Confirm that you have the right Skyblock pack
“Skyblock 3” is ambiguous. This guide covers Modern Skyblock 3: Departed, a Forge modpack for Minecraft 1.12.2. It is not a Paper or Spigot skyblock plugin, a client-only SkyBlock enhancement pack, or a Fabric or NeoForge project. Installing the wrong project produces a server that cannot load the expected mods or a client that cannot connect.

Recommended release
CurseForge lists Modern Skyblock-3.6.0, dated February 25, 2019, as the latest release shown in the available listing. Use the matching server download when starting a new world. Do not combine a 3.6.0 client with an older server archive.

Older release
A 3.0.0.5 server ZIP for Minecraft 1.12.2 is also available. The archive is 311 MB and was uploaded January 31, 2018. Use it only when an existing world or player group was created on that release and you have a reason to stay there. Mixing files from 3.0.0.5 and 3.6.0 can create missing-mod, registry, or world-loading errors.
What the server download should contain
A proper server package normally includes the Forge server components, a mods directory, configuration files, and launch scripts or JARs. If you downloaded only a client profile, stop and obtain the pack’s server files instead; copying a client’s files by hand is not a reliable substitute.

|---|---|---|
| Game and mod-loader version | Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge | This is the version identified for Modern Skyblock 3: Departed. |
| Pack release | 3.6.0 for a new installation | CurseForge’s listing shows it as the newest listed release, dated February 25, 2019; check the Files page for any later correction. |
| Small private server | Start with 4–5 GB allocated to Java | StickyPiston describes 4 GB as its minimum tested starting point and 5 GB as preferable when hosting friends or a public server. BisectHosting recommends 4 GB for smooth operation. |
| Public or larger group | Plan for 6–8 GB allocated to Java | The CurseForge page says at least 6–8 GB; ScaleCube recommends 8 GB minimum. Treat these as published guidance, not a guaranteed performance measurement. |
| Lower-bound estimate | 3 GB may start the server | Minecraft-Hosting.pro lists 3 GB minimum and notes that the actual requirement depends on player and entity counts. Expect less headroom at this allocation. |
| Java | Use the version specified by the pack’s own notes or your host | No retrieved pack documentation confirms a Java version. Java 8 is common with many 1.12.2 Forge installations, but it is not verified here as Modern Skyblock 3’s official requirement. |
| Storage | Dedicated space for the archive, libraries, world, logs, and backups | The older 3.0.0.5 server ZIP alone is 311 MB; the running installation and world require additional space. |
RAM is an allocation, not the total physical memory in the machine. Leave enough memory for the operating system, Java overhead, file caching, and any other services. Giving Java every available gigabyte can make the host less stable rather than improving the server.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Both approaches run the same Forge files. The difference is who maintains the operating system, Java installation, network access, backups, and control panel.

| Decision point | Self-hosted machine | Managed game host |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | You install Java and Forge, extract files, create launch scripts, configure the firewall, and keep the machine online. | A control panel generally offers a modpack installer; select Modern Skyblock 3: Departed and the matching release. |
| Control | Full control over Java, Forge files, JVM flags, operating-system tools, backups, and custom changes. | Convenient controls, but some hosts restrict Java versions, startup flags, file access, or mod changes. |
| Availability | The server is online only while your computer or rented virtual machine is running and reachable. | The provider supplies a persistent machine and network connection, subject to its plan and maintenance windows. |
| Scaling | You must provision more CPU, memory, storage, or bandwidth yourself. | You can usually move to a larger RAM tier from the panel; confirm that the desired tier is available for this older 1.12.2 pack. |
| Best fit | Owners who want maximum control and are comfortable administering a machine. | Groups that prefer a guided install and do not want to manage operating-system updates or port forwarding. |
Several managed hosts advertise one-click Modern Skyblock 3: Departed installations. One published listing specifically identifies pack version 3.6.0. Even with one-click deployment, verify the installed Minecraft, Forge, and pack versions in the panel before inviting players.
Install a self-hosted server
1. Select and download the matching server archive
- Open the Modern Skyblock 3: Departed Files page on CurseForge.
- Select the release your group will use. Choose 3.6.0 for a new world unless you intentionally need 3.0.0.5 for compatibility with an existing world.
- Download the server package, not only the client profile.
- Create a new directory dedicated to this server. Avoid placing it in a general Downloads folder where it can be accidentally moved or deleted.
- Extract the archive into that directory and preserve its folder structure, including
mods, config, libraries, and any supplied scripts.
2. Install the required Java runtime
Read the pack’s current description, server notes, and your host’s instructions for the required Java major version. The available documentation does not verify one for this pack, so do not treat an assumption about Java 8 as an official requirement. On a machine with multiple Java installations, check which executable the launch script actually calls.
Run a version check before starting Forge:
java -version
If the command reports an unsupported version or the wrong architecture, install the version specified by the pack documentation and update the script or system path so the server uses it.
3. Create the Forge server files
Some server archives already contain a usable forge.jar. CurseForge’s installation guidance says to run the Forge JAR supplied with the server files. If your archive instead contains a Forge installer, run it from the server directory with the server-install option:
Rank #3
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that is unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world full of surprises.
- SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.
- COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.
java -jar forge-installer.jar --installServer
The installer filename varies by Forge build; use the actual installer name in your archive. When the process finishes, you should see Forge libraries and a server JAR in the same directory. Keep the generated files together; moving only the JAR can produce missing-library errors.
4. Set the Java memory limits
Use a launch script rather than typing a different command every time. The following examples show the format; adjust the values to the allocation selected in the requirements table and to the memory available on the machine.

