Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Use ansible.builtin.git for source code and community.general.composer for dependencies. The Composer module is a collection module, not part of ansible-core, so install the collection before running the playbook. The example below uses an Ubuntu-style host with www-data, PHP-FPM, Nginx and a Laravel application, but the role boundaries also work for other PHP frameworks.

What the deployment should automate
A deployment is easier to reason about when each operation has one purpose and a predictable order. A typical run performs these actions:
- Prepare a new application directory for the selected release.
- Clone or update the requested Git branch, tag or commit.
- Run Composer in the release directory with development packages excluded and the autoloader optimized.
- Render an environment file and application secrets from Ansible variables or a vault, never from the repository.
- Set ownership and permissions for the web user and the directories that must be writable.
- Render PHP-FPM and Nginx configuration and reload a service only when its configuration changes.
- Run framework-specific tasks such as Laravel migrations.
- Restart or reload queue workers and update scheduled tasks when the release changes.
Keeping these steps separate gives Ansible useful idempotence: a second run can verify the desired state without rebuilding everything unnecessarily.

Prerequisites and boundaries
Control node
- Ansible with a version compatible with the modules and collections you select.
- The
community.generalcollection installed on the control node:
ansible-galaxy collection install community.general
Pin the collection in collections/requirements.yml for repeatable automation, then install it during controller setup. The documentation page consulted for the Composer module described community.general 13.3.0; newer releases can add parameters, while older releases may not support the same options.
Target host
- Git command-line tools version 1.7.1 or later. The Git module invokes the executable on the target host.
- PHP and Composer installed and available to the account that Ansible uses. If Composer is not on
PATH, setcomposer_executableto its full path. - PHP-FPM, Nginx and the appropriate service names for the distribution.
- An SSH account with privilege escalation rights, plus a deployment directory and a web-service account such as
www-dataon Ubuntu. - Network access from the target to the Git server and Composer package repositories, unless those dependencies are mirrored internally.
This playbook deliberately does not install a PHP version or add a third-party package repository. PHP-FPM package names and supported PHP versions vary by distribution; install and test the runtime separately, then set the service and binary variables for your host.

Use fully qualified module names. They make it clear which collection supplies a task and prevent name collisions.
| Purpose | Module | Important details |
|---|---|---|
| Source checkout | ansible.builtin.git |
repo and dest are required for a normal clone. version can be a branch, tag or SHA-1; it defaults to HEAD. |
| PHP dependencies | community.general.composer |
Requires PHP and Composer on the target. Useful options include working_dir, no_dev, prefer_dist and optimize_autoloader. |
| Files and directories | ansible.builtin.file, template, copy |
Use explicit modes and owners; keep secrets at mode 0600 where practical. |
| Service changes | ansible.builtin.systemd or service |
Notify handlers so reloads and restarts happen only after a changed template. |
Older examples often use sudo, with_items and key-value task arguments. Do not copy that syntax into a current playbook. The current Composer module uses composer_executable, not the older executable spelling, and its boolean options should be written as YAML booleans.
Lay out the project as roles
A role boundary prevents application code, web-server configuration and worker management from becoming one unmaintainable task file. A practical layout is:

Store vault_db_password, vault_app_key and private-key paths in encrypted variables. Do not put a username or password in the Git repository URL. The Git module documentation recommends SSH keys or a credential helper instead. Provision the Git server’s host key through a managed known_hosts entry. Avoid accept_hostkey, which disables man-in-the-middle protection; use a verified known-hosts entry or the safer first-connection behavior supported by your installed module version.
Do not print secret-bearing tasks. Use no_log: true for commands whose output could contain credentials, and make sure CI logs do not echo extra variables.

Restart the worker after the current symlink changes so it loads the new code. If workers process jobs that must not be interrupted, use the framework’s graceful-stop option and coordinate a drain before restarting.
For scheduled Laravel commands, install one system cron entry that invokes the scheduler every minute, or use a systemd timer:
* * * * * {{ web_user }} cd {{ current_path }} && {{ php_binary }} artisan schedule:run >/dev/null 2>&1
Do not create one cron entry per scheduled task; keep task definitions in the application and let the scheduler dispatch them.

