important PSD before opening it in Krita.
- Open the copy and inspect the layer stack, masks, text, blend modes, effects and color appearance.
- Compare the result with the original in the application that created it, if available.
- Export a flattened PNG for visual comparison and keep it alongside the editable source.
- If the document is a production dependency, retain the original PSD and an exported interchange image even after adopting a
.kraworkflow. - Only migrate permanently after testing the specific features your projects use.
Simple raster artwork is a more realistic migration target than a PSD built around proprietary or advanced features. Do not assume that a file opening without an error means every layer behaves identically.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Krita, GIMP or Adobe: which tool fits the job?
Krita is strongest when painting and illustration are the center of the workflow. GIMP is a reasonable secondary option when you want a more traditional Photoshop-style raster editor. Adobe remains relevant when a team depends on proprietary applications, established interchange behavior or features outside Krita’s focus. The table below describes the distinctions supported by the available installation and compatibility information; it does not claim feature parity.

Choose Krita when you want an open workflow centered on painting and are prepared to validate any PSD exchange. Choose GIMP when broad raster-editing conventions matter more than a painting-first interface. Stay with Adobe when your team’s files or processes depend on features that Krita cannot reproduce reliably.

Adding AI capabilities without breaking your workflow
Krita’s open-source nature makes experimentation possible, but openness is not a promise that every AI plug-in is maintained, safe or compatible with every release. Before installing an extension:
- Read the extension’s current documentation and release notes.
- Confirm the supported Krita version, operating system and graphics hardware.
- Check whether models run locally or send images to an external service.
- Review storage requirements for models and temporary files.
- Back up your
.kraprojects before changing plug-ins or application versions. - Test the extension on a duplicate document containing no confidential material.
Do not treat a plug-in’s presence in a video or an old tutorial as proof that it works with Krita 5.3.4.1. Version compatibility, model availability and GPU support can change independently of Krita itself. If an AI feature is essential to your work, verify those details in the extension’s own current documentation before committing to a migration.
Troubleshooting the first installation
Krita will not launch
- Confirm that your operating system meets the listed minimum: Windows 8.1 or newer, macOS 10.15 or newer, or a supported Linux environment.
- Check graphics support and drivers. Krita lists OpenGL 3.0 or Direct3D 11 support.
- On Linux, try one package format rather than launching several installed copies with different permissions and settings.
- On Windows or macOS, download a fresh installer from krita.org if the original file may be incomplete.
The canvas is slow or unstable
- Close other memory-intensive applications and test a smaller canvas.
- Compare your system with the 4 GB minimum and 16 GB recommended memory figures.
- Update graphics drivers and retest hardware acceleration.
- Temporarily disable newly installed extensions to identify whether an add-on is involved.
Tablet pressure does not work
- Verify that the operating system sees the tablet and that its driver is installed.
- Test a basic brush rather than a specialized preset.
- Check that the selected brush uses pressure for size or opacity.
- Restart Krita after changing the tablet driver.
A PSD looks different
That is a compatibility warning, not necessarily an installation failure. Compare the file with the original, identify the layer or effect that changed, and keep an exported image and untouched PSD until the document has been validated.

- Install Krita from the official source for your operating system.
- Confirm the operating-system, RAM and graphics requirements.
- Create and save a small
.kratest project. - Export a PNG and JPEG so you understand the delivery workflow.
- Connect a tablet only if your work benefits from pressure-sensitive input; it is optional.
- Duplicate and test representative PSD files before migrating active projects.
- Document which PSD features survive the test and which require a different application.
- Evaluate any AI plug-in separately, using its own current compatibility and privacy documentation.
- Maintain backups of source files, exported interchange copies and known-good Krita versions.
With those checks complete, Krita is a strong free, open-source painting environment and a credible Adobe alternative for artists who do not require complete PSD fidelity or a specific proprietary application. Its limits are clearest at the boundaries: advanced Adobe file behavior, team interchange and unverified AI extensions.