On Linux or macOS, create start.sh:
#!/bin/sh
java -Xms4G -Xmx5G -jar forge.jar nogui
Make it executable with chmod +x start.sh, then run ./start.sh. On Windows, create start.bat:
java -Xms4G -Xmx5G -jar forge.jar nogui
pause
If the server files use a generated Forge filename instead of forge.jar, replace that filename with the one actually present. -Xms sets the initial heap and -Xmx sets the maximum; they do not add physical RAM to the computer.

- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10

5. Perform the first launch and accept the EULA
- Run the script once from the server directory.
- Allow Forge to create its libraries, logs, and initial configuration files.
- When startup stops and an EULA notice is displayed, open
eula.txt. - Read the Minecraft EULA. If you agree, change the setting to
eula=trueand save the file. - Start the script again and wait for the console to report that the server is ready. The first launch can take longer while registries and world data are created.
Do not close the console by killing the process during normal operation. Use the server’s stop command so the world and region files are flushed safely.

- Confirm that the server log identifies Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge.
- Check that the expected
modsandconfigdirectories were loaded from the extracted server package. - Look for a clean “server is ready” message rather than a stack trace or repeated restart loop.
- Join locally first, create a test world, and perform a short restart to ensure the world saves and reloads.
Configure access for players
Use an identical client installation
Every player should install Modern Skyblock 3: Departed for Minecraft 1.12.2 and select the same release as the server. A client on 3.6.0 should not connect to a 3.0.0.5 server, and a manually modified mods or config folder can cause a mismatch even when the visible pack name is identical.
LAN versus internet play
For a local network, give players the host computer’s private address and ensure the operating-system firewall permits Java. For internet play, the machine must be reachable from outside the network; configure the router and firewall according to your network provider’s instructions, or use a managed host that supplies a public address. Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, because a local test can succeed even when outside connections are blocked.
Whitelist and permissions
Enable a whitelist before sharing a public address. Add trusted player names from the server console, keep operator privileges limited, and never publish the console or remote-administration credentials. Give the address only to the people who need it.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Operating the server safely
Back up the right files
Stop the server before making a full backup, then copy the world directory, mods, config, launch scripts, and server settings. Keep at least one backup away from the machine running the server. Test a restore on a separate directory; a backup that has never been restored is not a proven recovery plan.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Watch logs and resource use
Review logs/latest.log after startup and whenever a player reports a crash. Record the pack release, Java version, memory flags, and the time of the incident. Monitor CPU, allocated heap, disk space, and network use. A high memory allocation cannot compensate for a saturated CPU, a full disk, excessive entities, or a poor network path.
Keep changes deliberate
Do not add random performance mods or replace individual libraries while troubleshooting. First reproduce the issue with the unmodified server package. If you later add a server-side change, document the file, reason, and date so it can be removed or restored from backup.
Troubleshooting common failures
The process exits immediately
- Read the final lines of the console and
logs/latest.loginstead of repeatedly restarting. - Verify that the launch script points to the Forge JAR created by the installer and that the working directory is the server directory.
- Run
java -versionand compare it with the pack’s documented requirement. - Check that the Forge libraries were downloaded and that the server has permission to read its files.
“Out of memory” errors or severe pauses
- Compare the
-Xmxvalue with the machine’s physical memory and the allocation guidance for your player count. - Leave operating-system headroom rather than assigning all memory to Java.
- Reduce simultaneous players or entity-heavy activity while diagnosing the problem.
- Inspect the log for a specific mod or world area generating excessive entities before assuming that adding RAM will solve it.
Players receive a mod or registry mismatch
- Confirm that the server and client use the same Modern Skyblock 3 release and Minecraft 1.12.2.
- Replace altered
modsandconfigdirectories with clean copies from the matching server or client package. - Do not copy files from 3.0.0.5 into a 3.6.0 installation, or vice versa.
The server asks for the EULA every time
Make sure eula.txt is saved in the same directory from which the script runs and that the account launching Java can write to it. Set eula=true only after reading and accepting the EULA; do not create multiple server directories and edit the wrong file.
Players cannot connect from outside the house
- Confirm that the server console is running and listening on the intended address.
- Check the host firewall and router forwarding rules.
- Test with the public address from another network.
- If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound connections, use a managed host or another network arrangement instead of repeatedly changing the modpack.
Updating, downgrading, or moving the world
- Announce maintenance and stop the server cleanly.
- Make a complete backup of the world and configuration.
- Record the current pack release, Forge files, Java version, and launch flags.
- Install the target server package in a separate directory rather than overwriting the working installation.
- Start it once with a copy of the world. Watch the log for missing mappings, mod errors, or conversion warnings.
- Only after the test succeeds should you schedule the migration for players.
A world created on 3.0.0.5 may not be safely reversible after being opened by 3.6.0. Keep the original backup untouched so you can return to the previous release if the upgrade fails.
Launch checklist
- Pack identity confirmed: Modern Skyblock 3: Departed.
- Minecraft version confirmed: 1.12.2.
- Server archive and client profile use the same release.
- Forge server JAR and libraries were generated in the server directory.
- Java version was checked against the pack’s current notes.
- Memory flags match the group size and leave room for the operating system.
- EULA accepted in the correct directory.
- Local test world created, saved, stopped, and reloaded successfully.
- Firewall, router, whitelist, and backup procedures tested before public launch.
With those checks complete, Modern Skyblock 3 can run reliably as a conventional 1.12.2 Forge server. The most important safeguards are version discipline, a Java runtime confirmed from current pack documentation, and enough memory for the number of players and entities your world actually contains.