Database migrations and release order
Run migrations from the new release with the production force flag, as shown in the playbook. Make migrations backward-compatible when old workers may still be running: add new columns before deploying code that reads them, and defer destructive changes until the old code is gone.
The example runs migrations before switching the current symlink. That is appropriate when the migration is compatible with the currently live code. If a migration requires the new code first, use an explicit two-phase deployment and document the dependency rather than hiding it in a task order.
Best Value
Idempotence, handlers and safe reruns
- Use
templateandfiletasks instead of shell commands for configuration and permissions. - Pin
app_revisionto a tag or commit in production. A moving branch makes a rerun non-reproducible. - Use handlers for Nginx and PHP-FPM reloads. A source checkout or Composer install should not restart services by itself.
- Keep release directories separate from the live symlink. Retain a defined number of known-good releases and delete older ones only after verifying the new release.
- Run
ansible-playbook --checkwhere modules support check mode, but still test Composer, migrations and service reloads in a staging environment because check mode cannot prove that application code will boot.
Rollback strategy
Ansible’s Git and Composer modules prepare files; they do not automatically provide an application release manager or database rollback. A simple rollback is to point current at a previously prepared release, reload the relevant services and restart workers. Keep the previous release until health checks pass.
Database rollback needs its own tested procedure. Never assume that reversing a Git revision reverses a production schema safely. For destructive migrations, take the backup and recovery approach required by your database platform and test it before an incident.

Troubleshooting common failures
The Git task cannot clone
- Confirm the target has Git 1.7.1 or newer and that the deployment user can read the private key.
- Verify the repository host key is present in the target user’s known-hosts file.
- Check that
repouses an SSH form and contains no embedded password. - Use
versionwith a valid branch, tag or commit and inspect the task’s verbose output.
Composer is not found or fails on dependencies
- Install PHP and Composer on the target, then set
composer_executableto the actual binary path. - Confirm that
composer.jsonand its lock file are in the checked-out release. - Check memory limits, PHP extensions and repository connectivity.
- Remember that
community.general.composeris not included inansible-core; install the collection on the controller.
Nginx returns 502
- Check that the PHP-FPM service is running and that its socket path matches both templates.
- Verify the pool user can read the release and write required runtime directories.
- Inspect Nginx and PHP-FPM logs, then run the distribution’s Nginx configuration test before another reload.
The application reports a missing key or environment value
- Confirm the rendered
.envexists in the active release and has the expected mode. - Check that the template variables came from the correct inventory group and vault.
- Clear or rebuild framework caches using the framework’s documented command after changing configuration.
Workers still execute old code
Long-running workers keep the code loaded in memory. Restart the worker unit after switching the symlink and verify its WorkingDirectory points to current, not an old timestamped release.
Keeping the automation maintainable
Pin the collection version in your controller build and review its changelog before upgrading. The Composer documentation records that force for create-project was added in 13.0.0 and that Composer’s root-user warning passthrough was added in 13.5.0; a playbook that relies on either option must require a collection version that provides it. The documentation page available for this assignment described 13.3.0, so do not assume the newer option exists there.
Test each role against the same PHP major version, web-server configuration and service names used in production. Add a staging deployment that checks the HTTP health endpoint, a representative CLI command, queue processing and a read-only database request before promoting a release.
Quick Recap
Production checklist
- Code: Git revision is a tag or commit, the repository uses SSH authentication, and host keys are verified.
- Dependencies: PHP, Composer and Git are installed on the target; the required
community.generalversion is pinned. - Configuration: secrets are in Vault or another secret manager, not in Git or command-line logs.
- Permissions: the web user can write only the runtime directories that require it.
- Web stack: Nginx and PHP-FPM templates use the same socket, document root and service variables.
- Framework: migrations, cache handling, queue workers and scheduled tasks have explicit tasks and recovery procedures.
- Operations: releases are kept separately from
current, health checks run after deployment, and a previous release can be restored without rewriting the database.
