ImageMagick and Imagick are different components
ImageMagick is the native image-processing suite. Its command-line tools read, write, resize, crop, convert and inspect image files. The command you normally test is magick.

The PHP manual describes Imagick as a PECL extension that “is not bundled with PHP.” The PECL package metadata describes it as “a native php extension to create and modify images using the ImageMagick API.”

Choose an installation method
For a normal server, start with the Linux distribution package manager. Packages install compatible libraries, register configuration files and receive the distribution’s security updates. The Imagick project says: “The best way of installing Imagick is through a package manager e.g. apt, yum, brew, as they will also install ImageMagick for you.”

Do not choose the AppImage merely to solve a missing PHP module. It contains ImageMagick, not an Imagick build for your PHP runtime.
Identify the PHP runtime before installing anything
Linux hosts often have more than one PHP version. The CLI binary used in a terminal may differ from the PHP-FPM pool serving a website. Record the active CLI version and configuration first:
command -v php
php -v
php --ini
php -r 'echo PHP_MAJOR_VERSION, ".", PHP_MINOR_VERSION, PHP_EOL;'
Note the major and minor version, the loaded php.ini, and the additional configuration directory. On a web server, also inspect the PHP-FPM pool or Apache configuration to determine which binary and SAPI are actually serving requests. Installing php-imagick for one PHP version does not enable it in another.
Have administrative access, a compiler toolchain if you intend to build from source, and a maintenance window for restarting long-running PHP workers. A restart is required because PHP-FPM, Apache and queue workers read extensions when the process starts.
Install with a Debian or Ubuntu package manager
1. Refresh package metadata
sudo apt update
2. Install ImageMagick and the matching Imagick package
Use the package name supplied by the target release. Many Debian-family repositories provide a generic package:

sudo apt install imagemagick php-imagick
Repositories that split extensions by PHP version may instead provide a package such as php8.3-imagick. Replace 8.3 with the version reported by your active PHP binary:

sudo apt install imagemagick "php${PHPV}-imagick"
If the versioned name is not present, search the repository rather than guessing:
apt-cache search imagick
apt-cache policy imagemagick php-imagick
Package availability and the ImageMagick major version vary by Ubuntu or Debian release and by enabled repositories. Keep the ImageMagick and PHP packages from a compatible repository set; mixing unrelated third-party builds can create library or policy conflicts.

3. Confirm both layers
magick identify -version
php -m | grep -i imagick
php --ri imagick
The first command reports the ImageMagick executable and its version. The second shows whether the active CLI PHP loaded a module named imagick. The third prints Imagick’s detailed module information, including the ImageMagick API it was built against. If magick is not provided by an older package, try identify -version to inspect that installation, but do not assume that an identify result proves the PHP extension is working.
4. Restart the service that runs PHP
Restart the PHP SAPI used by the application. The exact unit depends on the installed version; examples include:
sudo systemctl restart php8.3-fpm
sudo systemctl restart apache2
Use the actual PHP-FPM unit on the host. If a queue worker, supervisor-managed process or other long-running daemon runs PHP, restart that process as well.
Install on an RPM-based distribution
Fedora, RHEL-compatible systems and other RPM distributions use different repository names and may require an additional repository for the PHP extension. Check the target release before running the command. A common package-manager pattern is:
sudo dnf install ImageMagick php-pecl-imagick
On systems still using YUM, the equivalent is commonly:

These names are examples, not universal guarantees. Search the enabled repositories when a package is unavailable:
dnf search ImageMagick
# On older systems
yum search ImageMagick
If you are compiling later, install the development package as well (usually named ImageMagick-devel). After installation, run the same independent checks:
magick identify -version
php -m | grep -i imagick
php --ri imagick
Restart the relevant PHP-FPM or Apache service, and verify the web SAPI separately from the CLI.
Build ImageMagick and Imagick from source
Source installation is justified when the repository is too old, a required delegate or codec is absent, or you need a non-default prefix such as /opt or /usr/local. It also transfers responsibility for patching and compatibility to you. Keep a record of the source versions, configure options and installation prefix so that upgrades are repeatable.

