How to Install Fedora Everything with a Custom Desktop Environment

Use Fedora Everything’s online installer to select packages for a custom Fedora desktop. Choose the matching architecture, verify the ISO, and check release-specific group names.

Fedora Everything lets you choose packages during installation, so you can build a Fedora system around a desktop environment you prefer instead of starting with a standard desktop image. It is an online installer: use a working internet connection or a local Fedora repository mirror, and choose the installer image that matches your computer’s architecture.

What Fedora Everything does—and what you need

Fedora’s download page describes Everything as an online installer that allows package selection during setup. It is not a complete offline collection of Fedora software; installation requires internet access or a local mirror of Fedora’s software repository. The page lists Fedora Everything 44 Network Install ISOs for x86_64, aarch64, ppc64le, and s390x. See Fedora’s Everything download page for the current release and available images.

  • A computer compatible with one of the architectures offered for the release you plan to install.
  • Reliable internet access during installation, or access to a local Fedora repository mirror.
  • A USB flash drive or other suitable installation media, if you are booting the installer from removable media.

Download and verify the matching installer

  1. Open the Fedora Everything download page. Select the Network Install ISO for your machine’s architecture. Fedora 44 is listed for x86_64, aarch64, ppc64le, and s390x; do not assume an image for one architecture will work on another.
  2. Download the checksum file and Fedora OpenPGP certificates identified on the download page. Verify the ISO using Fedora’s signed-checksum instructions before writing it to installation media or booting it. The page provides examples using sq verify and gpgv; follow the commands and certificate links there rather than substituting an unverified checksum.
  3. Write the verified ISO to your chosen installation media using a suitable imaging utility, then boot the target computer from that media. The exact boot-menu key and media-writing steps depend on the computer and utility.

Choose a desktop during installation

In the installer, use the software-selection controls to choose the desktop environment or package set you want, if it is offered for the Fedora release you downloaded. Fedora’s documentation confirms that Everything supports package selection during installation, but the exact Fedora 44 screen label and desktop list were not established in the available official documentation. Follow the labels shown by your installer instead of relying on screenshots or click paths from a different Fedora release.

Before confirming the selection, check that it represents the desktop and application set you intend to install. The names of an environment group and a desktop package group are not necessarily interchangeable. Fedora’s Comps documentation explains how environment and package groups are organized, but the available groups can vary by release.

How to choose the right desktop package set

There is no universally best custom environment. Decide based on how you want to work and what you want installed, not on unsupported claims about which option is fastest or smallest. Fedora’s available sources do not establish comparative Fedora 44 resource measurements or a complete list of desktop choices.

  • Interface and workflow: Choose an environment whose layout and interaction style suit how you use the computer.
  • Included software: Consider whether you want an integrated set of desktop applications or prefer to add applications individually.
  • Hardware: Match the installation to the machine you have. No current comparative measurements are available here to identify an objectively lightest option.
  • Assembly versus convenience: A desktop environment or package set can provide a more integrated starting point; a minimal base gives you more control but requires you to assemble the graphical experience yourself.

Fedora’s Fedora 43 Final Release Criteria identify GNOME and KDE as release-blocking desktops for that release. That is a Fedora 43 quality-assurance designation, not a complete list of Fedora 44 options or proof that the Fedora 44 installer shows the same choices. See the Fedora 43 Final Release Criteria.

Install a desktop later from a minimal system

If you install a minimal base instead, Fedora documents using DNF to query and install groups. First inspect the groups available from your enabled repositories, then install the appropriate group using the exact name shown for your release. For example, the documented workflow is to query groups with dnf group list and install a chosen group with dnf group install <group-name>. Replace <group-name> with the actual group identifier shown on your system; do not assume that a display label, environment group, and package group have identical names. Consult Fedora’s Comps documentation for the group model and DNF group operations.

Check the installed session

After installation, confirm that the intended graphical session is installed and available from the login screen’s session chooser, if one is presented. If it is missing, return to DNF’s group listing for the installed release and check that you installed the correct group rather than relying on a remembered group name. The installer and group choices are release-dependent, so verify them against the Fedora version actually installed.
