If you are playing without mods, the closest equivalent is archaeology: find naturally generated suspicious sand or suspicious gravel, then use a Brush to uncover structure-specific loot. Actual fossils are added by mods such as Cobblemon and Better Archeology, each with its own dig-site rules.

Are fossils available in vanilla Minecraft?
No. The vanilla game does not generate a fossil block or a collectible item called a fossil. Minecraft’s archaeology system is the intended fossil-hunting substitute. You investigate suspicious blocks, brush them in place, and receive loot before the block becomes ordinary sand or gravel.
That distinction matters when searching for “Minecraft fossils.” A desert, ocean ruin, or trail ruin can contain archaeology, but finding one will not produce a dinosaur fossil in an unmodded world. Fossil items require a mod that adds them.

Where suspicious sand and suspicious gravel generate
Vanilla archaeology is tied to particular structures. The block type depends on the structure and, for ocean ruins, the temperature category of the ocean.
| Structure | Suspicious block | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Warm ocean ruins | Suspicious sand | Search the ruin’s sand-covered sections. |
| Desert pyramids | Suspicious sand | The buried room contains six to eight suspicious sand blocks. |
| Desert wells | Suspicious sand | Small desert structures can hide archaeology beneath or around their sand. |
| Cold ocean ruins | Suspicious gravel | Suspicious gravel was added with the 1.20 archaeology content. |
| Trail ruins | Suspicious gravel | Trail ruins are a major pottery-shard source and contain many archaeological blocks. |
Some online guides describe trail ruins as generating suspicious sand. The Minecraft Wiki’s structure information identifies suspicious gravel for trail ruins, so treat claims of trail-ruin sand as a guide discrepancy rather than a reliable search rule.

Desert pyramids are the most predictable early target because their buried room has a stated quantity: six to eight suspicious sand blocks. Approach the room carefully, expose the blocks without breaking them, and brush each one where it stands.
Desert wells
Desert wells also generate suspicious sand. Their loot pool is different from a pyramid’s, so finding a well is worthwhile even after you have already searched a pyramid.
Ocean ruins
Warm ocean ruins use suspicious sand, while cold ocean ruins use suspicious gravel. The distinction is important when you are underwater: searching the wrong ruin category will not produce the block type you expected.
Trail ruins
Trail ruins use suspicious gravel and are especially valuable for pottery sherds. They are also one of the places where archaeology can contribute to collecting the game’s pottery patterns.

What vanilla archaeology can give you
Loot is structure-dependent. Brushing the same block type in two different structures does not guarantee the same rewards.
| Location | Documented possible loot |
|---|---|
| Desert pyramid suspicious sand | Pottery sherds, TNT, gunpowder, emeralds and diamonds. |
| Desert well suspicious sand | Pottery sherds, bricks, emeralds, sticks and suspicious stew. |
| Trail ruin suspicious gravel | Pottery sherds, including access to the trail-ruin set of 20 patterns. |
Archaeology is also the initial source for sniffer eggs and four smithing templates. “Initial source” means these items enter a new progression through archaeology; later copies or uses may follow the normal game mechanics for those items.
Loot tables can change with Minecraft updates. The lists above reflect the documented structure pools, not a promise that every current or future edition uses identical probabilities. Java and Bedrock releases can also differ when Mojang changes generation or loot.
How to use a Brush without destroying the block
Suspicious blocks are fragile. Mining one with a pickaxe or shovel destroys it and drops nothing. A player-placed suspicious block also yields nothing when brushed; only naturally generated suspicious blocks contain archaeology loot.

- Leave the block in place. Do not use a pickaxe, shovel or other breaking action on suspicious sand or gravel.
- Equip a Brush. The Minecraft Wiki’s crafting instructions describe a vertical recipe of one feather, one copper ingot and one stick.
- Use the Brush on the suspicious block. Keep the use action held until the brushing animation completes.
- Collect the item that appears. After successful brushing, the suspicious block turns into normal sand or gravel.
The documented brushing duration is 96 game ticks, about 4.8 seconds, per block, and each completed brushing uses one point of Brush durability. A separate guide reports about one second, but that figure conflicts with the 96-tick value; the wiki’s 96-tick figure is the safer planning assumption.
The Brush recipe has conflicting documentation
The Brush article’s crafting section gives the feather, copper-ingot and stick recipe, while another statement on the same wiki says Brushes cannot be crafted and are obtained by brushing suspicious blocks or in trial chambers. Those statements cannot both describe every current version. If the recipe works in your installed edition, craft it normally. If it does not, check the recipe book and your game version, then follow the acquisition method documented for that version, including trial-chamber availability where applicable.

A safe vanilla archaeology expedition
1. Choose a structure before you start searching
Decide what you want. Desert pyramids and wells provide suspicious sand and their own loot pools; warm ocean ruins provide suspicious sand underwater; cold ocean ruins and trail ruins provide suspicious gravel. If you are targeting pottery sherds, trail ruins deserve particular attention because they are a major source.

2. Bring a working Brush
Because a suspicious block takes about 4.8 seconds to brush and costs one durability, check that your Brush can finish the blocks you find. Carrying the ingredients for a replacement is sensible when your edition supports the documented recipe.
3. Identify suspicious texture before touching it
Suspicious sand and suspicious gravel look different from their ordinary counterparts. Once you find one inside the relevant structure, stop mining around it with a shovel or pickaxe. Clear adjacent ordinary blocks carefully so the suspicious block remains intact.
4. Brush every natural suspicious block
Hold the use action on each block until the brushing completes. A naturally generated block produces its structure’s loot; a block placed by a player will not. If nothing appears, verify that the block was generated with the structure and was not placed during construction.
5. Leave after the block converts
After brushing, the block becomes normal sand or gravel. That conversion is the expected result, not a failure. The item has already been released, so there is no second fossil-like layer to mine underneath it.