Build ImageMagick first
Install a compiler, make, pkg-config and the development headers for the formats and delegates you intend to use. Distribution package names differ. The important requirement is that the development files and the runtime libraries come from the same intended ImageMagick installation.
Obtain a released ImageMagick source archive or checkout by following the project’s official source-build instructions, then run the documented configure-and-build sequence in that source directory:
./configure --prefix=/usr/local
make -j"$(nproc)"
sudo make install
Choose a prefix deliberately. A custom prefix avoids overwriting distribution files but means you may need to expose its libraries and binaries to services explicitly. If the dynamic linker cannot find libraries after installation, update the host’s linker configuration according to your distribution and run its cache-refresh command. Confirm the installed executable before moving on:
/usr/local/bin/magick identify -version
If you installed to another prefix, use that prefix’s bin/magick. Ensure the pkg-config metadata for MagickCore and MagickWand points to the same prefix that Imagick will use.
Build Imagick against that ImageMagick
Imagick requires PHP build tooling, including phpize, a compiler and PHP development headers. Verify that phpize belongs to the same PHP version as the php binary:
command -v phpize
phpize -v
php-config --version
php -v
Clone the Imagick source from its official repository:
git clone https://github.com/Imagick/imagick
cd imagick
phpize
./configure
make -j"$(nproc)"
sudo make install
For reproducible production builds, check out a specific released tag rather than compiling an unpinned moving branch. PECL metadata lists Imagick 3.8.1 as a stable release dated 2025-11-26. The same metadata lists minimum package requirements of ImageMagick 6.5.3-10 or newer and PHP 5.6.0 or newer. Those are metadata minimums, not a promise that every current Imagick release works with every ImageMagick and PHP combination; test the exact pair you deploy.
If ./configure cannot find MagickWand or MagickCore, install the ImageMagick development package or point PKG_CONFIG_PATH at the lib/pkgconfig directory under your chosen prefix. Do not “fix” the error by mixing headers from one ImageMagick major version with libraries from another.
Enable the extension for the intended SAPI
make install places imagick.so in PHP’s extension directory, but PHP still needs an ini directive. Find the configuration PHP actually reads:

php --ini
php-config --extension-dir
Create a file such as 20-imagick.ini in the loaded conf.d directory, or add this line to the appropriate PHP configuration:
extension=imagick.so
Repeat the configuration in the PHP-FPM or Apache SAPI if it uses a different php.ini or scan directory. Avoid adding the directive twice; duplicate loading can produce a “module already loaded” warning. Restart every long-running PHP process after enabling it.
Verify the source build
magick identify -version
php --ri imagick
php -m | grep -i imagick
Check that the ImageMagick major version reported at runtime is the one used when Imagick was compiled. A successful compilation followed by a loader or symbol error usually indicates that the runtime is finding a different ImageMagick library than the build used.

Use the official Linux AppImage
The official ImageMagick download page provides a pre-built Linux AppImage described as a complete portable application requiring no traditional installation. Download it from that page, keep it in a controlled directory, make it executable and run it there:
chmod +x ImageMagick-*.AppImage
./ImageMagick-*.AppImage identify -version
The wildcard in the example must match the filename you downloaded; use the exact filename if more than one AppImage is present. You can call the AppImage directly or place a carefully managed wrapper on the application’s PATH.
An AppImage supplies ImageMagick only. It does not place imagick.so in PHP’s extension directory and cannot make new Imagick() work by itself. Install Imagick through distribution packages or the source/PECL workflow, and make sure that extension is built against a compatible ImageMagick installation. If PHP must use the AppImage’s libraries, ordinary package integration may not be sufficient; test the actual deployment rather than assuming the two installations will interoperate.
Review the security policy
The AppImage documentation recommends establishing a suitable ImageMagick security policy. Inspect the effective policy with:

