If your robot vacuum skips rooms or keeps cleaning the same patch, start by checking whether it can reach the room, then inspect its sensors, map, starting position and route settings. The right fix depends on the model: a closed door is different from a saved-map problem, and a sensor error does not automatically mean a part needs replacing.
First, identify the pattern
Before changing settings, note where and when the problem happens. Does one room never appear on the map, does the robot miss wall edges, or does it repeat a route throughout the home? Did it start after moving the dock, changing the room layout or picking up the robot? Check the app map, active route mode and any error message. These clues help distinguish a physical access problem from mapping, localization or cleaning-mode behavior.

Check that the robot can reach the room
Open the door and clear objects from the doorway and route into the room. Check whether the robot can cross the threshold. In the app, look for a no-go zone, virtual wall or keep-out area that might block entry. Roborock lists access obstacles among the first things to check when a robot misses areas (Roborock’s missed-area guidance).

Clean navigation sensors according to the model
Dust or obstruction on a navigation sensor can affect a robot’s path. Use the cleaning method in your model’s manual; sensor placement and instructions differ, and cleaner should not be sprayed into openings.

Its dual rotating electric side brushes sweep and collect hidden pet hair more efficiently throughout the house, saving you the hassle.
- Roborock: Its missed-area guidance recommends wiping the right-side wall sensor with a damp cloth, then running another cleanup. The S7 MaxV and Q7 manuals also list blocked LiDAR and dirty wall sensor errors with model-specific checks (missed-area guidance; S7 MaxV manual; Q7 manual).
- iRobot i Series: iRobot’s navigation guidance specifies a lightly dampened soft cloth for the top camera window and a clean, dry cloth for the floor-tracking sensor. Follow this only for the applicable iRobot model and check its manual before using it on another robot (iRobot i Series Navigation Overview).
A soft microfiber cloth is suitable for basic, manufacturer-directed wiping, but it cannot repair a faulty component. If cleaning does not resolve a persistent model-specific error, follow the manual’s remaining checks and contact the manufacturer’s support service.
Check the saved map and mapping run
If a room is absent from the app map or room-specific cleaning cannot reach it, check how the map was created. For its first map, Roborock advises enabling map saving, starting the robot at its dock, opening doors to rooms that should be mapped, and letting it finish and return to the dock without moving the dock (Roborock missed-area guidance; Roborock home-preparation guidance).

For iRobot i3, i4 and i5 models using Smart Maps, the mapping-only run should start and end on the Home Base or Clean Base and finish without an error or user assistance. iRobot says to delete and recreate the Smart Map if the dock has moved or the home layout has changed substantially. These instructions apply to those models and their Smart Map feature, not to every robot vacuum (iRobot Smart Maps for i3/i4/i5 Roombas).
Keep the dock and starting point consistent
A robot may have trouble localizing itself or finding its dock if it starts away from the dock, is moved manually during a run or encounters an obstacle. Roborock recommends cleaning the dock’s front signal-transmission area and the robot’s front sensor. For the setup described in its dock guidance, leave at least 0.5 m clear on each side of the dock and 1.5 m in front; check your own model’s instructions before applying those clearances (Roborock dock-finding guidance).

For directed room cleaning on iRobot i3/i4/i5 models, iRobot says to start the job from the charging station, which serves as a localization point. If the robot is moved during a directed room job, return it to the dock before continuing that job (iRobot Smart Maps for i3/i4/i5 Roombas).
Check whether the route mode explains missed edges
On the Roborock S7 Max Ultra, S8, S8+, S8 Pro Ultra and Q Revo, the Fast route is designed for quicker daily cleaning and may skip room boundaries or some spots. If one of these models is missing edges and Fast route is active, try a different route setting if available. This explanation applies to those listed models and that setting; it does not establish why other robots repeat areas or miss rooms (Roborock Fast route guidance).
Use error messages before considering repairs
Check the error code in the app or manual and follow the steps for your exact model. The Roborock S7 MaxV and Q7 manuals describe faults including blocked LiDAR, a dirty wall sensor, dock locator errors and failure to return to the dock. Their troubleshooting steps support inspection and cleaning; they do not establish that a replacement sensor is needed for your robot. If an error remains after the listed checks, contact the manufacturer’s support service rather than buying a part based on the symptom alone (S7 MaxV manual; Q7 manual).