How fossils work in Cobblemon
Cobblemon adds actual fossils, but they are not part of vanilla Minecraft. Third-party Cobblemon guides describe fossils at prehistoric dig sites in deserts, jungles and on the ocean floor.
- Locate a Cobblemon prehistoric dig site in one of those environments.
- Find the site’s suspicious sand or suspicious gravel.
- Use a Brush on the suspicious block instead of breaking it.
- Collect the fossil revealed by the completed brushing.
Breaking a Cobblemon suspicious block with a pickaxe or shovel destroys the fossil. Cobblemon fossils have no crafting recipe, so brushing a dig-site block is the acquisition route described by those guides.
Guides also disagree about whether most sites favor gravel and whether the desert Sandy Den specifically uses sand. That site-by-site split has not been confirmed against the mod’s own documentation, so use the block present in your installed mod and avoid treating a guide’s biome table as universal. Cobblemon’s exact generation and fossil list can change with the mod version.
How fossils work in Better Archeology
Better Archeology expands the set of blocks that can hide fossil rewards. Its guides describe brushing all of the following:
- Fossiliferous dirt
- Suspicious sand
- Suspicious dirt
- Suspicious red sand
In this mod, a complete fossil can grant effects when it is placed in your base. The particular effects and the conditions for receiving them depend on the mod version; the available documentation establishes the base-placement effect but does not provide a complete effect table.
Because Better Archeology is modded content, a block that looks archaeological in a modded world may follow the mod’s rules rather than vanilla’s structure-only rules. Read the installed mod’s in-game descriptions or documentation when generation does not match a guide.

Vanilla archaeology versus modded fossils
| Question | Vanilla archaeology | Modded fossils |
|---|---|---|
| Are fossil blocks present? | No; suspicious blocks provide archaeology loot. | Yes, when a fossil-adding mod is installed. |
| Where do rewards generate? | Specific structures: ocean ruins, desert pyramids, desert wells and trail ruins. | Mod-defined dig sites or fossil-bearing blocks. |
| How are rewards obtained? | Brush naturally generated suspicious sand or gravel. | Brush the mod’s fossil-bearing suspicious block or dirt. |
| Can the reward be crafted? | Archaeology rewards come from loot tables, not fossil crafting. | Cobblemon fossils have no crafting recipe. |
| What destroys the reward? | Mining a suspicious block with a pickaxe or shovel; brushing a player-placed block yields nothing. | In Cobblemon, mining the suspicious block destroys the fossil; each mod can define its own failure behavior. |
| What controls compatibility? | Your Minecraft edition and version. | Your Minecraft version plus the installed mod and its version. |
Common problems and fixes
“I searched caves and found no fossils.”
That is expected in an unmodded world. Vanilla has no fossil block. Search the listed archaeology structures instead, or install a fossil-adding mod such as Cobblemon or Better Archeology.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“The suspicious block broke and dropped nothing.”
A pickaxe or shovel destroys suspicious sand and gravel. Reloading the area will not restore the loot. In future, expose the block by removing surrounding ordinary blocks and brush it directly.
“My Brush produced nothing.”
Check whether the block was naturally generated. Player-placed suspicious blocks do not contain loot. Also confirm that you are using the Brush on a supported structure or, in a modded world, on a block supported by that mod.
“I found suspicious sand in a trail ruin guide, but my ruin has gravel.”
The documented vanilla generation for trail ruins is suspicious gravel. Guides that list sand are inconsistent with that information. Continue by brushing the gravel in your world rather than replacing it or searching for sand.
“The Brush recipe does not work.”
Brush documentation is internally inconsistent. Verify the exact Minecraft edition and version, look in the in-game recipe book, and consult the version-specific acquisition instructions. Do not assume that a recipe from an older guide applies to your installation.

“A Cobblemon dig site gave me no fossil.”
Make sure you are at a prehistoric dig site and that you brushed the suspicious block instead of mining it. Generation details can differ between Cobblemon releases, and the commonly repeated sand-versus-gravel site breakdown has not been verified against the mod’s own documentation.
Version notes you should check before searching
- Suspicious gravel, including the cold-ocean-ruin archaeology associated with it, was added in Minecraft 1.20.
- Structure generation and loot tables can change in later Minecraft updates.
- Brush availability is affected by the conflicting documentation described above, so use the recipe book and version-specific information in your installation.
- Modded fossil locations and rewards depend on the exact Cobblemon or Better Archeology release.
Quick checklist
- Playing vanilla? Search for archaeology, not fossil blocks.
- Desert pyramid: inspect the buried room’s six to eight suspicious sand blocks.
- Desert well or warm ocean ruin: look for suspicious sand.
- Cold ocean ruin or trail ruin: look for suspicious gravel.
- Never mine a suspicious block with a pickaxe or shovel.
- Brush only naturally generated blocks; placed blocks give nothing.
- Allow about 96 game ticks, or 4.8 seconds, for each completed brush action.
- Using Cobblemon? Brush suspicious sand or gravel at prehistoric dig sites.
- Using Better Archeology? Check fossiliferous dirt, suspicious dirt, suspicious sand and suspicious red sand.
The practical answer
If your goal is a fossil in ordinary Minecraft, there is nowhere to mine one because vanilla does not include fossils. Your actionable target is a naturally generated suspicious block in the correct structure: brush sand in desert pyramids, desert wells and warm ocean ruins, or gravel in cold ocean ruins and trail ruins. Install a fossil mod only when you want actual fossil items, then follow that mod’s dig-site rules and version documentation.