Use the AppImage’s executable in place of magick when it is not on PATH. Pay particular attention before enabling PDF, PostScript or external delegates in a service that processes untrusted uploads. A policy that blocks a format may be an intentional protection, not a broken installation. Change it only after assessing the delegate, filesystem and network exposure.
Verify ImageMagick and PHP independently
Run these checks in order so that a failure identifies the layer at fault:
- Find the executable:
command -v magickandmagick identify -version. - Inspect CLI PHP:
php -v,php --iniandphp --ri imagick. - Confirm the module list:
php -m | grep -i imagick. - Test the PHP class: run a small script that constructs
Imagick. - Test the web SAPI: execute the same class check through the application’s PHP-FPM or Apache path, then remove the diagnostic endpoint.
A minimal CLI test is:

Save it temporarily as a local script and run php test-imagick.php. The script checks that the class loads, an image object can be created and the extension can produce encoded output. It does not prove that every delegate or format is permitted by policy.
Troubleshoot common failures
php -m does not show Imagick
- Run
command -v phpandphp --ini; you may be checking a different PHP installation from the one you configured. - Confirm that
extension=imagick.sois in a file scanned by that SAPI, not merely in an unused directory. - Check the package name for the active PHP version. A package for PHP 8.2 will not load into PHP 8.3.
- Run
php --ri imagickand inspect startup warnings for a missing shared object or dependency. - Restart PHP-FPM, Apache and persistent workers after changing configuration.
The build cannot find MagickWand or MagickCore
Install the ImageMagick development package, not only the runtime package. Then verify that pkg-config sees the intended prefix. For a custom prefix, set PKG_CONFIG_PATH to its lib/pkgconfig directory before rerunning ./configure. Remove stale build output or run the project’s clean step when changing prefixes so that old detection results are not reused.
Undefined symbols or loader errors appear at runtime
Compare the ImageMagick major version used during Imagick compilation with the libraries found by the running PHP process. A source-built Imagick linked against one installation can fail when the service discovers another installation earlier in its library path. Correct the linker path, remove conflicting libraries or rebuild Imagick against the runtime version. Do not solve an ABI mismatch by copying random .so files between hosts.
CLI PHP works but the website fails
The CLI and web server can load different php.ini files, extension directories or PHP versions. Use the web server’s PHP-FPM pool configuration, inspect its logs and run the minimal new Imagick() test through that SAPI. Restart the correct service after editing its configuration. A successful php -m in a shell is not proof that the web worker loaded the module.
ImageMagick refuses PDF, PS or another format
Inspect the active policy with magick -list policy. Distribution packages and the AppImage may intentionally disable risky coders or delegates. Review the security consequences, isolate untrusted processing and allow only the formats and delegates required by the application. Do not broadly disable policy restrictions on an Internet-facing service.
More than one magick or PHP installation exists
Use absolute paths while diagnosing, inspect PATH, and compare command -v results with service configuration. Package-manager upgrades can leave a source-built binary in /usr/local while a service uses /usr/bin. Make the intended version explicit in deployment configuration, then repeat both the CLI and web-SAPI checks.

Image processing is often exposed to attacker-controlled uploads. Keep ImageMagick and Imagick patched through the package manager or a documented rebuild process. Run conversion workers with the least filesystem and network privilege they need, limit input size and processing time, and store temporary files outside sensitive directories.
ImageMagick’s policy controls which coders, delegates, paths and resources are available. Review it before accepting formats that invoke external programs or parse complex documents. PDF and PostScript support, for example, may involve delegates that administrators intentionally disable. A format working in a developer shell but blocked in production can reflect a deliberate policy boundary.
When compiling, preserve the exact ImageMagick prefix and version used to build Imagick. Rebuild the extension whenever the ImageMagick major version or PHP ABI changes. Test upgrades in a staging environment, including the web SAPI and every image format your application actually handles.
Which method should you use?

The reliable finish line is not a single green command. ImageMagick must answer magick identify -version, the active PHP runtime must answer php --ri imagick, and the PHP SAPI serving the application must successfully instantiate Imagick under the policy you intend to operate.
